It is also possible that they could use Mark Vanderloo as the actor, but voice over with the the game's voice actor.

But personally I dont need it to be the same guy, I'd rather it be a capable actor.

In regards to the idea of the movie telling the story of and the events leading up to the first contact war, that could actually be a genius move! It would introduce the Mass Effect universe to people who never have heard of it before, and set itself apart from the games in a way that augments them. If the movie was a success, they could move on, eventually covering the first game, and then the second, if popularity is still high.

Honestly, the potential for it all is incredible. But then again, there's potential in a lot of things. The real question is whether or not it will be realized.

that kind of stuff requires magnificent acting skills. I'm pretty sure letting wanderloo do the voicing will be less... worse...

Would be a pretty nice move!

I guess the only way an ME Movie might work is if it's not about Shepard but just take an other story
like the First Contact war.
but i'm not too fond of a ME movie anyways..
Hollywood has already proven that they usually Screw up movies like that.
usually there is no consistency wit the game they took the story from.
or they just put in some BIG name actors who are totally unbelievable in the set role / enviroment
since when it comes down to the Game ---> Movie thing then Hollywood has little to no imagination and just try to make a quick buck whit something they think will sell well.
but what do i know??
they going to do the movie anyways, but i for one do not expect anything of it,
it probably will suck like a hover....

Ah, talking about the forsaken PG-13 rating, it ruined quite a few movies that could be great. Just imagine Seven, The Shawshank Redemption or Pulp Fiction tune down to PG-13, it would be disastrous.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with the rating itself. Studios are just getting greedier to milk more audience, however, sometimes the backfire turns the movie into a complete flop or perform badly.

There're certain movies just don't fit into lower ratings.

I agree, but Mass Effect is in no way comparable to those movies. Seven and Pulp Fiction had a large amount of extremely graphic violence, of which ME has none (the most graphic part of the game is when the Russian scientist is killed by the Rachni). ME also has no strong language, and one PG-13 level sex scene. This movie could easily be PG-13.

set for 2012, huh? well at least that gives them time to work on it.

As for Vanderloo, some part of me thinks he isn't a native english speaker. I might be wrong though. I feel like I read that somewhere.

I absolutely agree, the movie should not be about the games themselves.

I am afraid they will be because it is the easiest / most profitable way to pull it off but they'd never be able to reach a credible amount of consistency. The change of actorsand voices alone would through off everyone who knows and came to like the characters from the games (esp. Shepard, it would be very weird to suddenly have Mathew Fox or whomever standing in front of the camera with a totally different voice).

I am not very convinced the first contact war would make for such a great story either. Maybe the novels... or they could do a movie with Miranda and TIM in the main roles (since they got the actors there)

Anyway, the more I think about it, the more I get the impression that it would have been better to wait a bit longer until going for the movie (until ME3 is finished). Then they could have come up with anew character and a new story (maybe even link it to an ME4 game) and base the whole thing on a consistent foundation with well planned out movie/game interaction.

But ... its all assumptions for now. Lets wait and see what they actually come up with first ... who knows, maybe it will be genius.

FAO Chris Priestly:

Hi Chris,

Of course as expected and naturally im a great fan of both DA and ME and love your site. Just got into it the last couple of weeks and read the number of qualms, etc with the Lotsb DLC, ending with you rightly shutting its forum thread down, which unfortunately i've seen the somewhat over zealous statements continued on Facebook. Still though, taking into consideration fans occasional bloated sense of entitlement i can sympathise with the frustration over the minimal release of information on Lotsb, especially on a DLC many are very passionate about, specifically the story surrounding Liara.

I can imagine and agree with the variety of reasons release info has been kept quiet no doubt, but with so much frustration currently being exhibited by fans to the point of having to shut down the forum concerning the subject, due to rudeness, and the continued angst, though unfair, being thrown at Bioware on Facebook, would it be possible to make a definitive statement just as to the reason release info has been kept so minimal.

I genuinely admire Bioware (Hell, better than Square Enix now imo) and your job Chris (though dont envy it!), though please could you shed any light on this subject other than the request to remain patient (which i sympathise with a slightly rude member who stated that it has been over a month since lotsb was announced) or that nothing can be said as of yet. Understand please that the frustration of not knowing even why release details are kept is very frustrating, especially when your serving in Afghanistan and (sad as it sounds!) aiming to arrange RNR for its release, heh.

Regardless Chris, you and the rest at Bioware are amazing and apart from my beautiful girlfriend of course first and foremost, you guys and gals have given me something to look forward to when i get back with the amazing games your creating. Cheers!

Daniel

I'm not gonna see this movie unless somebody in the community, and not some paid-to-say-so critic, says that its good and does the game series justice

After more than three months of being on this forum and as time is ticking for the Mass Effect series, this may be the final time of showing The List. The List is here to show ALL of the actors/actresses that were optioned as possible main/supporting/voice roles for the ME Movie from ONLY this website, along w/ some discussion of a possible ME 2 Cast and a backstory movie of ME (see pgs. 150-154). Now, it is a ridiculous, extensive, and unnecessary waste of time. However, this is also to prove the fact that we, as a whole, are not fully aware of the circumstances on this list. Yes - it is not a joke, yes - The List has terrible options, and yes - it is ridiculously long. If anyone feels like looking at The Refined List, feel free to look at pg. 156. Otherwise, The List will be a last push to get some actors, whoever they might be, into the casting list. Bring hope that Bioware will make the right choice. So, without further ado, here it is:

The List (part 1 – All ME 1 characters)

(Note: The list is in no particular order, only has names, & all the VA’s are included on the list – even additional roles for VA’s. Unfortunately, since the list has so many actors/actresses, there was no point to even use pictures for every one of them.)

This looks extremely promising. But, the movie will need an amazing cast. My personal choice for Commander Shepard is Christian Bale. For Ashley Williams, Jessica Biel. For Captain Anderson, Laurence Fishburne or Keith David. For Joker, Seth Green-cause honestly, can we see anyone else do his voice character as good and also pass to have brittle bone disease? All other actors and actresses should be casted in order to compliment these choices. Casting this movie should be approached with extreme care. Many game to movie conversions have weak casts. A great movie always has an exceptional cast. Both an excellent cast and a cast that compliments each other is crucial. It is one thing to make a cast "look" good, but it's another project to make it work together. You need extremely talented actors and actresses to make an incredible film. Some actors and actresses may look or sound the part, but their skills may not be suited for the character being played or for the movie itself. For this movie to have a positive mass effect on viewers, critics, and loyal game fans, it should have a remarkable cast and amazing production team.

I truly hope that the producers will not make this movie too gimmicky. Many game to movie conversions are gimmicky-like the producers focused more on the appeal of the game rather than the mass appeal of movie viewers and critics. There are several objectives that must be considered for this movie. Not everyone that goes to see movies have played these games. Many movie lovers do not play any games at all. We want to appeal to them equally if not more than the loyal game fans. Movies have their own character as well as games have their own character. Many aspects of the game need to remain in the game. Some aspects in movies need to remain in movies. The movie itself should have it's own identity. It does not have to based on any of the games' stories-it can have a story of it's own- the story in the movie can even take place after the trilogy is over. As long as it's an amazing movie like Iron Man 2, The Dark Knight, and Avatar-you'll have my appreciation.

I know that Shephard has a few default Actions/ Characteristics to co-exist with the overall Mass Effect Story. But I think his story should be Overlooked. There Are so many Mass Effect Stories that can made into Excellent movies. The Time Garrus Spent after Shephard died. The Illusive man's Prologue before founding Cerberus. Aria T' Loaks rise to power. The Rachni Wars. Prothean Extinction, The First Contact War. Expansion on the Gillian Grayson Ark. If done on Shephard I believe it would be a bust and would harm ME3 or just the Mass Efect Universe Immensely.

And I believe Micky Rourke is the Perfect Wrex. Or krogan in general.

I'll have to disagree with you on that. Regardless of what they do the story on, they can make it incredible with an amazing cast, production team, and director.  Also consider the idea of more than 1 movie.

In order for the movie to succeed:

a) A story different from the game - All the games to movies that stick too much with the game settings have failed.

B) A not too complex plot - After all, the general audience needs to understand the story in order for the movie to perform in boxoffice which for example, Final Fantasy failed badly.

c) Choose the *right* director, top-line directors do not equal to success.

The movie will definately ****** off some fans, so just get used to it.

I disagree on A...i think commander Shepard's story is alright for a movie. Remember, its a movie based on the story-it will not be identical to the game. So, it can still work nicely. Some of the other stories in the books are very complicated. And I do agree with you that the movie will ****** off many game fans. Indeed, it is true, u can't please everyone.

I don't care what anyone says, Dwayne Johnson NEEDS to be Shepard. He's got the body, acting talent, he starred in action movies before and he isn't some a pretty boy, the opposite type of guy who I picture when thinking of Shepard.

I personally can't recall many memorable aliens in Star Wars series or Star Trek series. As famous as these two big titles, most main characters are human or too much human-like.

Sorry. I just saw this...

... uhm. Yoda? Chewbacca? Really?

Anywho, best of the luck with the movie. Put that lame Avatar to shame on the silver screen.
