Shepard will be male, definitely.

Who's on covers? Who's on trailers? Who's on posters? Who's icon for series?
Male Shepard.

Sorry, femsheps, but galaxy is not ready for you.
Because you suck!

Pretty good news, methinks. The names on the rollcall mentioned thus far have done some very good work between them in the last decade. And ME is such a filmic game in the most part that I can foresee a fairly gentle transition. Of course, I expect it to be pretty CGI-heavy stuff - but then what isn't these days? And a lot of its success will depend on which characters from the game [and storylines, locations, etc] are used in the film. And then there's the question of who will be cast in the key roles. Expect a forum thread featuring peoples' wishlists fairly soon.

All in all - I'm in favour!

I can see the movie being unrelated to the game in most senses. I can see some guest appearances and possibly an ending allusion to the game. And as to canonization of certain aspects of Shepard and what he does. The default Shepard that comes in the game is the figure head of the game so i would expect that whatever the default Shepard does is what bioware will go with. So sorry i think he will be male among other things.

If the did it motion capture or CG, and used the original voice actors, that would obviously be way better, but then it comes back to why go see a movie that follows the same plot you just spent hundreds of hours participating in? It's seems nonsensical because there is nothing unknown.

When they bring books to film they are changing mediums, letting you experience the story in a different way, but the ME games are already so cinematic they are practically a movie already, but the best kind - the kind where YOU make the calls.

If it is a prequel I'll go, but if they remake the game for GIJoe-15 yearold summer movie guy, I'll wait until it comes to HBO.

AWFUL, Awful idea, how the hell are you supposed to make a movie based on the most free RPG game ever made!? I really apreciate Bioware's work, and am a massive fan of the ME franchise, but I never thought they would sell out in the end to make some tacky movie. I am very disappionted and even angry with this absurd thing, and even though Mass Effect 1 and 2 are my favorite games, I certainly won't be watching the film.

Way to ruin the franchise Bioware. Image IPB

I'm with you on this one. I doubt I'd go see this film. I'm afraid it might ruin the whole point of RPG gaming. RPG's should not be made into films!! Isn't it obvious why?

This is no good.

Mass Effect game (story only): 15 hrs

Mass Effect movie: 2 - 3 hrs

They're going to have to cut 80% of the content out to fit it in a movie. Also, one of the great joys of ME is the opportunity to make your own choices. Will it be a paragon Shepard? Female renegade? Male paragade who romances Ashley, Virmires Kaidan, kills Wrex, saves the Council and promotes Udina? ... You get the idea. The movie will only be able to address such a tiny portion of Mass Effect universe, there's no way a movie will do it justice.

And then there's the plot. It has a hook, rising action, climax and conclusion. But there's no midpoint crisis. In every movie, there's a point at which you think all is lost, there's no way Shepard will defeat Saren. The closest thing to this is Virmire and the council grounding the Normandy. Both of these events are resolved fairly quickly and in the case of the Normandy, not even resolved by Shepard. What needs to happen is Shepard needs to face a circumstance in which his/her leadership skills are not enough. After s/he fails, Shepard then needs to launch a last ditch effort where everything is on the line. While the galaxy is on the line during Ilos and the final Citadel battle, nothing is personally on the line for Shepard and it wasn't due to Shepard's failure. These elements make for good movie making. Unless they do an entire overhaul of the plot, ME doesn't have these elements and thus will fall flat.

Every popular game is eventually made into a movie. 90% of the time they screw it up and we as the avid gamers are left diappointed and angry. So here is my suggestion...make a movie that defies the standard and put a female Shep as the lead and make her an unknown actress. Base this on submitted photos from the fans and vote to see who they would like to have represent their ideal Shep. If you are going to do this then let us as the fans and ones to go see the movie determin how it is that we want to see it. Don't make the same mistakes that the other studios do and make us all wish that we never bought a ticket.

Its the studios job to make those decisions. IF you want them go be a movie producer. But for now i think you should probably assume that if Shepard is going to be portrayed at all it will be by a male.  And besides .... hate to break it to you sweetie...but if fans got to decide.....i think Shepard would still be male. As much as i appreciate female gamers....you unfortunately are a minority.

This is a terrible terrible idea. The main point of Mass Effect was the CHOICES you made as Commander Shepherd and how they affect the Galaxy around you. The game itself is so cinematic that making a Movie based off of it, where the audience have no control over the decisions of the protagonist, is only going to alienate the original fanbase and turn off new audiences from trying out the games.

Video Game Films have had a notorious history of being poorly translated, MAX PAYNE and DOOM and SUPER MARIO BROS. are prime examples. It's rather like translating a 1000 page book into a 2 hour film. Shrinking a 40+ hour game into a 2 hour popcorn fest is just not going to work.

I understand how Hollywood has run out of ideas and is now turning to Video Games for inspiration, but games like Mass Effect and DragonAge and BioShock where there is actually player Choice involved is simply not going to cut it in a Movie theater. I will continue to play the Mass Effect and sequel because if love it, but I cannot appreciate the decision to make them into a Movie. Just my opinion.

hundreds of hours

Hundreds of hours? There isn't even 50 hours in ME1+ME2 with all DLC's.

That's more like a very expanded FPS, than classical RPG like Gothic.

I am not 100% sure a movie not about Shepard would do that well with people who are not fans of the games

I take it the 3rd game will be out before the movie hits so that will not be a problem plus if the first does great they can maybe make a trilogy one movie for each game

...I don't know what to say to this. Other than 'oh no'. Everyone thinks movies made of video games would be awesome... but then look at the history. Resident Evil may have been entertaining, but as far as its connection with the games goes, it sucked. Bloodrayne is probably best never mentioned again, forgive me for doing so now. If Prince of Persia goes down the tube, I will have lost all hope. I think, personally, it's harder to make movies out of video games than it is out of books. Because at least with books, what you've imagined is vague and more like a fuzzy dream... with video games, your images of what things should look like are very concrete and easy to compare, right before your eyes.

Plus, making a movie that stars the male Shepard face on the covers of the game, is going one step further into alienating the players from their games. The devs worked so hard to make the game immersible, but if you go and make a movie where there's only one face, it disconnects every person whose Shepard DOESN'T look like that. I mean, it's weird enough watching someone else play a female Shepard with the same voice that looks different.

Whatever happens with the plot, the movie should include a gratuitous asari-human lesbian sex scene, as an F-U to Fox News.

I can't see this working out. At all.

Both mass effect games are very thin on story, the movie would have nothing to attach itself to, requiring the directors to make up a whole lot of new stuff as simply translating the optional side quests into movie plot wouldn't work; no one wants to spend the majority of a movie watching trivial things occur. Why is inventing new stuff a bad idea? It isn't for everyone, I for one dislike to see movies chop and slice intellectual property up into little pieces and poorly glueing together the bits that are "safe" by movie industry standards. hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, the spiderman movies, they were all poor tributes to the works they were based on.

Another point is that the science in mass effect isn't logical; considering it's the title of both games one would expect bioware to have spent a little more time thinking about it. If we subtract the whole mass effect notion from mass effect, we're left with a bunch of aliens in a big galaxy with a nearly invincible enemy coming etc., how many people are going to walk away from this movie and not simply call it a star wars clone?

A final point is the whole combat experience. Gunplay aside, biotics are, in lore, immensely powerful, in game they are kept neutered for balance purposes. Either the film keeps this trend up, which basically results in shepard being a superhero as he's the only one with a certain set of skills (which would be ridiculous) or shepard dying within the first 10 minutes of the movie because an enemy vanguard charged him into the middle of next week.

I'm happy for bioware that this is happening for them, I just wish they'd have picked a more substantial franchise to do it with.

Very good!

Mass Effect - First Contact? The First Contact War is about humanity's encounter with the Turians, and how humanity in the end kicks their ass. To me, that sounds like a fairly generic action sci-fi.

It doesn't have to "generic action sci-fi." A lot of emotions can go into fighting a war. Plus, it's "first contact." There'd be the issue of prejudice and racism between the species that can be touched. It doesn't have to be an all-out action film... then again, either way, there will be action.

Hybschmann wrote...

No, they should definately make a movie about the first game. The Mass Effect movie has some nice themes in it, where the humans are actually the aliens in the universe - nobody knows what they can do and everyone's afraid of them, but then Humanity steps up in the form of Shepard, who saves the galaxy and shows what humanity is capable of, and the aliens - personalized by Shepard's teammates - finally learn to trust and accept Humans (or in the case of a Renegade: depend on them.)

I've already played through most of the endings. Male/female... paragon/renegade... different love interests. I can just as easily play the game if want that experience. Like I mentioned earlier, it just seems like a repeat to me.

Hybschmann wrote...

Oh and: Who cares about the fact that the plot can branche in the game?
In ME2 it is clear that there already is a default ending of the first game - the one you are served if you do not import a character.

I care (as well as a few others probably), and the purpose of Mass Effect games is to form your own Shepard and story. Making decisions and experiencing the consequences of your actions in the game.

Hybschmann wrote...
And I'm sorry to say it, but it's also pretty clear from the ME2 trailers that this default Shepard is MALE and that he looks like this:  http://larcho.files....2-shepard.jpg.

Also, we know from the default ending of the first game - that Shepard is basically renegade, though I can imagine, if it's going to be a Hollywood-movie, that they would probably go for the paragon-ending - which personally is also my favorite, since it fits the theme of the first game better, in my opinion.

Again, I don't care if "default" Shepard is male or renegade... or what have you. I've played through both genders and renegade/paragon endings; also I like both sexes and I'm fine with either ending.

All in all, they should go for a new story and plot (something we've never seen before) because going off the first game would be redundant -- only this time you don't have control over the character's actions. For those of who already played through the game, it could be a little dated and boring. For average movie-goers... maybe not. Also your idea of a "default" Shepard might not be the same as BioWare's. Next, most game-movies tend to fail... so I do not want the "Mass Effect movie" to fall into that category of lame because it just might ruin the franchise for me.

So... I support First Contact War as the plot of the ME film as it seems appropriate. If not, I'll try not to turn into a raging nerd come release day of this film. :P I can choose not to watch the film, no one's forcing me. =]

I just read through the first page and skipped a lot of this thread. But I personally don't see the problem with just using the original story. Just use the paragon path without the side quests. I really really don't see an issue with it. I wouldnt mind just seeing the series put on film. It would be ten times better than the game in terms of visuals so it would be very different from playing the actual game. Plus hollywood probably has repetivity in mind it wont be exactly the same no matter what. Again, I would just be happy seeing the games story on film with all the effects.

I hope I am correct in assuming this will take a story set in the ME universe, rather than one of the games as it's basis? Because the game stories translate rather badly into film due to their open-ended choice-driven nature. :)

I don't know why everyone is complaining. chances are they will make a film based in ME universe and then base the new spin off game after ME3 on the film. or better yet, use the film as an intro to ME4 :)

I would sign on each and every word. It's pity that the delusion of a "Big-Buck Box Office" blinds the Bioware's executives.
