Veteran to Hardcore as vanguard

Evolving both pull and shockwave seems redundant to me. Since you're reliant on squad mate warp to set off biotic explosions, which is 'instant cast and hit'. So long as YOU have a straight line of sight to the body of the target your squad mates warp will hit it right away. Making it quite easy to explode a target of shockwave.
I never put more than one point in pull, a few seconds floating isn't enough? Group pull is a joke at 10 points invested, you're lucky to hit 2 enemies at once regularly.
Once I got the hang of ME2 Vanguard I wanted everyone (in game) to shut up so I could get to the next combat. Its very visceral once you know what obstacles/areas can glitch charge. Once you can string charges together and get your ammo powers to a decent level you don't want to talk to mouthy npcs, even party members you used to care about. You just want to dive into combat and destroy as only a vanguard can. It trumps soldier for excitement.
In direct opposition to most of the vanguard guides, I prefer my squad mates to be using squad incendiary ammo, while my shotgun has maximised cryo ammo. My squad mates strip protections letting me charge, charge, charge, and my shotty as often as not freezes my target for a melee shatter.
Squad mates who can supply squad incendiary ammo free up points I can spend elsewhere like a bonus power. I tend to pick a bonus power that lets me operate well from cover so I can mix it up anywhere on the battlefield, while biding my time for the right moment to charge.
The machine pistol from the Kasumi DLC makes assault rifles a redundant choice on the collector vessel and I loathe the way sniper scope activates when using any biotic power so I avoid that too. I am however not above editing the claymore shotgun to fire twice before reload rather than once.

I played the vanguard in ME1 because I liked the mix of biotic/combat. I was disappointed when I heard that the ME2 vanguard was going to be focused almost entirely on the shotgun. I tried to play a vanguard that didn't focus entirely on charge. I picked assault rifles for my bonus weapon and reave for my bonus power. It was ok, but it just felt like a gimped adept.
The fact that where you aim is actually where the bullets hit(big improvement over ME1), means any class you want can be "combat" oriented. As a former biotic focused vanguard from ME1, adept with an assault rifle is my preferred class in ME2.
Agreed. I've been experimenting with overpowered mixes of guns and biotics on the Adept. I really like how the biotics interact now. The new vanguard is little more than a charge monkey, and I found the obessive focus on charging and shotguns to become boring within a few hours of starting the game. No other class offers such a narrow selection of tactics, it's really disappointing.
My next playthrough will be an Adept with both the Widow and the Revenant, backed up with Tempest and Scimitar. That should be fun

Sorry, but Widow is soldier/infiltrator only and Revenant is soldier only. When you pick sniper rifle with adept on collector ship, you'll get M-97 Viper and for assault rifle I think it's M-8 Avenger. Pretty sure even soldier doing multiple playthroughs can't have both Widow and Revenant.

??
You can mix charge with other abilities. Ramming someone floating from pull/shockwave... a lot more fun than dropping a warp on them. You have ammo powers, can set up biotic combos, and a wide selection of weapon types. I found vanguards far more versatile than the other biotics which are limited to different flavours of sitting behind cover and popping their head above it to perform a little bit of damage. Never moving off their duffs until combat ends.
What other class lets you approach battle in a manner other than crouching in one place and just surviving an enemies frontal assault, picking them off front to back?

Yes, Tarifa, I know about the base game limits. Remember the part where I mentioned I mod my Adept with more guns? This is where the modding comes in.

Uh, well the Adept does it just fine.
I thought the old myth the class dictates how agressive you play rather than your own choice died out. Pity.
