Considering Lionsgate's Track Record, i think we are safe from a bad movie.

I just hope they go for a more mature approach to the movie with a serious theme instead of something dumbed down "for tweens".    Gritty is in vogue, but really, Mass Effect shouldn't fall into that trap either.  The sets don't have to be sterile, but should have the same look and feel of the in-game settings.  Clean environments where need be.  The characters are the driver in ME, most all are colorful, yet tragic and carry that burden with them.   Use real fabrics and leathers for costumes, styled like the game itself.   Keep the character animations dull and un-glossy.   Keep the dialog serious, let the humor come from the outside world to break the tension, but at a minimum.  Keep that sense of urgency.

Completely agree.  In term of humor, as long as Joker is included we'll have that element.  Love your thoughts on how the film should look though.  Good stuff.

I sense major epicness in the works. I know of course that the final plot will be up to the company, but I would dearly love to see the discovery of the Citadel and First Contact as the focal point. It would totally negate the whole 'everyone has their own Shepard' argument. Not to mention giving us a whole new perspective on ME history, which we can add to the novels and gameplay canon.

I hope they can get Erica Cerra from EUREKA to play Ashely Williams! That would be amazing!!!

The Mass Effect series has some of the best movie potential that I've seen in video games. It is cinematic, wonderfully written, and full of interesting developments as well as powerful themes.

Problem is, video game movies have a nasty, NASTY reputation for being bad. My instinct as a gamer and a film fan tells me that with Mass Effect, it's either going to be a resounding success, or a flop. There's no in between on this one. Either it's done and done well, or it doesn't live up to the games we know and love.

However, being as it seems to be being made by good names in the business, I am starting to get my hopes up. I'm going to see it regardless, and purchase it just the same, but tell me ladies and gentlemen...would this not be a HUGE step forward for gaming as a narrative medium and art form if a video game movie game out that not only did its source material justice, but also impressed movie-goers as well? I think we're getting there. But this movie could be far more important to gaming's evolution than it is just as a film. We'll have to see.

Needless to say, I'll be keeping my ear to the ground with this one, waiting and hoping for good news. And you can bet I'll be there opening night.

Indeed, so long as they find some one extremely brilliant to play shepard, I could less what its about.

Not to mention the beautiful artwork, I mean come on. From The Citadel to Omega, Illium to Tuchunka and the many Missions in between. Its all beautiful no matter how you look at it. I also very much liked the art in The Project Overlord DLC.

Majority of movies based on games fail becuz most of the time the movies never follow the true stories of the games... they always change key elements.

also they always tend to use a well known actor as the lead which is insta-fail! They need an unknown who has the natural appearence of a battle shepard/ unknown lead eg: jason Stratham (example only for the look and talent)

Hope they will use Avatar's CG facial tech. Despite some people may not like the film, the alien facial emotions are the best I've seen so far. Mass Effect has so many alien species, this tech will make those aliens more convincing than those in traditional sci-fi movies.

I personally can't recall many memorable aliens in Star Wars series or Star Trek series. As famous as these two big titles, most main characters are human or too much human-like.

A decent match for the part would be Matthew Fox, who played the aptly named Jack Shephard in the series LOST.

Speaking of which, I've always wanted to make him in the custom character profile.

I'm glad that they are making a Mass Effect movie. I have the same concerns most people do, especially when I think of other videogame - film adaptations. Most end up being in the range or terrible to average. But Mass Effect has a good story, good characters and already has a fleshed-out universe. I just hope the writer does not feel the need to change the story as many seem to when they do these adaptations. If they make a film based on the ME1/ME2 storyline then fine, just don't change the story. Add to it where necessary, but don't contradict the existing story and characters. If they make a film based on some other events in the ME universe then that's fine too if it fits with what is already canon.

It has the potential to make a great movie if it's done right but that's a big "if". I'll keep my fingers crossed...

I honestly think the movie should involve.... a 17 year old Gillian grayson(played by Dakota Fanning) With Kahlee Sanders (Played by Nicole Kidman) David Anderson( Played by Wesley Snipes if possible.) and Aria T' Loak (Played by angelina Jolie), And it features Gillian Exacting revenge on ceberus, and Aria Doing the same thing also Finding out that the Illusive man is the one behind Liselle's death. I think that would be an excellent movie. It follows the books and doesnt mess the shephard plot. and then in ME3 Gillian should be a recruitable character. ALL AWESOME IDEAS I KNOW!!!

P.S. Joker should be played by the real Seth Green lol.

I am also greatly worried about this production. There is still nothing alike sneak prewiews, trailers, advertisements, that would give us a slight sight of the incoming movie. About simplyfying the story for allage groups ( so called twelwes ), I suppose there is nothing to worry. The game from the very beginning was meant for older players, and the movie should'nt be any different. The game shows violence, drugs and other stuff like this, but the story would be plain and completely not interesting without those.

I hope that this movie gets and "R" rating. However, I've got a feeling that it will be rated "PG-13".

I agree completely; except that Star Wars did have memorable aliens. Twi'leks, especially from Knights of the Old Republic, have had a major impact on the development of certain species in ME; mainly the Asari. Compare Mission Vao and Liara T'Soni.

I'm not opposed to a PG-13 rating. I mean Avatar was PG-13 and it included a great deal of very graphic violence. Drugs are referenced in ME, but use is not illustrated so that shouldn't be a hurdle either. And Avatar even managed a sex scene. So, I don't think ME being PG-13 is a deal breaker. Aliens vs. Predator this isn't.

My hope is that the fact that Shep can look like anyone is taken advantage of in the casting and that the subject matter is respected. I really hope/wish that Idris Elba is cast as Shep. He has all the talent in the world and he can land a joke to boot (watch Rock n Rolla and the Wire).  It sucks that Joss Whedon is attached to Avengers now, because he would be perfect for this film. Nobody does a group dynamic better than him, and ME fits because although Shep is the center, the story is really in the folks around him.

Star Trek 2009 was just the beginning, Mass Effect should be treated seriously the same way. It has an original story and characters, preying upon a chosen market will not give justice to this superb game.

Ah, talking about the forsaken PG-13 rating, it ruined quite a few movies that could be great. Just imagine Seven, The Shawshank Redemption or Pulp Fiction tune down to PG-13, it would be disastrous.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with the rating itself. Studios are just getting greedier to milk more audience, however, sometimes the backfire turns the movie into a complete flop or perform badly.

There're certain movies just don't fit into lower ratings.

i hate the idea of a mass effect movie mostly because i know theyre probly goin to ruin the mass effect universe but they could do a few things to make it an alrite movie.

1. just make it completely cgi (only way to keep all voice actors and will make everything weave together smoother than if we had actual actors) .

2.make it a male shep (cmon guys, thats who they advertise on the box art and commercials so theres no way fem shep will be in it... and while we're at it they should make it the default shepard cus most people are familiar with that look).

3. go mostly paragon choices from the game. (even though renegades are hilarious)

4. STICK TO THE STORY LINE AND DONT LEAVE ANY DETAIL OUT.

5.keep up the humor from mass effect.

6. for the love interest... well idk since people grow attached to characters (personally for me liara and tali) but maybe have a community vote on that. (even though thats probly a bad idea too).

but who am i kiddin. even if they did all this i still wouldnt be to much of a fan of the movie since mass effect should remain a game. please dont ruin this masterpiece

Do you think (Mark Vanderloo) will be playing Shep? or do you think they will get someone else to play him?

Itd be awesome if this movie was about the first contact war. It'd be so epic. Humanity just discovering alien technology and then an all out war with the turians.

i agree with swiftsarcasm on most ideas. i dont like the cgi tho. if they cast it right they can do a great job. but no way should there be a female shepard. thats just outrageous.

"The videogame Mass Effect will become a live-action 3D film. The sci-fi epic follows the space adventures of Commander Shepard in the year 2183. Humans have become third class citizens in a world filled with aliens, sentient robots, and secret agents. Mark Protosevich adapts the script for Legendary Pictures." from http://www.hsx.com/security/view/MSEFC

Great! Use my music like soundtrack :-) http://www.soundclick.com/eusantis

I am very curious about what period of time will be narrated in the film... Will be the game trilogy in the movie, or the story will be that of the books, or maybe something new, but linked with the others?

Mmm, i think this would be too obvious. Not very surprising. I´ld prefer some of these images like flash backs.

Vanderloo is just a model. They shaped the head of Shepard from his, that's all. id'rather see the guy that make Shep's voice in his role.
