I am thinking, maybe a movie with 2 endings, and the audience chooses the ending. That would be appropriate. The technology already exists: http://www.audienceentertainment.com/

It would be cool if the two endings were shown at random so the movie wouldn't have to stop to wait for people to vote. It would completely derail the pacing and ruin the experience for a lot of people.

I love the idea of a movie but I hope it's something that doesn't involve commander Shepard, I mean both Male and Female Shepard are canon...and it would totally ruin the game for many people...I would love to see the First Contact War for example. Plus, the mass effect universe has room for millions of different stories...the novels, comics and the game are a fine example of that!

Although I'm curious, who do you think would play Shepard if the movie was about Commander Shepard?

A lot has been said in the past 6 months, since the release of this news, though I think John Woo should be involved in the making :) , Any way, I think now is the time for an official update from from BioWare, so we all know what has happened and in what direction the film is going. This will give us new things to talk about and not waist time and effort. Also BioWare will not have to sort through posts of relevance, as we will not be talking about things that have been rejected as well as knowing what has been decided to be included in the film and its direction!

I would like it if Bernnie Madoff plays the Shadow Broker. Maybe they can get him to do a scene or two on a special set they build for him in prison.

I absolutely agree that the movie should have NOTHING to do with any of the main characters from the game. The game characters develope to the players individual imagination and liking, similar to reading a book. Everyones interpritations and experiences with the characters are unique. Don't tarnish and make us question our character relationships and emotions. The Mass Effect universe is plenty large enough to make a fantastic story and epic action/adventure film without incorporating characters from the game.

This is fricking awesome. There have been a lot of terrible game to movie adaptations, but Mass Effect is already practically a movie. Besides, Bioware has yet to do me wrong. I'm not sure whether I want to see Sheppard or not. If the commander makes an appearance I suspect it will be based on the default male appearance. I prefer femshep myself but that would hardly ruin it for me. I also don't see any reason they couldn't use a bit of both paragon and renegade Shep as long as they avoid any of the extremes of either. No reason it can't he can't be both heroic and gritty without selling the Normandy to feed orphans or shooting innocent bystanders to make a point. On the whole I'd rather see them focus on a different part of the story like the first contact war or the plot of any of the books. Although I would be a little disappointed if we don't get to see some of my favorite Normandy crew. The thought of seeing live action Tali and Garrus is almost enough to send me into a fanboy nerd seizure. Time's a-wasting Bioware, give us details!

Do it in CGI nstead. Like the Final Fantasy movies. The technology is there. Plus... Joker is Joker, I don't want a Joker who doesn't look like Joker.

Who knows, might even be as cool as Jar Jar Binks.

Sorry, can't get excited about yet another lazy Hollywood ripoff of a great concept.

Edit: that's not to say StarWars is a great concept.

Wow this is incredible news - As a huge fan of the Mass Effect universe, I am not going to expect the movie to be anywhere near as awesome as the game - instead it would be a better idea to appreciate the movie for what it will be on its own presentation platform. Celluloid is very different from silicon after all.

A good choice for the role of director would be J J Abrams.
I think that Sam Worthington will make a fine Commander Sheppard .... but thats just my opinion...

JJ Abrams? Really? you want the Mass Effect movie to be filled with forced dialogue, horrible one-dimensional characterization and enough horrible lens glares to give a blind person an epileptic seizure? To each his own, I suppose...

Clearly you have never seen season 1 of Lost.

Well, if any smart director and game developer would do, don't make a movie based off the actual games story itself, but maybe an alternate view? or how about the past before shepard? who knows.

Resident Evil movies hardly follow the story line and look at the franchise! its a money maker.

About the movie,

I hope it's based on the books. Yes some of us believes in reading GOOD books. There is a ton you can do with the 3 books. It will also expose some of the illiterate or non patient types to a part of ME they wouldn't bother with otherwise. There is no point of doing the game story. We played and watched over 60+ hrs of that and seeing someone act it out may or may not be cool esp. if we dive into the choices.

The only way I can see it being cool is if you stick the option wheel up there and have a vote on which option "the main lead chooses before the movie comes out with little to no knowledge on what is happening and we watch the choices happen in the movie. It would add some immersion for those who voted before hand and make some wander wtf just happened and why they did that! (LOL random thought)

Back to the matter. Do it off the books or a original plot off the first contact war, or On Shepard and how he survived and became a war hero! Or do it off the Quarians and how they got exiled. Or do it on the Protheans and how they disappeared. Plenty of paths to choose on the story other than the game's plots.

Let me draw up some comparisons for those people who honestly think that the First Contact War would make a good setting for a film (or game or anything big budget for that matter):

Total casualties of FCW: approx 1900 (humans + turians)
Casualties from 1 week of gang violence on Omega (as noted from Cerberus Daily News): 1100
Casualties from Garvug Coup (Corporate armies vs Krogan squatters from C Daily News): well over 2000, involved heavy orbital bombardment of cities and door to door extermination of 150 buildings.

Total timeline of FCW: approximately 2 months
Timeline of Garvug coup: 9 months and counting

So in conclusion, a war being fought between random Krogan warlords and a bunch of hired corporate mercenaries has gone on longer and involved more deaths than the ENTIRE First Contact War.  How could anyone think that the FCW would make a good setting for ANY major project?

For God's sake, it wasn't even a war.  It was a skirmish.  It makes Granada look like a big deal.
