Otherwise I am not interested in placing Shep into a "canon box".

Anyways, since today is officially a month since the announcement of a live-action film of Mass Effect, the first part of the list has been finished. It contains all of the characters in ME 1. For those who haven't seen the list yet (shown below), it addresses the actors and actresses that were chosen to play a role in ME on this website to benefit everyone so that no one has to look for which actor/actress should be which. However, the list that has been revised since the list on pg. 101 has doubled the amount of characters and actors (voice actors included), making the list incredibly extensively and ridiculously insane. Here is the list of the whole ME cast:
The List (part 1 – All ME 1 characters)
(Note: The list is in no particular order, only has names, & all the VA’s are included on the list – even additional roles for VA’s)
Thoughts?

I believe the problem with the whole Baldur’s Gate trilogy was that the novels were based directly on the story of the BioWare computer games (which I also worked on). Basing novels directly on BioWare games is difficult. The games allow players to create their own main character, but in the book we have to select a character for you. Players could be male, female, elf, dwarf, wizards, thieves – but in the book they were locked into a male human fighter. Obviously this makes it hard for them to identify with the main character. In the game up to a dozen different side characters could join with the player and share their adventures. In the book we had to select 3-4 side characters at most, and inevitably we left out characters players liked. One more problem - the game was 30 hours long and had over 500,000 words of dialog. Condensing all that into an 80,000 word novel is bound to leave players feeling let down.

I don't have high expectations for any film based on a game. I think that the Mass Effect film should generally stay away from Shepard. It can focus on some of the important secondary characters and background story and still succeed.
Addressing previous skepticism about how having a defined "Shepard" in the film might throw things off, Drew Karpyshyn answers this pretty well. He is the author of Ascension, Revelation, and was the lead writer of Mass Effect, so his word is definitely something to be considered.

I know that some of the choices for Shepard are downright terrible or humorously stupid, but there were people that had chosen David Beckham or Samuel L. Jackson or Chuck Norris as Shepard or even Arnold Schwarzenegger as Sovereignpeastri wrote...

None of these particularly peak my interest for John (and the thought of a few of them gives me a bad taste in my mouth)... Though technically Shep can look like anyone I would prefer they stick as close to the default as pos. My pick would be Henry Cavill. When I saw him in Tudors my first thought was if they made a ME movie he's got to be Shepard.

I'm kind of hoping the film is a prequel to ME1. I feel that's the best way to incorporate Shep without ruining the 'choice' aspect of the game.
I'm SO glad we're on the same page. Again, the list is displayed so that everyone can see the choices in which they had believed they could possibly play Shepard (even if it's hilarious or ridiculous). Luckily, I have revised version of the list that does NOT have any of the actors listed above. The Revised List will be shown very soon.JohnnyBeGood2 wrote...

Here's John:6. Robert Downey Jr.(action star overkill, too expensive, not a personality match even slightly with the game shep)8. Johnny Depp -(doubt he'll be into "getting buff")16. Mark Meer (VA)(just no, debatable VA, no acting chops at all)21. Keanu Reeves- (doubt he has the resolve to do it... last 10 years have been quiet)28. Sean Connery(just no)31. Arnold Schwarzenegger- ( just no)35. Viggo Mortensen -(just not this kind of actor, would be great if he did it though)43. Heath Ledger(don't spoil the list, he's dead)60. Mel Gibson -61. Russell Crowe- (I'm an aussie too, need 12 kegs of beer for Mel to do Shep, but his body doesn't have legs anymore. And haven't you heard? Russll is a **** to work with)63. Rowan Atkinson -(Bean Shepard! ugly shep would be funnier)73. Charlie Sheen –(Pay would be too high, unless you waited until 2.5 men was finished.)
I totally agree 100%Hough wrote...
I personally think you go with Matthew Fox. The guy has a clean schedule for the next couple of months, he was in Lost and did a very good job acting. He's up and coming, won't be as expensive as a lot of you guys have down. On top of that he'll want to act his butt off for this film. This will be one of his first "major" films, so in other words He'll try hard, care for the movie, and finally will stick it through if there is a trilogy. I personally think he even looks like Shepard.
I think if you get actors like (Mel Gibson, Christian Bale, etc...) your gonna have issues with this film. They are just going to get their ego's involved.
But either way I hope it pans out. I would pay good money too see this film done right.
