What happened to him anyway, the last book I read with him in it, he escaped hell and was in some lab, resting.

***SPOILERS FOR DRAGONLANCE BOOKS***
Basically, as a punishment for trying to become a god, he gets all his powers stripped from him by the other gods. He then assists Palin, his nephew, to become basically the stongest mage ever to live and destroy the father of the 3 main gods (Paladine and the likes). Unfortunately, this means that all of the gods leave Krynn, taking magic with them. Raistlin then leaves "with" the gods, effectively dying, but I believe Paladine takes his soul as a reward for helping Palin.
***End of Spoilers***
He is still the most awesome mage ever to grace the pages of books.

So wait dosent that screw up everything with magic then? Or does it just mean no more spell casting?

Basically magic just doesn't exist anymore unless it was worked into an item, such as enchanted earrings and the likes.
The books after the gods leave tend to focus (mages-wise) on former mages relentlessly hunting magical artifacts so they can drain its power to fuel their spell casting, but obviously its finite. However, in the forest of wayreth, a new type of magic starts to emerge called 'wild magic'.

Regan Mahariel
Dalish Elf
Male
Rogue [Ranger, Shadow, Duelist]
1. Takes pride in his skill to destroy even the strongest of fighters in close combat
2. Enjoys making fun of Alister but unlike Morrigan still likes the dude.
3. Is currently looking for Morrigan and doesn't plan to stop till he gets a damn apology.
4. Actually kinda wanted to induce genocide on his people with the werewolves because he didn't want the damn lady of the forest to die (she was hot and they were guilty.. sorta... still resolved it "peacefully" though).
5. After he left his clan he fell in love with the human food Jerky and Bacon
BONUS: Secretly likes Vico- *ahem* I mean Velanna and wants her to call him "Male" and if was a Romance option would never had gotten together with Morrigan in the first place.

My first warden (Human noble male rogue)
1. Has an unusual degree of sympathy for the lower classes, for someone from his background and generally seeks to do the right thing.
2. Is impatient with concepts of honor and approves of assassination, poison and other “dishonorable” forms of fighting for their efficiency and reduction of risk and damage to innocent parties..
3. Is diplomatic to the point of being a bit oily, preferring to keep good relations with people and avoids fights when possible.
4. Resents having the future of the world laid on his shoulders and having to make decisions on the future kings of Orzammar and Ferelden.
5. Totally identifies with Alistair’s reluctance to be King and loves him.
My current warden (Elven female mage)
1. Despises the chantry and sided with the cult of Andraste purely to spite them.
2. Was eager to join the Grey Wardens, if only to get out of that damned tower.
3. Gets really annoyed with people who show surprise that the wardens allow elves and/or women to join.
4. She disapproved of Avernus’ actions because of their consequences for his subjects and his recklessness in summoning such large numbers of demons, but does not categorically reject the use of blood magic or dealing with demons when used carefully and for worthwhile ends.
5. Remains somewhat aloof from her companions.
