I was playing as a 2 hand sword Warrior/Templar, but the game seemed uncomfortably challenging on normal. I tried switching to casual, but the difference was insulting.

So I decided to try Mage since I had unlocked the Arcane Warrior and Shapeshifter spec. Playing as a Mage kind of trivializes the game, even more so when you have more than one Mage in the party, but I'm going to stay with the Mage because it's been more fun than my Warrior.

So who's a better tank? Alistair or Shale?

Shale. Not even a contest.

Shale seemed like a bit of a lesser tank when I'd originally switched him in for Alistair, but I realized I had only had Alistair tanking during the very beginning of the game, so I stuck with Shale. I love him to death now. He holds agro like a pro, the only caveat is that his health seems to sink like a stone during some boss encounters, during which I have Morrigan just cast Force Field around him. I really don't know how much better Alistair would have fared, but I can say that early on you may be frustrated keeping Shale up, but that dissipates as you go on.

I get attached to the party members I use early on and so I can't bring myself to use Shale even though his skills look incredible... Having said that Alistair has been annoying me a bit recently.

Shale is definitely more durable but Alistair has some really useful abilities, especially once he gets some Templar/Champion abilities.

Alistair for me, Shale is kinda adaptive in his abilities, mix of range tank or melee dps, cant have all 3

Alistair has become a really solid tank, i beat witherfang with the hordes of werewolfs as well (didnt sacrifice no elf) Alistair tanked fine, right till when he got killed and my arcane warrior mage had to tank the rest lol

Shale is better at tanking just by being there, but if you manage alistair's abilities I'm finding him to be more useful and better at it than shale is.

Shale might be better in early game but Alistair hands down late game. Once you give him a full set of DLC armor and with Threaten and Taunt he is a monster. My Alistair has 87 Def, 41 Armor, 313 hp's and can stand toe to toe with the orange bosses on Normal. Oh and fully maxed out shield trees helps huge too.

I also noticed that Shale's armor is rather low for a tank tank..

I got him really early on and his skills were comparable to Alistair's so I just put him in damage mode.

I may have over looked it.. but I also have Alistair with the "Cannot be flanked" talent and I didn't notice that Shale had it. Once you get Alistair Taunt (and same with anyone) it's pretty much game over for who the AI attacks. It does work with Shale also.. but his large Health Pool is no match for great armor.

If I have Shale I keep him for his damage and off-tanking.

I don't know how Shale's armor will compare to that of a warrior lategame. At the moment on my second playthrough on nightmare at level 12 Shale does just fine, alot better then my warrior main on hard did due to lack of gear. I expect Shale to drop in effectiveness compared to warriors as massive armor becomes available. This is of course moot if you instantly equip Alistair in the DLC armor or the **** ugly mass effect one.

It all depends on the armor crystals available lategame as armor is the only important stat except for health. Bossier mobs hit alot 100+ defense or not, but armor is always in effect.

Shale does seem to be a monster in threat generation however, being able to keep aggro on most mobs without even hitting them once with threaten and stone heart active. Add two aoe disables to that and he is hands down the most effective tank against white/yellow mobs. I suspect his resistances might make up for lack of defense/armor versus orange ones as well, but it remains to be seen.

Shales gets some nice "16 armor and tons of stat/bonuses crystals" that require 32 Con round level 13-15. And yes he has the best threat generation of anyone.

Shale + force field = who cares about armor? Send him in, let him grab aggro and Bellow once, FF him, lay down the pwnage with the rest of your party, loot your kills.

Shale with three mages makes quite a strong party.

I just went with Al myself. With the gear you get from the high dragon and bergens hat of 'You can't kill me' i capped out at 100 phyisical resist. I didn't use a pot for the rest of the game until the last encounter...
