My game has been lagging really badly ever since I tried to start a new game after beating my first. I cant even go into a character creation without it being ridiculously laggy. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling twice, Im getting really frustrated now especially since I bought Dragon Age Awakening and STILL havent been able to get past creating my character. Anyone know what to do??

Failed: Including adequate information in a problem report, DA O:

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/436011/1#2352507

Once that is taken care of, as a matter of interest, since it is a stand-alone game, without any multi-player element, there is no "LAG", as that term is used for computers (and as reflected by an MMO whose servers are overloaded).

There can be slowdowns, which meet the non-computer usage of the word "Lag", so it's really a matter of how nerdy you are, whether it's a big deal or not between using the correct term or not.  Your system is running slowly, but since you decided to treat this place as if it was a console system forum, you cannot get a useful answer yet.

Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
Processor Name / Type: Athlon 64 / Pentium / C2D / dual core / quad, etc.
Processor Speed:  ?.? Ghz (or AMD Performance Number)
Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP #?, Win7, Vista ? (Oh, no!)
System RAM: ? ? GBs (MBs, if less than 1024 ? )
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: ATI / Nvidia (only those two are supported, PERIOD, so answer which of them you have)
Video Card Model: (examples) Radeon HD 5670 / Geforce GT 240
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst ?.? / Nforce ??.??
. . (use the numbers, not the word "latest")
Video Card onboard RAM: ? ? ? MBs
Sound Card Manufacturer:
Sound Card Model:

(And this is only for the raw hardware variations.  Potential software conflicts are far more likely to be game play problems, and developers cannot test for all possible program loads.)

If you changed hardware between games, or whatever is different, is the main point, of course.

Ignore him, he's got a stick up his ass about something. What he meant to say is what are your system specifications so we can tell you what's causing the slowdowns and if you're running on the appropriate graphics settings.

Furthermore, patch 1.03 is known to cause slowdowns in certain areas and is resolved by reloading.

Gorath Alpha was pointing out the fact that "lag" should be used to refer to high levels of latency, which can occur when you have connection problems in an online game, resulting in delays, characters "rubber banding", etc. What you speak of sounds much more like slowdown, due to your framerate dropping.

You'll need to give us your system specifications, either from a utility like System Information, DirectX Diagnostic, or Dragon Age's own config tool (unless you know them off-hand), since what you're describing sounds like the sort of problem you'd run into if your computer was below the recommended specifications for the game.

Also, no offense, but you don't seem particularly broken up about uninstalling/not playing that game you apparently just spent a bunch of money on.  I don't want to make accusations, but most people here aren't interested in helping those who acquired the game through illegal means.

Im running Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200 @2.33GHz
6.00 GB
64-Bit Operating System
NIVIDA GeForce 9500 GS
I did buy both games LEGALLY I was just saying I uninstalled and reinstalled out of desperation to hopefully stop the lagging. Now It doesnt just happen randomly for me, it starts the second I attempt to create a character or play ANY saved game. I once again uninstalled both games and tried just putting DA:O In but even that game lags up after a minute.I tried everything someone with limited computer knowledge would try (restarting my computer, reinstalling the game, exiting and restarting the game) but Im still stuck with a laggy game. Its especially aggrivating because this only happened like 2 or 3 days ago and Ive been playing to the game for months without a single problem, not even a tiny bit of lag in massive fights.

You should ensure you have adequate hard drive free space, and defrag. Try ensuring your video card driver is up-to-date.

I have seen this behavior just before a hard drive crash - lets hope that isnt your case! Any other games, especially videos, acting wierd?

Nope its just Dragon Age thats going funny,I start it up for a few seconds its fine then it just slows right down to a crawl, I havent done ANYTHING to my system that Im aware of, it just started after I beat my game and decided I wanted to try out a Blood Mage, I was doing fine and then I started to get all laggy and its been like that since.

Can you check if your system is doing a scheduled defragmentation? I noticed this on two occassions myself.

That happened to me too! I created a topic here a while ago, and a very nice guy was helping me, but I went into a 2 week trip and lost my topic...

Anyway, in my case, there was no program runnig behind, and the game suddenly decided to work in slow motion. After 65 hours of gameplay just fine.

Even if no one here installed anything nie, is there a known windows upgrade that messes with the game?

I won't post my specs again if it's not necessary, but they're fine, above recommended, at least for the minimum quality.

Thanks!

I have a similar issue...except that it's happened since I've installed this game. The slow down is ridiculous and the only fix is to constantly restart the game. After about 5-10 minutes of playing, it becomes unplayable until I restart the game. I mean 1-2 FPS, sometimes ZERO.

Processor: AMD Phenom™ 9500 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 4094MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO 756MB

The only problem with this computer really is Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit. I'll be getting Windows 7 soon...but I seriously doubt that Windows Vista is the issue here. I've ruled out memory leaks, I've updated all drivers, even tried old ones. I am running the 1.03 patch, and if that's the cause then that sucks because I really don't want to reinstall the game.

I ran a defrag and tried playing and once again full of lag, I uninstalled and ran a defrag then and still laggy. I lowered everything on the video settings for the game and its working relativly ok but I refuse to accept the game at its current state, I didnt go from running on the highest settings possible for this game for god knows how long without problem to the minimum of settings with a slight lag problem, its unacceptable.

On the Video settings, turn off anti-aliasing altogether. Turn back up the Graphics and Textures settings such that you can play the game and not have any lag. Also, uncheck all the Online options.

Tried it and to no avail, guess Im screwed for now which is a huge let down, I never even got to TRY Awakening which is both unfortunate and angering. I cant believe that I went from running this game with the hightest settings it had to barely being able to run it on its lowest settings in a matter of minutes seemingly without any cause, very upsetting.

Did you install patch 1.03??

The only instance where you should have patch 1.03 is if it was installed automatically when Awakening was installed as it comes bundled with patch 1.03. DO NOT INSTALL patch 1.03 onto Origins alone.

I just uninstalled and reinstalled to make 100% sure I do not have version 1.03. I have lowered my graphics to low, turned off anti-aliasing, unchecked all the online options and Im still running a laggy game. Now that I know this isnt the work of the horrible Bioware fail that is patch 1.03 Im at a loss as to what has happened to my game. I went from 100% to zero without cause (that I can see).

Yeah . . . that's very perplexing . . . usually, it's patch 1.03 that's pooching the memory. Of course, I assume you're not running any other programs on your computer at the same time. And that you've done a hard re-boot of your computer or even shut it down completely, wait 20 seconds then re-start it.

I guess you don't have the liberty of installing DA onto a second computer?

Try updating your video drivers - grasping at straws now. You have enough hardware; that's why I think it's a software problem.

I seem to recall someone also mentioned something about installing the DX9 runtimes in one of the other forum posts. Apparently, DA was written with DX9 and some of the newer versions of DX cause slowdown for some unknown reason.

Try this:  http://social.biowar...58/index/389602

the different versions of directx runtime can exist together - dont worry about your directx 10 (comes with vista) and installing directx 9c (which DAO uses):

I think reverting back to the retail version may have fixed my issue.

Well, I DO have another pc to install and try it, but it's a laptop, and I'm not sure it's good enough to run DA ( I don't know anything about laptops)
Here: Intel Core 2 Duo P8700
         4Gb RAM
         GeForce G105M
         Win 7 64bits
So, it's worth the try, or the game will undoubtely be laggy, only because my other pc lacks power?

Reverting back to the retail version did not fix my issue. The game still gets choppy after one battle and continues that way...and now I'm also getting 5+ minute load screens.

Funny thing is, I can play any of my other games without any problems... I really was looking forward to this game, but waited to buy it long after the release because I'm really losing faith in game developers...
