If possible, be open to having Shepard being played by Will Smith or a half Black Half White actor just to add variety the game doesn't have.
How about a mixed female? That would be unique.
The game let's you play as any race you want, although I guess the (male)voice leaves something to be desired.

That really goes to show how confident you are about your own preferences.

Now, while I like Urban (quite good in The Bourne Supremacy and he makes a superb Dr McCoy in ST) when I think Urban in the context of this game (scifi) I keep thinking about the movie "Doom".
Ugh. "Doom". SUCKASS MOVIE.
It's just the residue from that suck movie that Urban starred in that kinda poisons him in my mind for THIS role. I'd like some sign that the movie will be well funded and taken seriously rather than pooped out like "Doom" was. It should receive LoTR funding/support, not B-movie funding.
Although, I like him more than Matthew Shepard for the role (though I like Matthew Shepard in general).

I actually thought the DOOM movie was good, certainly entertaining, and Urban actually saved the film from "suckass-ness" you gotta admit, the FPS part was awesome, and imho the whole film shoulda been done that way, apart from "cutscenes" where you actually see Duane.
A complete FPS movie then would have been an awesome innovation

I think that the Mass Effect movie should be set around the First Contact War and the Battle of Shanxi. I would pick Mel Gibson to play General Williams (Mel is an **** but he really does know how to play the compassionate Commanding Officer-Braveheart, We Were Soldiers, The Patriot) and Eric Bana to play a Young Illusive Man, he has the right kind of Gravitas.
oh i'm liking the whole young illusive man thing... how young? cause i was thinking of cillian murphy
.. but mel gibson does make a mean SOB when it comes to being a commander in wooping tail.

its not about shep and crew, its about the Contact War, which gies them much more artistic freedom and not nearly as high expectations and critisim from the game fanatics. ME is also a space opera. those are generaally amazing games but bad movies =/
Eh? The entire Star Wars saga is a space opera. Now, granted, after the first three they became suckoidal but still, the movie was all space opera. Star Trek is all space opera. Both predate any real video games of note.
In any case, by the time the movie is out most people will not be playing ME games anymore so worrying that it will not validate your particular likes/dislikes in how YOU played it is fairly silly.
It cannot go into First Contact Wars (a copy of Babylon 5, by the way) because no one but the actual game players, and in particular, the book readers (a minority of the minority of people) would even have a clue what it was all about. They are not aiming for some small cult following, they are aiming big (one would hope - aiming small means crap movie). People who never played the game or ever even looked at the books or art for the game can understand the ME trilogy. It has a beginning, middle, end and is entirely self-contained. Going into side story or backstory as the prime focus of the movie would be a disaster economically. Sure, hardcore fanboys would love it but that would add up to a few thousand dollars in receipts. That equals failure.

Would you rather see real life actors or cutting edge anime with game voices
I would rather there be no movie rather than anime. Just me.
I can't see why the voice actors couldn't play characters like Tali, Wrex and Garrus; Tali wears a full body suit, and Wrex and Garrus are so far from looking human (and they're bigger, as well), it doesn't matter who plays them. I suppose it may be easier to get lookalike actors with similar voices for the humans, as their voices are less unique than the alien characters.

Who is Matthew Shepard? All I saw on Google was a about a gay guy who was raped and murdered.
