Oh well, I can only hope it won't happen, or it'll crash like all the other video game movies.

Why is everybody convinced that the movie will suck and you can't adapt a choice-based game into an inflexible medium? They did it with the novels, and I didn't see anyone complaining about those. Chances are, the movie wont follow the plot of the games. My only concern is that Drew Karpyshyn isn't involved with the writing - he's amazing.
While a movie about the first contact war would be cool, I think it would be a shame if the only characters in the film were human or turian. I'd much rather see krogans, hanar, drell, asari, quarians, salarians - the whole lot. Also, I want to see the Citadel, in all it's glory, on the big screen
Also please, use the default male Shepard. Don't use a female just for the sake of being different. I've played with a whole range of Shepards, but I can accept that the "classic" Shep is the iconic one that should represent the series.
agreed, especially about the default male shep

I have a bad feeling about this. If they set a young Shepard, there is a certaint threat of using one of the actors, who... well, you know sparkle instead of being a men. I can't take it.Hyper_gateway wrote...
Logically, if Bioware want to attract more people to play ME series, it is possible the movie will set foot at Shepard's young age (like first contact war, Elysium....). When the movie successfully grab viewers attention, here comes the special priced promotion of ME series game.

I'm not saying this is necessarily the movie BW want to make (maybe it is though), but this is what will get made in order to appeal to that magical 15-35yo male demographic the games/movie industry love so much.
It will probably be awful like every other videogame movie, and will pointlessly set a 'canon' default Shepard and story. IMO, this will only serve to isolate fans who like 'their' Shepard (or use a female Shep) and story and don't need to see it 'officially' contradicted, and I don't see people viewing a movie like I just described rushing out to buy ME for it's great storyline and dialogue - and those who buy it hoping for a balls-out alien explosionfest ala GOW will be sorely disappointed and tell all their little friends the game sucks.
I think that got a bit tl;dr, hard to tell on my tiny screen :S

I am really uneasy about a live-action movie starring a default commander Shepard. Trying to condense the story of 2 30hour+ games into a 2 hour movie with a decent budget is going to result in the ME storyline being dumbed down into a lowest-common denominator 'pew-pew-pew' ME universe in which Shepard is male, ruggedly handsome, soldier class (no biotics, mens get BIG HOLLYWOOD GUNS) & renegade (there'll be no paragon diplomatics in an action movie). I also predict at least one cheesy sex scene, probably non-alien, with the 'Miranda' of the movie, one alien nightclub scene, all salarians will be hyperactive comic relief characters, and one scene where Shepard has to make a 'tough' decision, possibly involving the fate of a crewmember as a misguided nod to the choices available in the game. It will also be cut to PG-13 - forget the mature ratings for the games.

Remember, the rights to mass effect were optioned, not mass effect 2. Seems to me that even if they had the rights to the second game, they would still split it into 2 movies, until mass effect 3 (the game) was released. Logically they make a trilogy, just like the game franchise, based on the game franchise. If it was done like this, then they wouldn't have to condense two or three games into a single movie. Obviously they would have to condense it a little, but it doesn't mean they have to dumb it down. Look at some of the recent trilogies...

If Joker is in the movie, he has to be played by Seth Green. Although I hope Bioware does'nt make this movie about Commander Shepard or a whole lot of people will get angry.
True, but you can say the samething about people who want to see Shepard, Tali, Garrus, Joker, Wrex, etc. on the big screen. Plus, if Shepard is put on the big screen, and it's done well then those people who don't want it to happen (they will most likely see it anyway) will be happy.

The only thing that matters is they get a good cast, a big financial backing, great director, producer, writer, etc. Hell, or just have the creators of the game write the script themselves. Just keep it away from Uwe Boll and Paul WS Anderson. That would already guarantee it will be at the least..decent. I still say Bioware should do a CG film. With all the voice actors from the game of course.

Bruce Wayne turned into a severe chain smoker, all the X-Men and even the less well known ones got pretty screwed over. Especially Deadpool. X-men was also cut down to the equivalent of a schoolyard fight compared to the comic's epic war resembling the scale of the Iliad.
Silent Hill was just horrible. Iron Man, while good, the character just became an egotistical ****. The original Tony had much more to him than the reimagining (if you don't know what I mean, read the old comics). And lastly, Spiderman, while the first was good, the second was almost as good, the third featured an emo **** who for some reason exhibited a modicum of chutzpah, far more than the average emo but still far less than even a little girl.

A trilogy could work but I'm not very hopeful. Videogame movies, unlike comic-book or novel adaptations historically do not make the big bucks at the box office, I'm not sure it would be considered worth the risk - if the first movie flopped, there'd be a 'heavy risk' the others wouldn't get made. I'm not particularly prissy about not seeing 'my' Shepard on screen, but I don't think it needs to be done - I really like the universe they've created and there is definite movie potential, but I'm not interested in seeing the game remade.
I admit I'm a little sticky about the idea of remaking stories from one visual medium into another (and with Girl with the Dragon Tattoo & Let the right one in getting pointless Hollywood remakes now, the whole subject gets my back up at the mo) so perhaps I'm being overly pessimistic. I still can't help thinking most of my above predictions will ring true though

i definitely agree with the idea that some people have had as to choosing some other story from the ME universe; things like the First Contact War, Saren and Anderson working together (from ME1 and Retribution), or the stories of Gillian Grayson and her father Paul (Ascension and Retribution). i mean most people like the movies Rain Man and I Am Sam, so having an Autistic protagonist would be someone that the audience could sympathize with. Hollywood also seems to be very interested in raising money for autism research and the like so i think that this would be a well supported story in the industry. Telling the story of the FCW would be a good alien first encounter story that would end very differently from the normal "we sent them packing and celebrated our ingenuity" (ex. Independence Day) or "we got lucky and survived" (ex. War of the Worlds) or "everything was peaceful and we were able to learn so much from each other" (ex. Star Trek: First Contact). It would also have a lot of action, plot, special effects while telling a vital story to the ME Universe. It would also create new interest in the ME games.
