Take M.E. book 1 - Make a movie.
Take M.E. book 2 - Make another movie.
Take M.E. bool 3 - Third one.
Wait the book 4 and make a movie to.
Don't touch the history, don't mess with the history, Just take the actors, make them read the books, play the games as well as the writers of the movie should do.
And then... ACTION!

You are right, packing over 12 characters into one and a half hour movie ain't gonna work.
There should be seriously trimmed cast. Or else it will be shallow and just another fail.
My altered cast list (based on the other guys list) has a max of 13 roles, only one of which is a starring role (Shepard), four to six supporting roles (depending on how heavily included the B-listers are: Liara, Garrus, Tali, Ashley, Kaiden, Wrex--two of which will probably be CGI'ed anyway), and smaller supporting roles for characters like Joker, Captain Anderson, etc. A two and a half hour movie could easily handle the plot and character elements required.
Matthew Fox as Commander Shepard
Zachary Levi as Kaiden Alenko
Ron Perlman as Urdnot Wrex (VO)
Emily Blunt as Ashley Williams
????? as Garrus Vakarian (VO - doesn't need to be a big name)
????? as Tali Zorah nar Rayya (VO - doesn't need to be a big name)
Liv Tyler as Liara T’Soni
Cate Blanchett as Matriarch Benezia
Hugo Weaving as Saren Arterius (VO)
Helen Mirren as Doctor Chakwas
Seth Green as Joker
Keith David as Captain Anderson
????? as Ambassador Udina

Why male? If Shep is female, there is no male lead for the trilogy; you have Kaiden for the first one and likely the big tragic casualty (since he'd barely show up for pt2 and lose story weight with a male Shep), and you've got Jacob for pt2, and he's basically Miranda's sidekick. There are a ton of strong female leads with Liara potentially playing large roles in all three films, Ashley in the first one, both Miranda and Jack in the second, and plenty strong supporting roles.
Why spacer soul survivor? It makes the most narrative sense that humanity and the Council would choose someone familiar with space, with aliens, and a military pedigree (admiral mom) to take this kind of diplomatic position. The soul survivor origin sets up a natural conflict with the Illusive Man and Cerberus without having to spend a lot of exposition time on what's so bad about Cerberus. Plus, it's personal to Shep and you get a chance to show the giant space worms in a quick action scene.
Why love triangle? It's always more interesting. :-) Plus, you get to get into the Asari and thereby make a stronger connection to all those crazy aliens in the Mass Effect universe.
And I'm gonna say it needs an R rating just like the game should just commit to, and like the best gritty sci-fi out there. In terms of tone, don't think Star Wars. Think Alien, Pandorum, Riddick, Starship Troopers, Event Horizon. And Legendary excels in R rated genre films.

Wether we can or we can't it looks like we're going to wait for a loooooong time, mate.
...if they're still actually making a film.

sheepard also need to follow the path of the paragon because i think no one can condem and destroy an entire race (even the rachine) or sacrifice the council which would also be powerful allies it would be sacrefing ones humainty.
as for if shepard is male or female i would go male.
if he sleep with someone i don't know because how those people end up in the second one liara obsess with killing the shadow boker and ashley i feel is to alien hating and unwilling to listen or even support his disesions.
as for who shepard saves in on vermire i think ashley because i had a stronger conection to her than kaldian
shepard i think need to be a colonist and a war hero because if he was a colonist then he would have to learn to forgive the baltarens for what they did. a war hero because i don't see how andersion undina and the other humans could vote for the other two.
as for who joins the council i would go anderson simple because a soldier would be a better leader for when the reapers come
i have play the game so many times that it would be important to save than destory everthing.
those are my personial throughts

Any TRUE mass effect fan would agree!!!!!
All of this publicity & cash has obviously had a mass idiot effect on Bioware,Drew Karpyshyn & Casey hudson!!! This incomeing cancer on the series known as"The mass effect movie"
is the single worst business move of these regular sellouts carees.Realy!!! If they release
This turkey before or to soon after ME3 it will kill the series and their popularity among true fans entirly (The ones who made them rich & famous in the first place...your welcome from all of us).
I mean Why doesnt Drew Karpyshyn step up & try to save what hes created?????!!!!!!!!!!
Or is he realy that desperate for income right now???(still a great auther though)
As for my fanship i'll be here.....waiting...watching....commenting..I'll be that beacon of
hope that says someone still cares about integraty in story telling.
As for Drew.....Why have you forsaken me?.....why?
Still looking forward to Mass Effect 3 though.....

Another thing that bothers me about it is when was the last time you saw a great movie based on a video game? Mass Effect is a movie in itself...the player's own movie. I don't really see any reason why they would need to make a movie out of it unless they wanted to make money. Think of several examples of movies based on video games. Here are some well known examples: Silent Hill, Bloodrayne, Lara Croft/Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia, Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil, Mortal Combat, Hitman...Those are just the well known ones.
With the exception of Silent Hill, I can honestly say I didn't care for any of those movies. Sure Tomb Raider had Angelina Jolie, but it really didn't do anything for me. Prince of Persia was nothing like the game, and I hate those people for making me spend money to sit through that crap. Live action movies based on video games just don't dazzle people...well at least not in the same sense the game would. Especially a game like Mass Effect where you get to decide how everything turns out in the game. The only good thing about making a movie of it is they would broaden the Mass Effect fan base. Though if they ruin it, then they also ruin the chance of those people giving the game a chance.
I'm not saying it's impossible to pull off, but it would be extremely hard to keep it true to the story if hollywood got their nasty hands all over it. Maybe if they do it on the First Contact War, or something that isn't about Shepard specifically they might be able to do it. Although, I love Bioware to death, and I'll support them no matter what they decide to do.

Look at all the other expanded universe content - the books, the graphic novels etc. Theyre each fantastic stories set in the mass effect universe and dont screw up continuity as they have nothing to do with shepard or our decisions. I see no reason why bioware would suddenly decide to do a rehash of something theyve already done, it would be a complete waste of time for them and legendary. They know who their fan base is. Theyre making it for us.
Stop whining. It's going to be awesome.
