Avi Avrad? Thanks, but no thanks. This is the guy that casted a black dude as a Nordic god. And while as funny as a Shaft-esque Shepard would be, I think I'll have to pass. It'd ruin Mass Effect for me. A quote from the article, from Avi himself - "This story emphasizes the need for all cultures to learn to work together."

Why does a "black dude"  playing Shepard as to be "Shaft-esque"?  How about keeping your childish racist feelings to yourself and grow up.

As silly as it sounds at first, Mass Effect is a much better candidate for a TV show. Some form of TV canon could be established, then there is no reason to cut out scenes and characters to fit into a 2 hour movie, in fact it would be quite the opposite.

Think along the lines of Battlestar Galactica in terms of production values, now THAT would be great if they got a good cast.

Its obvious the movie will be based on the first game - if it does well it sets up the trilogy.

I am sure they will go with default shep (for story purposes) but as some have said give him an omni tool and some biotics. The only twist maybe LI.

For everyone throwing hissyfits - think of ME as the bok, the book is always better than the movie but that doesnt mean the movie has to suck.

The big concern is - this isnt Peter Jackson and Weta making it.

Hopefully they stay true to the characters - I dont see an issue with effects, all that stuff has been done in the past.

No they will save that for after the movies and games - maximise those profit streams

If they keep the same basic story and characters, I'll live. For shortening, maybe Wrex joins up cause he once worked with Shepard, or Garrus joins because he was a friend of Nilus, or he thinks Saren may have killed his father. Just something if needed to shorten the "Recruiting" period.

And, to save money....1. Hire Mark Meer, put him in the gym for 3 months-bam, you got your Shepard, original voice and all. 2. Hire Brandon Keener, Steve Barr, Liz Sroka, Ali Hills, and have them play Garrus, Wrex, Tali, Liara. CG or suits, whatever works. And you know you'll get quality from them. It doesn't have to be a pitch-perfect adaptation. I LOVED the Silent Hill movie, and I love the original game.

The movie is going to be absolute garbage. Video game movies always suck and this one is no exception. Anybody thinking otherwise is just being blindly optmistic.

I would actually quite like to see Shep use Adrenaline Rush in the movie.  Time slowdown ftw!

No, I don't think I will watch this unless they do something that seems really intriguing. My three Sheps Theresa, Eleonora and Lilly are enough for me.

This movie shouldn't be about Shepard's story.

That is all.

Shoko86 I agree that this movie shouldn't be about Shepard story. However the First contact war is all good for me.

Everyone working together, huh?

Star Trekkin' across the universe...

Is ME the same as Star Trek? All signs point to 'no'.

Everyone won't work together in ME. There are irreconcilable cultures in ME. Every race in ME thinks they know more than the others.

Heck. There are individuals who do things their own way regardless what anyone else does.

Working within the diversity without suppressing or subjugating cultures is what ME has been about.

Hearing this, though, tells me that ME3 is going to be all about making rainbow baskets with all the races of the galaxy out of golden unicorn testicle hair. Bleah.

Thought it prudent to copy over Legendary's resume from ye olde wikipedia to see just how worried or happy we should be!

Filmography

[edit] Released
  • Batman Begins (2005) - YAY! The villain's end plot and execution were weak but the set up and characters were ace. The studio gave them the money and a loose leash.

  • Superman Returns (2006) - Ditto as the above. Was also given a lot of love after it had been horribly abused in development hell by everyone and their dog.

  • Lady in the Water (2006) - Urrr...I can't comment. Its a marmite film. Love it or hate it...

  • The Ant Bully (2006) - Meh

  • Beerfest (2006) - THE WORST MOVIE EVER MADE. IT MADE MY EYES BLEED!! IT MADE MY MIND SCREAM. Basically the studios trying to shove as many ****** and fart jokes in a movie and trying to look cool. Fail,

  • We Are Marshall (2006) Meh

  • 300 (2007) - It may be ******-erotic as hell but God does it KICK ASS. Once again a good point for ME, it follows the comic book like it was the bible.

  • 10,000 BC (2008) - Meh

  • The Dark Knight (2008) - We're all geeks. I don't have to say this was a masterpiece. I don't have to say this was the comic book film we'll show our Grandkids someday. I don't have to say that every time we switch this film on and see the opening bank robbery our hearts still pound. Because its so freaking true.

  • Watchmen (2009) - They said it couldn't be done. The plot was too long. There were too many characters. It had strange sci fi themes and a dark outlook. Its followers were a dedicated cult audience. They did it. I think thats a pretty good reference for ME.

  • Observe and Report (2009) Great jokes. Never found its footing tone-wise.

  • The Hangover (2009) Great jokes. Hung around a bit (pun intended) but was good.

  • Trick 'r Treat (2009) Hmmmmm

  • Where the Wild Things Are (2009) Made a kids book an adult film. Made the magical element sinister. Genius or mess up? Audience choice.

  • Ninja Assassin (2009) Its no Beerfest but its still pretty bad. Decent action moments I suppose.

  • Clash of the Titans (2010) Epic fantasy brought to the bigscreen for big bucks. Thats the good news. The plot, actors, characters and narrative however...oh crap.

From what we can see in their work so far, Legendary seems to make great adaptations of previously established franchises but AWFUL pics based on original works. Their choice to develop the World of Warcraft movie as well either shows a balanced confidence in moving into a new wave of adaptation or magnificent hubris. They seem to not be afraid of producing works which go places the audience might not be used to going and have a decent sized budget.

Lets just hope they don't get first-time jitters and leave us all leaving unsatisfied.

I can't believe there's 10 pages of ranting about this movie, when we have so little information about it. How about saving the moaning until after the movie is actually released in theaters? I try not to judge a book by its cover, especially when the book hasn't even been printed and bound yet.

Kind of reminds you of the rumor mills back in Jr. High or High School doesn't it?

Hell the book hasnt even been written yet.   More like the author just said he was going to write a book and said what the genre was going to be.

Great, all we need is Uwe Boll as director and we're ready to rumble!

Based on who is working on it I am not terribly confident so far. It's likely to be an over the top, generic action movie with a few romantic twists that won't be fleshed out rather than Lord of the Rings in Space, which I think would serve as a better example of how to make an epic. If it crashes and burns like the Golden Compass, we may not ever see the rest of the series, lol.

The other thing to remember is the writers of the movie have great creative license to redo whole plot points as to be honest, ME doesn't have a HUGE fan base.  It is not like Halo where tens of millions have played it and expect and understand certain parts of the story or even like GTA.  As much as we like ME and Bioware, the games are still rather niche...

I'm going to be holding my judgement on Mark Protosevich until after the Thor movie comes out. If that ends up being a pile of crap I might be back here starting a letter writting campaign to Legendary Pictures get someone other than Protosevich as screenwriter. Of course its still just negotiations at this point. He might not even get the job.

The movie's almost certainly going to suck for the simple reason that, if it's based on the actual storyline of the games, it'll be almost entirely superfluous. As another random anonymous person from the Internet put it: "That's.... unnecessary. Mass Effect is already an interactive movie."

Of course, there might be some actual potential here if they write a completely new story for it, but somehow I doubt they'll bother.

A lot of movies are based on a videogame. Take Resident Evil, the film was good enough. And just recently Prince of Persia, I for one liked the movie. If they can do it on those games they can certainly do it on Mass Effect, plus the studio, Legendary Pictures has made some decent films like 300 and Clash of the Titans.

After some brief optimism, I have dropped my expectations back to a realistic level. It will suck, and the franchise will be scarred. I simply don't trust who is working on it.
