A bit of a funny story:
My Dogs name in real life is Kaida. Kaida means "Little Dragon". My War Hound in game is named Kaida, and thus the story begins...

Over the weekend I was playing and got into a fight with a dragon. Kaida was sitting next to my desk during the fight. The dragon kills everyone in my party EXCEPT "Kaida"
"Kaida" gets the killing blow on the dragon
I gave real life Kaida some pats on the head and said "good girl"
now what i find truly funny is that "Kaida" means "little dragon" so therfore: Little Dragon killed a Dragon.

I haven't used the dog much myself, any chance that by killing the dragon it had a special animation for doing it?

Is it just me or the dog is sub-par, performance wise in the group? He seems like a "poor man's choice" notably because, well, he can't get much gear diversity, and he has a limited amount of skills and customization.

Wouldn't having Sten or Wynne be more "effective" gameplay wise. Note that I said gameplay wise, I love him as a persona :bandit:. The only place I felt dog was lacking was dragon fights.. he'd usually run in, scratch him a few times, and die.

Huh, weird. What part of "giant AOE stun" isn't useful to you? That dog is awesome.

The dog is very effective.

There are a few notable reasons why he is good.

Early aoe stun. While other classes can get one, the dog gets one quite early.

Debuff, growl debuff is also early and effective.

He then has a good number of stuns and interrupts in the howl, charge, overwhelm, etc.

His damage is inherently quite high as well.

My mabari has been a permanent and effective member of my group since the beginning. I did a sort of D&D 4th edition party build thingy. Alistair as defender(tank), Morrigan as controller/healer, my own rogue as striker with some defending on the side and the dog as striker, with a focus on skirmishing and mobility.

Of course, I went right for the Nemesis talent for him, as I much prefer passive skills to activated ones, and it gives him a lot of staying power.

I love my dog for combat, but I generally leave him behind because of the limited dialog options with him. I even replayed a whole section of the game (recovering the Urn) when I realized Leliana would appreciate that experience more than my puppy. Still, he's an awesome NPC, fun to have in party and yeah, watching him maul an enemy while on fire is pure win.

Is there anyone who didn't think "hotdog" the first time they say their dog with the flame weapon buff? Posted Image

Amusement for 8 year olds; yes I know; but it gave me a chuckle. Posted Image

I don't use him simply because for this play-through I prefer the conversations of morigan/leliana/alistair. As for combat effectiveness - you guys are REALLY underestimating him. If it wasn't for his lack of a character voice, he'd be a permanent member of my party.

Hes a great companion early on, I eventually replace him with shale and never look back. I still think Bioware should have made him a pet and not a companion, like the Rangers have.

That's exactly my group, too, right down to my rogue. So far, it's been successful and we're doing fine.

I hate dogs so that pretty much ends my interest in a dog companion.

Ahh, so that's what happened to the dog. I casted Frost Weapons and he basically turned into an elemental canine. I'll start playing around with that more.... pretty cool.

I have to say increasing my dog's cunning improved his damage a lot. never under estame giving him some armor pentration ^^

he has good damage but its very non threating damage he never pulls agro so its a plus keeping stuff focused on main tank but sucks when ya need to get agrro off a mage or archer.

side note, dog attacks with quick hits is it his lack of big hits that keep him with a low agro genration?

Dog's the best tank I've found. He has high HP, a fast recharging AoE stun, gets his own (cheap, easy to make) health pots in the form of mabari treats (which also act as injury kits!) and, most importantly, he's utterly adorable. He also brings you neat goodies, like a high tier mage staff (that non mages can use, even) and a good helmet.

Are you kidding me? the dog is freaking awsome. If you demand proof of this simply get in a fight where there is at least one mage blasting the hell out of your team. Switch to dog have him use overwhealm and laugh in glee as that one move kills the mage while they scream in agony.

I love the dog but I just feel like he shouldn't even be a choice of party spot - he should always be in the party as a separate, unique slot since he's YOUR dog and he's not a "full" character on his own.

4 NPCs + Dog = Win. Is it possible to do? *puppy dog eyes at Bioware*

Those spells make both archery and Harald (my hound) extremely powerful early on. Lots of good tactics using him as the scout/on point when there is no rogue in the party. I find him incredibly useful, and a large amount of fun.

Yeap, Dog showing the benefits of the Flame/Frost weapons (let alone how DOES it work on his teeth anyway?) was an unintentional bug with his body and the visual effect. We decided to keep it as a feature because...

DOG IS A WEAPON.
