Mass Effect Movie announced!

I even caught myself hoping for some things to work out, given the production crew involved. They wouldn't let it suck, right?
But however will they handle all the branching story choices? Who lives, who dies, who Shepard chooses amidst the Dawson's Creek romantic politics aboard the Normandy (female Shep + Joker = WIN) . . . These are problems a film can't solve. The medium simply isn't suited and this is just a bad idea, even if it turns out to be otherwise redeemable. 300, Dark Knight, Iron Man, and Watchmen worked pretty well, but none of these were ever RPGs beforehand.
What is this compulsion with modern storytelling that EVERYTHING should be a movie? Every author trying to have his manuscript optioned by a studio, every game developer pushing for an adaptation? Some things are only ideal in their native medium.
"I liked Mass Effect when she was beautiful and quiet. Now she's got this thing I don't want to talk about.
It's like franchise cancer."

I suppose it was inevitable this thing be greed-lit (sic). I wish I were more optimistic, but with the way the second game turned out, having nearly all of its RPG elements contritely shorn away to please the action crowd, I feel it's rational to expect the worst.

And no PS3 Mass Effect games... don't screw us over with that.
If it goes to PS3 that means more sales, which means more profit and will likely mean more money can go into the next ME products. And Ps3 users (like myself) are happy.
Win win situation.

I'm sure there are other examples, but these are the ones I know best.
No matter how fertile a property is, studios will always make the safe choice and go with the core characters, origin stories and integrity be damned.
A sequel to the third game would be interesting, but even that would have to acknowledge at some point who lived or died or whatever in one of the erstwhile choice-based stories, albeit in a peripheral sense.
I'd really love to be wrong about this film being a bad idea, but . . .
Time will tell, I guess.

Who said this was going to be treated as canon? Why all these assumptions when we don't know squat?MercilessToaster wrote...

You don't own Dragon Age, Chris?Chris Priestly wrote...
I am very pleased this morning to announce that there will be a Mass Effect movie made by the fine folks at Legenday Pictures! I know there has been a lot of speculation amongst our fans ever since Mass Effect 1 came out as to whether or not there would be a movie, who should star in it, who would direct, would there be a Wrex sized bucket of popcorn, etc and I can now reveal that, yes, there will be a movie (popcorn deal is still unconfirmed.
Legendary Pictures, the studio behind great films such as The Dark Knight, Watchmen, The Hangover and 300 have picked up the rights to make Mass Effect. Legendary Pictures will produce with Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni along with Avi Arad (who has been behind great films like Iron Man, X-Men and Spider-Man). From BioWare Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuck and Casey Hudson will serve as executive producers.
"At BioWare, we’ve always thought of Mass Effect as having the depth, emotion and plot twists perfectly suited for an adaptation to a motion picture,” said Casey Hudson, executive producer of the Mass Effect series. “With Avi Arad and Legendary attached, we believe that the Mass Effect movie will be an extraordinary entertainment event that realizes our vision for the franchise and thrills fans.”
I am super psyched for this and look forward to seeing the Mass Effect movie take shape.
Is it too early to buy tickets?
On topic: a-w-e-s-o-m-e news!
Way to go, Bio!
