I don't want to sound like I'm trash-talking your opinion but I firmly believe that if the First Contact War is mentioned at all (I don't believe it needs to be, and it will not be the main focus of a Mass Effect film as it is not a story of great enough bearing) it will be in a short introductory voice-over at the beginning of the film that could easily set up the back-story in a few minutes.
A prequel to something isn't exactly mainsteam is a terrible idea indeed.
I'll go on a limb and assume that *someone* involved in the film saw the LOTR flicks and will go for this safe and sane course of action.

The very contrasted lighting with all the lens flare, lot's of reflective surfaces. Put lot's of holograms and haptic adaptive interfaces in there and you are good to go.
Mind you,I am not talking about the movie itself, just the visual presentation.

In regards to the "Oh **** no more freedom of choice" argument. Why don't we look at it like this is the film makers' very own playthrough on mass effect and these are the decisions THEY made in the game? Almost as if they used a capture card while they were defeating Saren and the Geth or Harbinger and the Collectors.
Just a thought.
Most people aren't that reasonable. <_< Sad, isn't it?
TBH, Shepard is an awesome character for a roleplay. But he would be an absolutely AWFUL movie character. Some people see shepard as a pure paragon, some as a pure renegade, and most see him as somewhere in the middle. His thoughts, feelings, reasoning and relationships are all up to the person playing them, which is difficult to pull off on a movie screen and even less desireable. For movie characters, you need to establish a baseline for their reasoning, and whatever they choose is going to tick SOMEBODY off. It's one reason why superhero movies tend to start with the origin story: if you don't, then the fans can interpret whatever they want and pick the superhero version they like from whatever comic continuity they want.
Hell, i actually FORGOT there was a backstory besides Earthborn/Torfan until i looked mass effect up on the net. And then i read somewhere that Shepard was canonically a biotic, whereas i went full soldier.

I did every single side quest and the missions in under eight hours.DarkMarine117 wrote...
Second because if they did do the story in the game they would have to cut out a lot. There would be no really good way to cover all of the planets Shepard had to go to before he could go after Saren and fit it into a 3 hour film. The whole game took at least 10 hours and that is if you just did the main quest, of course you could cut out the time for the load screens and unnecessary conversation and fight. But I think it would still be to long.

or if not, release it after Mass Effect 3 and have it follow the trilogy.
or just make it four-movie series
so many possibilities. but I think Jennifer Hale would be a good choice because she does a good voiceover, and there isn't an overly large amount of intense action sequences, so she could handle it.

There's too many things that could upset people. First being the thing that what gender Shepard is, who he/she romanced if it even happened. The choices and so on.
This movie should be about something else, like many have said perhaps about the First Contact war.

It won't be about the First Contact War, for the same reason ME1 was not about the First Contact War.
