Come on Legendary/Bioware! She would be an ideal shot for the starring role of Shepard - It's been ages since there has been a good action movie heroine

Honestly, I would love to see either a male or female Shepard in the movie, but lets be honest, it'll be male. Is that fair? No, but it is that way for a reason: despite the large number of women who play Bioware games (arguably a higher percentage than most other game companies fanbase) is still a smaller amount than the stereotypical video game player: males between the ages of 15-30.
Why? As you yourself say, the movie Shepard shouldn't be "our" Shepard, so why should it cater to the majority of game players? So that they can more easily insert themselves into the role of the main character? I'm sorry but that's a really stupid reason. If the Mass Effect movie is going to be any good, the writers need to take some risks and make telling a good story a priority over pandering to gamers. They need to make the choice of what movie!shepard is going to be like on the basis of the story they are trying to create, not "my" story or "your" story or the story of "the stereotypical video game player". The movie needs to be able to stand on its own or it will be absolutely terrible, like most game to movie schlock. I really think Bioware can do it too, but only time will tell.

a) A story different from the game - All the games to movies that stick too much with the game settings have failed.
c) Choose the *right* director, top-line directors do not equal to success.
The movie will definately ****** off some fans, so just get used to it.

Again, Good luck bioware can't wait to hear some more info on actors/roles and maybe a little info if your going to stay with the "baseline" Mass Effect story line or not (doesnt have to be identical to ingame) just wondering like the rest really

Did you miss the answer to your question in the section of my post you quoted? Because its right there. The Shepard in the movie (assuming there will be one) will most likely be male, because the majority of video game players are male. Movie studios also know they're more likely to draw bigger numbers with a male lead in an action movie than a female. Its unfair, but its true. That isn't to say there aren't exceptions, as Ellen Ripley from the first two Alien movies is one of my all time favorite characters, but for the most part it is a fact.
And I'm not sure about your comprehension of my post, but it had nothing to do with putting you into Shepard's shoes in the movie. There should be a disassociation in this case...this isn't the video game, you're not the girl or guy in the space suit shooting things...you're the guy or girl in the audience watching a movie about a girl or guy in a space suit shooting things (oversimplification x10, but bear with me). Its not at all about "inserting yourself" into the role of the main character, as you put it, but just the opposite. The movie Shep (assuming there will be one) is not YOUR Shepard.
Movie studios make movies to make money. If a studio exec thinks the Mass Effect movie is more likely to make more money with a male in the lead, thats how its going to be. And considering the fact that the merchandising, artwork, etc predominantly features the MALE version of Shepard, I don't think its coming from out of left field to assume its likely they'll cast a male.
Personally, I'd be fine with it either way (female or male Shep), but if Shepard is included in the movie, it'll be a male, I really have no doubt of that.
As for the story, thats something else entirely. Granted, the story should serve to tell the most interesting, attention-grabbing tale it can, and based on the source material I have high hopes it'll pull that off, but that has little to no bearing on what I wrote. I was merely focusing on the fact that if Shepard is included, it'll most likely be a male actor, and the likely reasoning for it.

With all of the Aliens and the like, it would have to have a substantial CGI element to it.

Please, don't make it suck.
Considering Lionsgate's Track Record, i think we are safe from a bad movie.
I just hope they go for a more mature approach to the movie with a serious theme instead of something dumbed down "for tweens". Gritty is in vogue, but really, Mass Effect shouldn't fall into that trap either. The sets don't have to be sterile, but should have the same look and feel of the in-game settings. Clean environments where need be. The characters are the driver in ME, most all are colorful, yet tragic and carry that burden with them. Use real fabrics and leathers for costumes, styled like the game itself. Keep the character animations dull and un-glossy. Keep the dialog serious, let the humor come from the outside world to break the tension, but at a minimum. Keep that sense of urgency.
