I have to say, I would love to see the movie carry out through the first game.  Not necessarily all three games.  I also would love for them to use Shepard, but then again perhaps they have another game set in the ME universe they want to introduce to the public.  So the movie will be a starter for the new franchise.  <shrug>

If they do go the way of making a movie about ME1 and following shepard.. I would love for it to be a CGI movie just like the final fantasy movie.  I thought the quality of that movie was outstanding, just that the story sucked.  I also really really enjoyed the mass effect 2 trailer where thane goes diving over those boxes.  If there were a ME movie done in that style/quality.. I'd definitely go see it.  Plus they could use the shepard that's on the box, and all the covers, as well as all the voice actors.

To the person that linked Lupo from Eureka.. she's a fabulous choice for Ashley if they go live action.  I love her in Eureka (such a quirky show it's fabulous) but I just wouldn't be happy with any shepard they got.  Jason Stathom is awesome and definitely that "military" type of person but he's not shepard.  Bruce Willis is too old, plus he doesn't fit shepard well for me.  I mean, all his run and gun parts are guys that get beat the <explicative> up.  Shepard doesn't.  Sure he takes his hits but he's never shot up, bleeding all over the place hanging on by a  thread.  I just don't see it.

I also think there's enough material to do a movie about the skilian blitz or the first contact war.  Sure they're limited in time frame, but movies can be about a day, a particular battle (see plenty of world war 2 movies).  I mean.. how long was Saving Private Ryan?

But what I'd love to see, is a CGI movie following the plot of the original Mass Effect.  Whether or not that's what we get.. Meh.  I'll see it either way.  Bioware has impressed me countless times in all their titles that I'll always give them my money first, and decide later if what they've made I like.  So far.. I've liked everything wholly.

Also.. bring back elevators with news reports and squad banter.  Thank you.

Yeah, maybe if Shep was like 50 years old.

no...

At least pick someone who FITS the role, no... the idea of Commander Shepard, Bruce and John are both far too old, and look nothing like Shepard.

I for one think Matthew Fox would be a great choice.  He hasn't been in many major movies that have brought him as much fame as his role as Jack in Lost.  Also, it doesn't hurt that he practically looks the part already and he doesn't seem to mind wearing crazy future suits.  (Speedracer)

My second choice would be Karl Urban.  He too at least resembles the default Shepard and not to mention he has a good list of movies under his belt:  LotR 2 & 3, Chronicles of Riddick, Star Trek, just to name a few.

Since this forum post has over 193 pages, I haven't read through them all, but here's my opinion about it anyway. :)

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to write a script where commander Shepard is a part of it at all - from the last few posts I gather that some people have quite different opinions on who should embody Shepard (as is probably always the case if characters from a book or game are turned into a movie version of themselves). My point is, however, many people play with custom made or female Shepards. Many people have a rather different idea on how the character should look like. Moreover, the story doesn't completely flesh out the character of Shepard as his character largely depends on what choice you make, and we all find ourselves extrapolating on him/her and fill in the gaps of knowledge with our own ideas. A movie actor will find it difficult to do that justice.

I think I would like the idea of the movie not taking place in the main storyline of the game. That it would rather complement the game, yet not overshadow it. Maybe take the approach of a side story with different characters as the main characters than Shepard. Something like the books or comics do. The idea of the Skyllian Blitz or the First Contact War as a main story line would be quite interesting indeed.

I know that this is probably not what's going to happen, but one can always hope, right?

Maybe it's just me then, but I can't see why they'd make a film with Shepard in. He/she is already awesome in the games, so why not try to expand the universe with brand-new characters?

Why would they make films about Harry Potter?  He was already awesome in the books, so why not try to expand that universe?

Because it wouldn't sell.  You don't buy the rights to an intellectual property and then not use the material from that intellectual property.

Ok, I've read a few of your posts by now... and in a totally non-confrontational way, I really want to ask why you're so dedicated to Shepard being the main character in the film, if it is made.

My modest perspective:
If the film follows the plot of either game, it will be a re-telling, and thus non-canon. Based on my experience with the Bioware team and their work, I believe that they would avoid doing a sloppy re-hash of the game, which is the central experience. Instead, I think they're far more likely, with good reason, to explore other events or characters in the world they've crafted. Why would Bioware, or the audience for that matter, want to retread the same old ground (especially when a movie version will inevitably be a more shallow experience than the original game) when they can instead offer a brand new experience and story, and explore the Mass Effect universe in a way that doesn't conflict with the individual gamer's version?

I'm totally open to your opinion, I really would just like to see you justify your disdain for any film not centered on Sheperd and the game's story. I'm respectfully challenging you to explain your position to me.

I agree there seems to be too much risk not to use Shepherd. It's similar to Lord Of The Rings. First off, not everyone who sees the film will have played the game. I'd suggest the majority who see it won't have played the game. There is always a tendency for those who are really involved to see their view as the majority view. Fact is - we play a game. Lot's more folks see movies. There appear to be two risks: (i) use Shep and risk putting off a number of dedicated ME-ers. Chances? Good? Impact - stuff all. If you don't like the movie, will you then refuse to buy ME3? Not all folks who are into ME will worry about what plot line is followed. I mean, the movie will just be a fiction - same as the game is. Some folks will gripe loudly, but bottom line is: total impact: sweet fanny adams. (ii) second risk is not to use shep. OK - so how does that link in with the game? Where's the flow on effect? Some folks will be ticked off that Shep wasn't used. So this options also disgruntles some. Ain't no winner here. So just comes downs to bums on seats. Shepherd has a profile. A profile is good for getting awareness of product. Just about evry ME-er will go see the movie no matter what option. Shep in movie has chance to flow on to Shep in game ie folks see movie, like, go buy game.

So, my take is they'll use Shep, and they'll keep largely to storyline. It just makes more economic sense. If the movie takes off, then there's more scope for moving away from that. But to do it first off? Nah, can't buy it. This is not necessarily the way I would want it, just arguing what I think is most likely. In the end, we the converted are the safest bet - so why pander, especially if there are risks (ie chance of fewer $s)?

Just my opinions, obviously.

cheers

I just hope they will a beneficial amount of budget to make the best film possible. One thing i wonder though, is there going to be a romance in it, and if so who would be the best character to use? Ashley; to carry the normal human-human relationship or Liara; expanding into the alien-human relationship which the writers could dramatise if written rightly.

The shadow broker's DLC tells me that Liara is the most canon romance and no, my favourite LI is Miranda in ME2 but I f***ked them both anyway

Shepard is iconic, without establishing films with Shepard there is no way for them to do a "side story/universe expansion" movie, it would FAIL, sorry, but Paragon/Soldier Shep is pretty much required.

Trilogy is also pretty much required.

The recent gamut of solid comic book to film conversions brings me hope that this might actually work. (Walking dead, Watchmen, Iron Man, etc, etc, etc.)

War.

Lots of uncovered story that fans would adore and non fans would enjoy, plus you could have cameos such as david anderson (an LT and N7 commando at the time), general williams, saren and his brother. and it would be an awesome place to start, you wouldnt have to explain the story so far i.e. codex pages because the humans of that time know about as much of the larger galactic community as we do

The FCW wasn't really a war though was it?  It was quickly escalating into one but the council stopped it from happening after the humans retook Shanxi.

So, can we expect some of the actors who gave actual voices really to play some of those characters?

Like Seth Green as Joker, and Yvonne Strahovski as Miranda? Could name a couple more, not all ofc, but this two and some others do look like their in game characters, so would be kinda cool to add them into the movie.

I know that this has been mentioned countless times through this forum, but I personally believe that the first movie should be based on the first book. Also, more elements from the First Contact War should be incorporated into the storyline.

However, there is one thing I don't want to happen to this movie if it is successful: They better not try to get the general public to view the movie by creating Team Anderson and Team Saren. That may work for the fans of sparkling vegetarian vampires and topless werewolves, but I will disown the movie if anything like that is used to promote it!

Bioware is not going to dumb down the game into a film version. They know that the appropriate target for a Mass Effect film is a niche market. There is no reason to re-hash the game for a film version in order to create a new audience, because the majority of the target audience has already played the games, or else doesn't care.

The target audience is composed of fans who know the universe already and don't want to see the same thing over again, or else teenage moviegoers who only want to see spaceships and violence, and for whom hours of conversations with crew members or unrelated missions would be insanely boring. Neither wants to see a film version of the game.

If they make a film, it's not going to be a "great movie" with a wide audience. It's going to be a video game movie aimed at male 14 to 30 year olds and people who have already played the games. Thus the story will and should be something other than what we've all done already in the game.

The most we can hope for in this movie is a well thought out, well written story with believable characters. A sloppy film translation of the original game will not offer that. It could only be a 2 hour CGI-filled trailer for a game we've already played. I certainly hope that Bioware will do something different, not only because it makes fiscal sense but also because it might actually be interesting.

Do you think it would be a better idea of following the books, instead of the game?

This would greatly limit the problems fans are complaining about; such as the appearance of Shepard and Paragon or Renegade.

Also, I would like to see characters such as Skarr, Kahlee Sanders, Pel, and Grayson incorporated into a visual experience.

No, Kate Beckinsale as Shepard please

Actually what would be truly splendid is if they made two movies side by side (less espensive than you might think as all sets would be shared) with a male Shepard (playing mostly Paragon) and a female Shepard (playing mostly Renegade)... that would be cool indeed.

Has anyone given any thought about having both a male and female Shepard at the same time (the Shepard twins), worked in another small sci fi franchise.
