OK, as I recall killing the demon in the mage's cellar nets a mage belt and a warrior helmet, but what rewards you get if you make a deal and solve the fire thingy puzzle in the demon's room?
Shale puzzle rewards?

My mage got a freakin' awsome staff from the cat.
Not sure what the other classes get.

Nothing. You only get stuff from the demon's corpse. The Merciful wrote...

Wrong. As Reddragon wrote, you get a mage stave, if you stick to the deal with the demon. I also noticed solving the puzzle gives more XP.

Ah, I see. I never made the deal. well, I sorta did, but I successfully lied to Kitty, and attacked her after solving the puzzle and saved Amalia. I guess in that case I wouldn't have gotten the staff. The Merciful wrote...

Erm, what staff? I made the deal and completed the puzzle as a Mage and only received a belt. Likewise, there was no helmet.

The helmet is dropped after killing. You get the staff or whatever class item if you don't kill kitty and instead solve the puzzle. Solving the puzzle nets exp, so you can kill kitty later. The helmet is awesome.

The staff sucks, the best way to do it is solve the puzzle then kill the demon.

Depends on what you want. I recall I got to most approval from Sten by attacking the demon right away, with out solving the puzzle. You lose on XP tho. Choices, choices...DirkD13 wrote...

Pft, XP is limited in the game, approval isn't that hard.
Oh, I've solved the puzzle several times now, but having a sequence out should make it pass by quicker, thanks!

I think the optimal path is to first solve the puzzle and then kill the demon. This nets also amoderate amount of approval with most party members (~5 average) except Morrigan (that I know of), who takes a small penalty (-3, I believe).

My last playthrough I had Morrigan with me. Didn't lose any influence with her. (I lied that I would help, solved the puzzle, turned on the demon - as I do with every playthrough to maximize XP, hehe.)
