Since Haasth's thread seems to be more directed towards the random. I thought I'd dedicate a thread to my personal preference, that being instrumental. Any genre will suffice, as long as it's all or mostly instrumental. So what do you have, I'd love to add to my library.

Here's one I remember from my old music library, which I deleted (the dumbest thing I've ever done).

I have somewhat of an Orchestral bent. Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". But in my opinion by far my most favorite has to be Samuel Barber's, Adagio for Strings.

When I first saw the movie Platoon and that played at the end I was awestruck. Then some years later I played Homeworld and that track was going when you get back to your planet and you find out were attacked in your absence. Love it. I guess it can be construed as depressing but still interesting to listen to.

Adagio For Strings is pretty cool but it tends to get over-used for sad themes in the media.

Really? I don't hear it all that often. Then again I don't watch a lot of news. I let my coworkers dictate what's worth hearing about. Apparently it's Lost, Dancing with the Stars and American Idol. I add into the conversation by applying my patented glazed over eyes and slack jawed stare.

I still won't let the fact that the media would abuse it to the point of hackneyed, to sour those bittersweet notes.

A few more I remember from my old library.

Troubadour - Couldn't find it on youtube.
Lost in Paradise - This one is a lot of fun if you play the piano.
Serenade

Sonata Arctica - Everything Fades to Grey

Fits for every mood. And never gets old, even after countless of hours spent in vigil while learning for exams, the snow was falling, the milky colored sky gloomed from the city light below... Good times :D

Oh and HammerFall - Something for the Ages how could I forget.

Treadstone Assassins-Bourne Identity, just something I really like as an instrumental.

Lots and lots of Apocalyptica. Hope for example.

Yoshida Brothers - Storm and A Hill With No Name.

Galneryus - the instrumenal version of My Last Farewell (I actually like it better than the normal one).

Pretty much everything by Corvus Corax. From Totentanz and Scotus to Quid Agam.

Eluveitie - Isara, Setlon, Andro, The Liminal Passage, and The Cauldron of Renascence.

Tom Waits is perhaps best known as a lyricist, but he's written some great instrumentals too, and often includes an instrumental or two on his albums.

A far too gorgeusly beautiful short instrumental piece:
Fawn
In a similar vein, though more jazzy:
Closing Time

Something else altoghether:
Russian Dance
Tango Circus Girl

There's also a YouTube user by the name of Waitswatcher who makes mostly instrumental versions of Waits material. Very high quality too. Here's an example:
Back In The Good Old World

I can't stress that Tristram from the game Diablo is likely the best instrumental I've ever heard...it just evolves so well.

Then theres the reggae influential instrumental from The 5th Element called Heat.

Then two of my favorite tracks off my workout playlist that happen to be instrumental are from Quake 2: Operation Overlord and Descent into Cerberon

...I can't believe my favorite instrumental tracks are just products of the entertainment industry needing 'background music'.

Aside from some of the video game instrumental tracks I've listened to, this one really caught my ears:
