@Crimmsonwind: true on the cost of animatronics. I also guess that a lot of the expertise has been lost since few studios do it nowadays. But to get Weta in to at least put the actors who portray aliens in latex suits... I think that'd be nice. They're all humanoid, shouldn't be too expensive.

Yeah, they could definitely do that. Some of the species might be a little hard to do, you'd need to rig up something for turian legs, and the salarians are a little scrawny, but with the right clothes you could hide that. Yeah, I think that's a good idea. That could work well.

I like the way you think.

Thank ye kindly. *tips hat*

Wow... possibilities for *other* ME films are coming to mind.

If the film is based on the first game, I think it could be easily streamlined.

Start with Eden Prime, which goes more or less like the game, sans dialogue with the smugglers, etc. Beacon knocks Shep out, he wakes up on the Citadel, talks to Udina, then the council, becomes a Specter, sent after Saren. Shep reveals his visions relating to the reapers, council doesn't by the threat, but finds the idea that he possesses Prothean knowledge intriguing, and assign a specialist, Liara, to learn everything she can about them. Before the Normandy leaves, Garrus, the cop who's been investigating Saren meets Shep and forces his way into the crew. The Normandy then heads off to find Saren.

Cut Feros, Therum, and use Noveria as the place where Shep and crew almost catch Saren, who narrowly escapes. Also, Wrex is introduced, as mercenary out for Saren after being screwed over during a job, and joins Shep due to their common goals. Noveria leads to Virmire, which goes like the game, just shortened. Council calls Shep back, tries to stop him from chasing Saren into the Terminous Systems, Udina smugly supports them. Anderson tells Shep his plan to spring him, pops Udina, Shep goes to Illos. Illos could be one big chase sequence through Prothean ruins, with Saren again getting away through the conduit, which promptly shuts down. Que Sheps heroic despair. Vigil pops up, giving exposition on the reapers, uses the last of its power to reactivate the conduit. Shep goes through it, chases Saren, and has his big showdown while the rest of the crew hold of geth or something. Shep kills Saren, turns to leave, Saren jumps up in his skeletal cyborg form, only to be dropped by Garrus or Wrex, doesn't really matter.

While all this happens we have the space battle between the Citadel and Sovereign's geth fleet. Again, this happens more or less like the game, ending with a large chunk of Sovereign "killing" Shep, who miraculously reappears as the hero theme crescendos. End on a montage of the aftermath of the battle, with a narration talking about the threat of the reapers, revealing the narration being a fancy holo-dossier being read by the illusive man, with the final shot of the film being IM in silhouette with his dwarf star behind him. Cut to black and roll credits.

Sprinkle in a love triangle, some gunfights, and a load of decent cg, and you have the makings of a summer blockbuster.

Damn, look at all those words.

Aliens

would be executed through special effects and extras, but voiced by  their
normal voice actors.

And seriously people, stop suggesting they
cast Mark Vanderloo with a Mark Meer voiceover, that would look
idiotic.  I'd take acting ability over looking exactly like the
character any day.

Those are some really good suggestions - it's going to be very exciting to see who ends up getting the roles. This is going to be a quality film, I'm sure it'll put all over "Video Game Movies" to shame.

IDK, this could be a good comedy, maybe something Monty Python style. Such things are so rare these days...

It is a myth that animation is expensive. It's not anymore - and it will certainly be cheaper once this movie is released.

Mo-Cap the aliens and Green Screen the scenery.

I like the idea of a movie in theory, but I personally think a television series would have worked much better. The mass effect universe is so vast and rich that there is no way to compound all that in a 2-3 hour movie. But, this is interesting news and I'm hoping for the best.

If only Jean Reno was a little thinner... I couldn't help but see 'Leon' reflected a little in Thane.

movie based on a RPG (decisions!) game... right... let me think..

nope. its still an idiotic idea.

they have so many chances to develop the system 'based on a game'. Now after PoP, they want to experiment on ME? i disagree. maybe after years when everything willl be more developed we can go for game-movies. i want to hope that its going to be fine, but still.. im unsure about it.

Mass effect the movie, woah it sounds nice really... but how they are going to make it? use some canon story and shorten everything to 3 hours?

I would prefer to see KotOR film instead of ME. Its more simple without all the 'choices' compared to mass effect.

Well, we can always hope that the story will have nothing to do with the games' story (just like all other ME media, Revelation, Ascension, Retribution, Redemption, Galaxy) and that it will be set before, between or after the games

Well if they're asking us to discuss who we think should play Shepard, there's a chance that we probably will be dealing with a Shepard-centric story, which means none of those. :/

Mass Effect is better than Halo, but I would rather the Halo film. Why? It won't alienate players who don't play as the default - the Chief cannot be anyone else - and it would be made by the same people as District 9. Plus, given the weakness of the Halo universe, there's a lot more potential of expansion.

Oh, and the Halo film isn't necessarily cancelled by the way.

At least Bioware is helping out, it isnt a complete rip-off like other video game movies. Though I think if it does follow Shepard we should be able to vote on like male/female or story plots and characters that make it in.

I look forward to a ME movie but hope to god that it is not the shep story, it should instead focus on something like the rachni wars, krogan uprising, or first contact wars.

Uh, I was talking about her avatar. But yes, I do agree that a Master Chief-based Halo film would be more accesible to people than a Mass Effect movie.

But Mass Effect had better storytelling, IMO.
