You could choose to live in Rivain. They apparantly don't worship the Maker and are on good terms with elves. Having qunari in the north would be a worry though.maxernst wrote...
No, Thedas isn't a very appealing place to live, and really your religion would be dictated by the society you lived in. Given the choice, I would be human because the elves are downtrodden and both dwarven and Qunari society are far too rigid for my taste. Since I really can't see myself as a Chasind, my only religious would be the chantry...I'd probably give it lip-service out of a feeling of social obligation but would have no real religious fervor.
If you lived in Thedas, which religion would you follow?

It's why even though I myself don't believe in any form of a God, my PCs always do. Back in those times if you denied the existence of God you would be either killed or ostracised, and Ferelden doesn't seem any difference - considering that the revered mother at ostagar called me an evil, blasphemous heathen for simply declining her offer for a blessing.

We may not have Magic here on Earth but we have enough technology to scare the pants off people from ancient times.

Fair enough. Whatever floats your boat.

If you don't believe in a religion then you're an atheist. An atheist is anyone who doesn't have a belief in god. Most of us are agnostic atheists, but some are "hard" atheists, who actually make the claim that there is no god, which is of course unprovable.
If you don't believe in any religious creed, it means you're non-demoninational. That is people have stated their non-denial of God without having to accept orthodox religious beliefs. On the other hand, religions (like Qun) establish rituals and worldview without (the significance) asserting the existence of the divine.

If I was honestly raised in the world of Thedas, would I have a choice as to what I believe? If you are a human, you are likely raised to believe in the teachings of Andraste. If you are a Dalish elf, the Creators, ect. In a feudal society with intense peer pressure and ignorance of outside belief systems, I would suspect we'd all believe what we were told with varying degrees of faith.

True. I'd rather live my life exploring, adventuring, rather than staying in a particular and/or with particular people and recite the chant or sing songs for the creators. I'd also wouldn't want to waste my life researching on the existence of The Maker/Creators.
And while I'm at it, I'll definitely learn about Dark Magic, the Darkspawn Taint, Old Gods and such, while being a Maleficar ofcourse.

Bad contradiction there. I know many people who do not like established Christian churches but strongly believe in some sort of higher being, some even in the actual Christian God and the trinity. These do not believe in a religion but would be offended to be called atheists - and likewise would I as atheist be offended by you calling someone who believes in god an atheist.

Well I wouldn't really have a choice to believe in what I wanted if I was a human/elf/dwarf/qunari because I would practically have their respective belief system hammered into me since birth without growing up hearing any outspoken criticism of them.
So have I as child had the Christian belief system hammered in my head, but that didn´t stop me to see it for the annoyance it is and turn away. In fact, my forced knowledge of the Christian faith helped me to dismiss it; otherwise I would probably not have cared enough.

I'm surprised at so many people saying they'd follow the Qun. I mean, it has that oppressive Maoist social engineering to it, and I don't know why anyone would enjoy that. "You have long legs; you're a dancer. You have strong shoulders; go chop wood." There's a reason why Chairman Mao doesn't have the greatest reputation worldwide, and it's for stuff like that.

Qun provides stability, place, and peace of mind. Religions tend to do it.
