Also, if they do make this movie, *which I really hope they don't*, it must have;
Yvonne Strahovski
Martin Sheen
Joshua Gomez as Joker of course!
Keith David, anderson?
for Shepard, yeah maybe that Aaron ackhart guy.

If this is happening, Zack Snyder has GOT to direct!

He's a great director, and making a movie that looks like a videogame that actually was a videogame seems like something he'd be amazing at.

Your point about it being a space epic: You're totally right. There is that, and I was overlooking it. I think, though, that there is still some truth to the idea that Shepard and his/her team are attempting the impossible. That's an integral part of the space epic flair. :)

True, the difficulty makes it that much more interesting. I'm glad we agree.

KieraShepard wrote...

For me, the "extra layer" is just that it creates an underlying conflict, that femshep had to overcome some gender prejudices to be the best of the best. It's a small layer, but it's there, for me at least.

The way I see it, credit's due where credit is earned. It doesn't matter what skin color or gender someone is, as long as they get the job done better than anyone else. If there was a Female athlete who could play a sport better than a guy then she should be allowed to compete (and it has been tried before). And I'm glad they added the FemShep option to the games because I know a lot of people who play her for one reason or another, not to mention the great voice work by Jennifer Hale.

KieraShepard wrote...

Accuracy being optional...well...it sort of is in fiction like this. Accuracy provides immersion, and it's important, but not every detail has to be exact. I said that to counter the claim that femshep isn't canon because females aren't in the special forces. In the mass effect world, they can be, plain and simple. Maybe their suits amplify physical strength, who knows? But just like science, military technology, methods, and structure changes all the time. Not too long ago, we were fighting on horseback and women were at home making pie. :D Mass Effect is in 2183. A lot can change, including gender roles.

So yeah, my personal favorite is still femshep. Maleshep feels a little cliche to me, and I guess I like the idea that gender roles could have changed so drastically by 2183. I am in no way bashing maleshep, who is still quite badass. :)

That's what I like about the game customization mechanics BioWare has. For me, Shep is a Spacer/War Hero who tries to unite the mostly squabbling races against the biggest threat to existence. For others, he's a survivalist who takes on the galaxy all by himself. Though I personally don't care much for gender roles, as I think it's important to have an open mind... even though the world needs more pie!... having a FemShep in film would be catering to different, and smaller, crowd than male Shep. And I doubt anyone associated with the film wants a smaller audience.

* On a side note, I wish more people had your attitude when responding on forum boards (especially in MMO's). I've seen lots of flame-wars start over less.

Truth. The people making this want to make money above all. They'll do what they have to do to draw the largest audience(and there's nothing wrong with that!). If that means making Shepard a guy that's fine with me.
I'm a girl, I love my FemShep and Jennifer Hale, and I don't want a Female Shepard in the movie UNLESS they totally ignore the fact that she's a a girl like they do in the games. I hate feminist drama crap. I don't care if Shepard is a girl or a guy in the movie, just so s/he is still awesome!

I refer everyone to the Genetics Entry in the Codex. it is implicit that that helped on the women special forces entry thing.
That, and a biotic FemShep trumps Soldier MaleShep, simply because the physical reasons for no women in Special Forces is worked around. 'Oh, this weighs a ton? no problemo, I'll just LEVITATE it.'

and WAAAY too many action movies are gung ho males with rubbish 'Black Widow' style female assassins that like lycra.

And Feena, I llike drama. and I'm a guy. not sure how you mean 'feminist' drama, so yeah.
The bit of the film "The Expendables" that I liked, for instead, was the part where with Jason Statham and Charisma Carpenters' characters. (Partially because I really liked the fact that Cordelia Chase, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, probably had the most character development in the history of TV. I mean, shallow cheerleader to awesome asskicking fashionista with a huge case of hidden depths syndrome? and it wasn't a sudden transform, like Buffy's was in the early 90s film.
Then she got jossed with being 'ascended' and like Daniel Jackson, couldn't do jack sh*t.)

-

on the idea of a prequel... I'm thinking of a mix of the backgrounds. Parents in the alliance, but she grew up on earth, at first, then on mindoir when those raising her lived there. So there's both the 'lost my family' and a new, 'my parents abandoned me' thing in her background.
Then they can make her a Paragade, through Elysium - yay hero thing confidence boost, she goes for Special Forces training. Later, Akuze 'oh ****', and later she's in a emotional rut when it's time for Torfan.

I'm writing a fanfic where that's the case for Jennifer Shepard. A really huge hate-on for Batarians, as you can imagine. Imagine X57 with that. :D and she hates thresher maws, like, vein-popping levels.
And having a squad like Kaidan, Ash, Liara, Tali, Garrus, and Wrex, helps her get the balance of not being ruthless 24-7.

But so long as He, or She, punches that damn reporter, It'll be a win for me.

what needs to be remembered, is that catering to a new crowd is an automatic fail. Hence Stargate Universes's downfall - they catered it to non-scifi fans, who see the 'stargate' bit, and 'universe' and automatically think, 'scifi, ugh, I wonder if CSI is on tonight.'

Catering to the fanbase, but not making it closed to only the fanbase, is what's important. Easy to pick up the story, but not at the cost of, you know, a good, immersive story.

I'm pretty sure Feena's talking about 'feminist' drama where the story focuses on Shep's gender instead of only on the story. Sure it's good to distinguish any character's gender for more realism, but to add those dramatic moments of "can I do this because I'm _" with violins queued in the background cheapens to story for some (if not most) people.

I don't really get what you're saying here Alex. Having a FemShep would in essence be catering to a new crowd, as none can solidly argue that roles like this wouldn't/haven't normally been played by a guy, so we're in agreement at first. Then you mention the fanbase to support having a FemShep? Everyone here in the forums is the 'fanbase,' and thankfully the 'fanbase' doesn't always agree. (I say thankfully because I believe discussion is a good way of exploring new possibilities.)

To be honest I think I'm going to be disappointed. Two main reasons (I'm sure in the last 200 pages they've been gone over in one form or another, multiple times, but here it is anyway)
1) Mass Effect 1&2 are just too epic...that is a really high thing to even attempt to reach and Hollywood has been so unimpressive especially with ports that I don't even watch movies any more. I'm not holding my breath, though I will likely see it, I might be surprised.
2) The game is an RPG, it allows a lot of customization. I played a black FemShep that was an infiltrator, colonist, war hero, saved the rachni, got with Liara, killed Kaiden, kept Wrex alive, reprogrammed the heretic geth, and generally was a damn good paragon with a few bad ass moments. Movies are so..static. I first played Mass Effect 1 on the Xbox, then got ME2 for PC. I was bothered so much by the default choices that I had to buy ME1 off steam just so I could enjoy ME2. If it takes the default storyline for ME1 that you got in ME2 and has male Shepard, it will be nearly unendurable for me. I say FemShep because that's how I played the games, I find switching to DudeShep jarring, just as I'm sure people who played it the other way would find FemShep odd.

Aww man that movie looked amazing.
How about a soundtrack that good? I'm not sure I want that style for ME, but man I love listening to the TRON music. Music takes things that extra step. So far the games have had amazing soundtracks, I hope the movie does as well.

Probably. Not going to buy that 'pro' thing on IMDB just to get 'pro-only' content and find that it's in limbo, and go, 'what a waste of my bucks'.

Yeah its kind of a no brainer that if Joker is in the movie, he is played by Seth Green.

So, do we have any news about the movie recently?
Is it dead in the water like the Halo movie?

You're probably right because it's safer for the producers, but I think a female shep would make for a more interesting movie.  Two candidates that come to mind off the bat (based roughly on the look of the default femshep):  Hillary Swank, or Annie Wershing (24 TV series).  Both can act and resemble the look I think Bioware was going for based on the game-cute with a touch of tomboy/butch.

Having said this, I agree with others who have recommended leaving Shep out of the first movie and feature the First Contact War.  This will provide an important foundation for gameplayers and non-game players alike who have not read the novels or comics.

Though you make good points here, the movie will need to draw a lot of non-game players to produce enough revenue to be considered a success.  Thus, the choices you and I valued as game players will be irrelevant to them.  For me, so long as the story is solid and entertaining, I think I would still enjoy it.  On a related note, I think it would be wise to start with the First Contact War if for no other reason to provide a fresh story for gamers (like me) who have not read the novels or comics (if any) that cover this period.

With regard to point 1,  I think ME would work better as a TV series than a movie because the former can provide the time necessary to examine the ME universe and characters in depth.  Further, while I'll admit I'm not an expert on such matters, I would think that one season of TV would cost far less to produce than a major motion picture.  One important caveat about a TV series is that no OTA network should get it.  Their decision makers simply cannot be trusted with a product as impressive as ME.  Think about it.  With the exception of Fringe on Fox, when was the last time a quality sci-fi series aired on a legacy network?  I think there's more than one right answer here but my candidates would be (from best to worst): 1-FX (they are on a roll right now with several good shows), 2-Syfy (Logically should be #1, but my concern is that they are the hosts of Ice Spiders, Dinocroc, and the WWE), AMC-(plenty of quality originals, but sci-fi may be a bit out of step for them).  HBO would do a good job with ME as well, but I don't like the idea of viewers having to purchase a premium cable/sat channel to see it.  There's also one of out the box idea as well:  Netflix streaming.  Netflix has started to try and purchase original programming. http://blog.netflix....e-of-cards.html
