As someone else just confirmed, the movie has been confirmed to be at SDCC.

I hope it's not just an adaptation of the games. I'd still watch it if it's just an adaptation of Mass Effect 1, but I'd be skeptical of the quality of it. A neat idea to meld the game and movie together and still make it audience-friendly is to basically set it as a prequel to Mass Effect, and set it during or around the First Contact War. Perhaps the Alliance finds some Reaper technology and it backfires horribly. The Reapers try and set the Humans against each other by attempting to indoctrinate groups of people in order to eliminate them from the galactic equation. Hey, the Reapers tried a similar thing with the Rachni Wars, so it isn't completely out of the question.

I don't know, though. The movie seems to have some good talent behind it, so I'm hopeful.

The thing about the ME movie being having shepard in it produces several problems
1. What is Shepards gender
2. What choices did shepard make e.g. DA, Rachni
3. Did shepard romance anyone
4. Fitting all the events of a 50+ hour game into a two hour film
5. People who don't know anything about ME will think that this shepard is canon
6. Not everyone will like the shepard portrayed

So a better option is to make a Mass Effect movie out side the Shepard story since it will not conflict with canon and add to the universe I think the movie should be about David Anderson before he became a captain

I have no problem with the movie being the same story as ME1. I have multiple Shepards, across both genders, who have done pretty much anything. Seeing one set of choices in film doesn't detract from my experience at all. In fact, I'd prefer it, because seeing it for the first time would be the first time I've been surprised by ME in years. I know what choices I'm going to make going into the game - in a movie I have no control over? Wonder what he'll do!

I have to agree with this. My gameplay tends to be horribly linear, and it doesn't help that I know what's going to happen pretty much before I make each choice. I think that seeing the film and what choices Shepard will make there might provide some feeling of supsense, or what have you, something that's been lacking in my play sessions for quite some time.

Finally! After 14 months of deliberation over this movie, it's finally starting to shed light. Hope this was worth all of our expectations!

I see the following as potential problematic areas if the movie is based on FCW:

1 - Will the Turians communicate in their native language or in English?
a - If in English, how did we get a translator?  How easily can the translator be adapted to new races?
b - If in the native language, the problem of Turian being depicted as in a cruel, animal-like way could arise.
c - As a corollary, how did the Citadel council negotiate peace between the humans and the turians?
2 - Will the Evolution comic be related to the movie storyline or discarded?
3 - The distribution of running time between the actual war itself and establishing the universe for audiences unfamiliar with the series.
4 - Continuity errors, even though it will likely be minimized due to Casey Hudson being executive producer.
5 - The risk of it ending up as a stereotypical and cliche humans meet aliens first contact scenario.
6 - Biotics will be more difficult to explain if for instance a Turian cabal force is involved in the battle.
7 - Will the Reapers be involved in any way in the storyline?  See #2.
8 - How much was humanity (in terms of military, technology, culture, politics etc.) changed due to the war and subsequent integration into the galactic community?

BTW, I would rather see a FCW movie than one based on the storyline of the games.

www.dailyintersect.com/  Has some interesting views on actors who would best suite these roles in the ME movie? Good or bad?

Events of the first game. FCW would be a crushing bore. A nice two-hour space opera, covering the four major plot points -- Eden Prime/the Citadel, Noveria, Virmire, and Ilos -- it'd be tight, but it could be done. Introducing the relevant people might be difficult -- Wrex, Tali, and Garrus are recruited on the fly, somewhat -- but Liara's recruitment is relevant to the plot by way of her mother.

I think it could be done. I just hope that that if it is done, it's not some horrible stitched-together Frankenstein's monster, like some films these days. And that no characters undergo serious Personality overhauls to make them more 'marketable.'

I've seen this kind of adventure before (Farscape), and I know it works. I just have to hope that the people responsible for this know it, too.

Damn, this could be so cool!

Too bag "cannon" Shepard is not a lot like mine - to represent my Shepard we'd need Samuel L. Jackson :)

This is a terrible idea... if they had just done it all in CG using motion capture and used the original voice actors, then it would be fine. But no, they had to go and cast a whole load of new people to destroy the personalities of the characters we are already used to.

I believe this would only work as a prequel. When I first heard about the movie I was pretty disappointed, but once I heard the prequel idea...well, it might actually work out!

Please, i hope it is set prior to Mass Effect 1. Maybe during the First Contact War or David Anderson: The Early Years. Maybe an adaptation of the 1st book or the comic with The Illusive Man or Saren's backstory. This movie could have cameos from Asari that we've met in the games as they live 100s of yrs. Hopefully it wont be a CGI-fest in terms of characters as cosplayers have revealed it is possible to make Krogan and Turians using practical effects. There's lots of possibilities to do this right with cool nods to the fans of the games that dont call attention to themselves so ppl who've never played the games can enjoy the movie.

nicely pointed out, I too would like a FCW movie rather than based on the games. I'd like the movie to be considered canon and not contradict anyones experience of the game.

I wish I could feel excited about this... but I just can't because Mass Effect is not a good movie story. If they are going to adapt, a better media form would be television because then you can explore the themes of the games more deeply. I predict this will just end up as another failure (although perhaps better than some)

I am getting pissedd off by this negative people here. Please get a life.

If you call yourself a ME Fan, then you cant be against a movie. ME is not only about games, its about a complete new universe which can be used to tell stories.

Well, I hope that if it would represent the events of the first game, people would be more drawn to actually play it. And perhaps, they could have Shepard make new choices which don't exist in the game, so it wouldn't be either this or that.
But imagine... renegade shepard:
Just replace "klingon" with "batarian" and "photons" with "thanix cannon" XD

they should base the movies off the novels because there r too many variables to base it off the game but the prequel idea is also very good no matter what im seeing this movie the day it comes out and im going to camp out like a week before it comes out :D

I don't get why people can even discuss if the movie will be about Shepard.
Here are some simple facts why it isn't, and never will be:
- 1. The game is about YOUR Shepard, and YOUR choices. Bioware always said that. Seeing a guy that pretends to play Shepard will just annoy allot of fans, and it takes away from the illusion that the character in the movie could actually be real person.
- 2. Every other form of media/entertainment, like the books and comics about Mass Effect, did not include Shepard, Even if they spoke of him/her in the dialog, it was pretty vague, leaving you in the illusion that they where indeed talking about the Shepard you currently had in mind.
- 3. Making a movie about a story you could actually play is just movie-suicide. It never worked, and it will never work. Think about all the movie-adaptations that failed.
- 4. Making the movie about someone else, and a different "incident" will make this movie more accessible for people who just want to see a movie and don't know bat-sh*t about the Mass Effect universe. (And if they like it, they might possibly gain allot of new fans.)

And with that, First Contact War is the best possible choice to make an introduction to the ME-Universe without ruining the main-plot and, most important, to keep the illusion alive that YOUR Shepard is the most badd-ass hero in the whole goddamn universe.

Ps. They don't even need Reapers in the movie, the ME-universe is so mind-boggling huge. This could actually be the Starwars of our generation.

Please, have Christopher Nolan do the directing. If you guys let the director of Iron Man or whoever direct, they'll just replace the plot/character development with explosions and special effects.

I cannot express how dissapointed I am in this > movies.ign.com/articles/118/1183708p1.html news. Why, why, why would they make the movie[s] off of the game[s]? This is idiodic, and this movie certaintly does not have my support. What have you done, Casey Hudson? Really?

I agree 110%. But alas, us fans have just been dealt a great miservice. Casey seems to have just sold us out and flipped us off. Oh well, he's the one throwing away the potential. Clearly he's missing something, or he just dones't give a **** about the fan base. Go ahead, try to make your Green Lantern money, and watch it be a missed oppritunity to join all other video game movie adaptions in their own hell <_<.

I was browsing the interwebz in search of information on this movie, because at ign they said it would be based of the first mass effect game. I typed in mass effect movie plot in google hoping to get some relevant information, but other than some rare good post all i hear is a bunch of stupid fanboys complaining it wont be "their" mass effect. Guys grow up the game you purchased will always be your mass effect the movie is bigger than that its to try to get a lot more people than just yourself in on the mass effect universe. I love Bioware for making this kind of decision, and love that they are actually being involved in the production. I have high hopes for this movie, and if you truly love the ME universe you will too.

there is so much depth in the mass effect universe and a ton of stories that can be told why make it follow an already told personal story? ghey
