Well playing through again (Origins) i had a chat with Alistair and he told me...

Not sure if this is a spoiler so those who havn't played through yet please don't look.

Alistair told me that part of the secret involving the joining was the life after. Apparently the wardens only have about 30 years to live after the joining.
That came as a complete shock to me. I never expected it. :(

So i will never grow old.

Yeah, maybe this should be in spoilers. Just to be safe.
Huh, I found that out on my first playthrough. I found Alistair hilarious so I talked to him like crazy. And romanced him. But then he fekkin ###### me! (Elf)

This was my Warden's reaction:Posted Image
This was mine: Posted Image

I suppose they never get happy endings after all. (Poor romancables as well Posted Image)

I liked it. It just goes to show how much a Grey Warden is willing to sacrifice for the greater good.

My mage character figured out how to control her taint. She ended up living until the age of 78. She died next to her lover, Leliana, and her 2 adopted children. She is currently sitting along side the maker with Iona on her side waiting for Leliana to join her.

@ Beta- Same here, but it was because the post-landsmeet conversation made me realize how horrible he was at picking what he wanted, so I didn't push to keep the relationship. I think I will this time though, for a change. I played a human noble.

But do you really want to live past 50-60 as a Warden? I think it would be rather boring after all the killing and such. I mean, retiring and living out your days all wrinkling and smelling and not being able to hear.

No i don't expect us to live that long as a warden....as we defeated the acrhdemon it would take far longer than 30 years to get another blight, so the wardens would be made redundant anyway.
But i certainly wouldn't want to die so young. Maybe some kind of medicine was invented to disperse the darkspawn blood from the wardens body...who knows.
Or maybe some new magic spell could be cast .
Ok, i'm clutching at straws here but please understand i want to enjoy living much longer to be with Leliana till i am old and grey....an old grey warden  :)

well, I always suspected that the wardens who lived to long turned into some kind of super darkspawn, being taken over by the taint, if they didnt manage to die in battle

I'm not sure it shows that really - the problem is that almost nothing of the sacrifices are told to the recruits before they join. Just that joining is dangerous.

I think it only counts as a willing sacrifice if you know about it before making the decision to join.

More than showing what the Grey Warden is willing to sacrifice, I think it shows what the organization of the Grey Wardens is willing to do, or conceal, to keep up it's membership. Not that this would not make the sacrifice a real sacrifice, of course.

I agree with you there, if anything duncan says it est when he comments that the wardens do what ever it takes to defeat the darkspawn. if it involves concealing the truth from potentials then so be it.. reminds me of buffy a bit. a warden like a slayer discovers they will never have a normal life, will die young in the service of others

Is there a specific way to get him to tell you the full story about this? I did on my first playthrough, somehow, but now I can't seem to get it right.

All he does now is allude to it when I ask him "is there anything else I should now about the Wardens"

He replies with "apart from dying young and etc. etc. you should have nothing to worry about" or something, as though I had heard the dying young story before.

I can't remember tbh. All I remember is him saying something about a wardens time and I asked "his time has come?" can't remember how I got it.

I guess you will. I mean, in a medieval setting mot people don´t live much longer than 45 - 55 years.

Your warden is between 16 an 20 at the joining, so you will live until 45 - 50 years. Exactly as long as you would as Non-Warden. Probably longer because the chances to be killed are much smaller.

Not to spoiler too much, but there´s a guy at Warden´s Keep you REALLY should have a chat with, he might help.....

How's that work?  They don't tell you about it ahead of time.  It was sacrificed for you, you didn't even get a chance to decide whether you wanted to sacrifice or not.

its part of the "What changes about you as a Gray Warden" conversation later.

I'm not too worried about the die young part.  After all what is there left to do after the blight? you have about 30 years left and NOTHING you do after that is going to match saving the world.  Kinda anticlimatic.

If you harden him after his personal quest and have your Coercion high enough, that doesn't have to happen. Or just don't make him King.

Death is meaningless when there's res spells:)

If needed, bio will write in a reverse ritual spell to cure us of the taint. I don't expect that to happen, but just saying.

Ay I did harden him, but because I was so stupid I didn't know what coercion did so I didn't bother much with that Posted Image It was my first time though so I really didn't know what would happen. I chose entirely wrong options anyway so I didn't have a chance.

Saving the world again? It is probably what the Warden would do, either that or get himself/herself in multiple life-threatening adventures. The Warden is like a magnet for trouble.
