Newer players, Casual Players and i dare say less power gamey players will, and do, find it more difficult. I ahve ahd no issue with the difficulty in DA. Upto a point (and its the same with the infinity engine games) you have a party which is organised, powerfully equiped and a set of tactics for said party that will conquer anything.

This, very much this.

BG2 is a poor comparison because I never felt in danger in BG2 because of the high level characters you had. DAO had all the "fragile" levels but BG1 let you get that vibe so you you comgo BG1/BG2 the difficulty was likely similar.

The only hard fights in BG2 were the nerfed up Lich and Mage fights where you had to play Rock>Paper>Scisccors with protection spells. Do I use Breech, Dispell Magic or Pierce Magic to bring down his Protection from Magic Weapons? Oh wait, I used that in my last fight and haven't slept since then...oops.

DAO got rid of that but the addition of flanking attacks really allowed the mobs to chew you up in a way they never seemed to do in BG2 with just melee weapons. The mobs also tended to use more special attacks on you - things like scattershot- than the BG2 mobs every did.

Dispel Magic, all the way. Keldorn FTW.

My second game, on nightmare, was a sword and shield warrior, and I raised every stat except cunning to at least 20 (yes, even magic). It was still stupidly easy, and at that point I really wasn't reading any guides.

I'm sorry you found the game too easy. I didn't.

In any case, there is a real difference between what you can learn on your own and what you gather from an online community. Given the question about how DAO compares to BG2, it's worth noting that today, many more players turn to the Internet to learn how to build their characters and how to handle certain fights.

A designer has the challenging task of making a game that's satisfying in difficulty for both a community and an individual.

This thread makes me want to make a mod with perma-death and no health regen except for resting with extremely limited health poultices. Seriously. Injuries are for ******. You go through the whole game killing everything in the same way they do, but when they manage to get your hit points to 0, they simply injure you instead of killing you. Kinda bull****.

And yes, Keldorn is the pimp-****ness.

I think the problems with difficulty stem from the fact there really aren't 4 difficulty settings.

Theres:

Easy - This is actually "Real time easy combat"
Normal - This is actually "Real time normal combat"
Hard - This is actually "Pause-combat easy"
Nightmare - This is actually "Pause combat normal"

That's how it feels anyway. I've also found with effort setting up tactics, I can do alot of Nightmare so far with 0 pausing - but obviously, the difficulty settings aren't the best in this game.

I think for future games, there should really be 8 difficulty settings, 4 for people who like to pause and 4 for people who don't.
