I apologize if there is a global thread for these kinds of questions, but oh well.

My question is, will my computer run Dragon Age adequatly? I have already tested the character creator and it ran perfectly fine on "Very High" graphics settings and the highest resolution with no graphical glitches, it loaded in seconds and had no slowdowns.

My Specs:
HP Pavillion dv9700 Entertainment Notebook
Windows 7 HP 64-bit
Intel Core Duo CPU@2.5GHz
NVidia GeForce 8600M GS
4GB RAM
DX Version: 11
Way more than enough HD space

So, from those specs here are my questions:
1.) Roughly, what would my framerate be on
a.) high detail settings?
b.) mid detail settings?
c.) low detail settings?

2.) What would I have to change my graphics settings (in DA itself) to in order to get a decent framerate?

3.) Based on the graphical experience I would be able to achieve, is it worth me buying this game now, or should I wait a few years for it to go down in price?

4.) Should I get a new computer if I am going to be playing games like DA

Thanks.

Your post is far too complicated compared to my experience with lower speed Geforces.  The desktop 8600 GTS seems to have all kinds of troubles with nVIDIA's drivers versus this game.  EA doesn't support laptops for their games, so if you had the same troubles with yours, they wouldn't even try to help you.  I have a geforce 9800 GT, with which I have had not particular problems, although I prefer using a faster PC here that has a Radeon HD 4850 in it.

If you had a desktop with similar components and a lot of patience, I'd say go for it.  Since you do not (have the desktop -- I don't know about the patience, of course), my personal opinion is to pass this game up for now and purchase a desktop when you can do so, not another laptop.

Q 1+2; You'll probably get away with a rather smooth medium-settings game play if you keep shadows off and possibly tone anti-aliasing/filtering down a little. The character creator is a very poor way to see what the game will perform like as it's nowhere near as intensive as the game itself. I won't promise a smooth 30-60, as the game's performance can go up and down, depending on so many factors - where you are, what you're doing, who's in your party etc.

As for question 3, it's already down in price in a lot of places. In the UK it launched at £30, and has already dropped to £15-20 in most places. Quick look on Amazon.com gave it as $36 dollars, but I'm sure you might be able to get it cheaper than that.

Question 4: Yes, if you want it to look rather nice and play a bit smoother. Gaming laptops are a bit poor, or at least rather cumbersome and a bit more prone to overheating. You don't need anything supremely powerful to get most games running on decent settings, so there's no point buying something with all the bells and whistles for the bells and whistles.

So, from those specs here are my questions:
1.) Roughly, what would my framerate be on
a.) high detail settings? - Probably around 15
b.) mid detail settings? - Maybe 30
c.) low detail settings? - Maybe 40-50

Hard to say what your frame rates would be, since we can only draw comparisons to what we have, and what we've heard from others. Especially since your video card is a laptop one, more on that later.

2.) What would I have to change my graphics settings (in DA itself) to in order to get a decent framerate? - I imagine you would have to run a majority of the settings on low.

3.) Based on the graphical experience I would be able to achieve, is it worth me buying this game now, or should I wait a few years for it to go down in price? - The better question is if you would even be able to run it.

4.) Should I get a new computer if I am going to be playing games like DA - I would suggest a new computer. Laptops are not designed to run games for a few reasons. First off, they clock down the processors and video cards to conserve power from the battery as well as to turn down heat. Laptops are also not designed for heat, so clocking those components up is pretty much out of the question unless you live in a freezer. Desktop PCs are more designed for gaming because you can more easily swap out parts, the parts are more powerful, and honestly desktops are probably cheaper and better since you aren't forced to compensate for prebuilt machines like laptops, you can included what components you want.

High - almost certainly unplayable

Medium - possibly 30fps, but you'll have to sacrifice AA and AF

Low - should be playable.

The main thing you'll need to do is download the latest graphics drivers. HP's drivers are years out of date. You may be able to download a compatible driver from the Nvidia site (hit and miss for laptops). If you have problems with compatibility, head over to Tweakforce or LaptopVideo2Go.

If you're serious about gaming, it's worth spending the money on a new computer.

Figure this thread would be the most appropriate one to ask this question

Will this be able to run DA?

SYSTEM COLOR NEW 2010 Intel®Core™ i3 - 330M

OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit

PROCESSOR Inspiron 15 Notebook

HARD DRIVE 320GB, 5400 RPM

MEMORY 4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz

SOUND OPTIONS High Definition Audio 2.0

VIDEO CARD Intel® HD Graphics

mostly concerned if the graphic card is appropriate for the game

Not really. It's far below the minimum for Windows Vista (the graphics card, that is), plus that HDD will not really be any good for gaming as it's got a rather low speed.

really what about a Intel® Pentium® Dual Core™ T4400 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB/1MB cache)
and a Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
video card, or still no?

Much worse.  Intel graphics amounts to a joke, and the Pentium Dual is just a Celeron by another name.  It might have been a Core Two once, but almost all of the normal onboard RAM was stripped out, leaving it horribly crippled, unless and until you replace the CPU cooler on it and then really hugely overclock it to 4 GHz or so.

Which isn't possible with laptops, unless my memory fails me.

Doubt you'll find one, sadly.

When they assemble them, the CPU is soldered in, not inserted into a socket, at least on on any sub-$900 models, so no, you can't get at the CPU cooler, whether the BIOS gave you access to OCing functions or not.  I don't know why I even mentioned the relative ease with which those Pentium Duals can be Overclocked.

For only $500, it's hardly possible to get a cheap desktop setup that will play games, unless you build it yourself!
