The grim reality is that, like it or not, its not our decision, not even in the slightest. They have the legal and financial means to do whatever they want with what they own.
Will we be happy or disappointed by the outcome ? That's just a collateral effect.
Anyway, judging by how things are going, its probably safe to asume that we won't be seeing any Mass Effect "inspired" movie in the near future

Unfortunately 99.99% chance it will suck.
Has there ever been a good video game movie? Don't think so.
Real shame cause the story is very movie worthy.
edit: just heard the guy who wrote the script for thor and i am legend is writing the script for this... movie will definitely be terrible.
I agree with this dude D:
In my opinion, making a movie adaption of this franchise will taint and destroy it.
Its a direct and honest opinion , but there it is.
Thor was terrible, I am Legend was watchable.
I am Norwegian, i would like to spit that guy who wrote the Thor script. It angers me to see how Hollywood balls down the harsh Norse mythology -.-
A bad movie destroying the franchise? Go ask that to Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and many, many others.
Seriously, stop with the ****** poor assesment of the brand´s potential.
As to the Thor part:wait, what? Thor is based on the comic book, wich is very loosely based on Norse mithology. This is like wanting 300 to be historically correct

A: It will focus on Commander Shepard's journey, centering around the story of the original Mass Effect game."
^ WHAT? Definitely will not be watching it if this is true. Eejits.

It won't matter whether the movie is 'amazing' or not; it will not be cannon for my personal Shepard so I will not watch it. Well, it's more that I can't watch it. I won't be able to enjoy it when it goes against my knowledge of Shepard. It could be tear-wrenchingly beautiful and still it will have failed me and perhaps others who have not made a Shepard that comes close to the one portrayed on the screen.
It's probably going to be a bit more frustrating for myself and some of the other female players because it seems it'll do the typical chiselled space hunk whereas we have a strong female character who kicks major butt.
We could have been given a visual and dramatic representation of all the wonderful history. I personally would have loved to see the first contact war.
Why rehash a story which is going to be a lot different for everyone when you could show prospective players the groundworks to the adventures they can have with Shepard and also give current fans a new look at the ME Universe's human history? Emotions towards, say, the Turians could be developed a lot more if we could watch a movie unfold in which they begin as enemies instead of grudging allies.
Basically this movie could be an absolute masterpiece and yet I'll still call them eejits (Scottish slang for 'idiots', in case that confused you).

Oh please, so you never watched any of the Lord of The Rings movies? Or any other movie based on a book or real life events because that would distort your perception of the books/events.
I get amazed when reading this thread. You people are acting like they are making a movie based on your life and any mistake or inconsistency will affect your personal life.
Just relax and enjoy the movie if it ever comes out. Who cares if it's not exactly as your playthrough. And if this causes uncontrollabe 'nerd-rage' then just don't watch it/

1. A good (if not the best) introduction to the universe.
2. It's adds to the universe in general.
3. Thus fan service.
4. They can go anywhere with it. Story wise and character wise, Mass Effect isn't just about Reapers and Shepard.
5. It will just make the franchise unique: Every sort of media Mass Effect is present in has its own story. The books are a good read, even if you're not a ME fan, they're really well written. The games are the "main" story, but there is SO much more.
6. Fans want more of other stuff then just Shepard.
7. Let's say the movie will be really good, and doesn't matter if it will be about Shepard, or about something else. Wouldn't rather watch "some other story" then the story you already know?
And don't go saying that you want Shepards story, because you just want to defend your statement.
8. Bioware said that they didn't want to make the same mistakes as other game-movies, but they're actually making EXACTLY the same mistakes:
Hire actors to play charcters you know and love. A video game, especially Mass Effect, is almost a movie itself. Movies and games are really close together and share the same, if not allot in common.
They are going to shove a 10+ hour story into an -2 hour movie. They can't put all the details in it, so they have to change stuff, thus it will make the fans upset.
9. They say they want to draw new people into the franchise, well why do you need to make a movie about Shepard? Why is he so important? He is not what carries the universe (well, he is in the games but you know what i mean). Why don't you make an epic/personal sci-fi movie, where you show the unique depth and characters of the universe.to lure people in? Heck, they can even take the Evolution comic and make it better. Knowing Legendary Pictures they can make some really good graphic novel movies.

Oh, thanks for posting that link, but after reading the interview I'm rather disappointed. I would have liked for them to tell a new story, and not retell Mass Effect, especially not with a male Shepard. It seems a little lazy to just retell the story. I also don't think they can do a 40 hour game justice in a 2 hour movie. I like the choices and the changing personality of Shephard, and that will of course be impossible to capture in the movie. I find myself wishing the project gets binned, but that's not really fair. Just because I disapprove doesn't mean nobody else should enjoy it
And I don't think there should be a 'canon Shepard'. Especially not a male one
Ok admittedly there's no saying movie Shepard is canon Shepard.
I'll shut up now.
Ok not yet, I have one more thing to say: I second the poster above me. She/He said it all.

I personally can't see Shepard as male; I've always played my Shepard as female, and it will be very strange for to see Shepard be male. I've also read a few fanfictions where Shepard was female, as well, so it just adds to the awkwardness of a male Shepard.
I understand for box office reasons that they made the lead role male, but...I think it would have
been much, much more entertaining to make Shepard female.
Huge disappointment.

They expect more then just gamers to be watching this movie then people that have played it. They are making a shepard that everyone can enjoy, not just YOU.
Even if they did a bunch of succesfull movies of differnt parts of mass effect universe, you are all forgeting one thing, this is all leads to the final battle against the reapers. Shepard is the one that stops and becomes their ultimate challenge, A single organic being.
So if their is to be a movie based on mass effect, it all leads to the main villians, the reapers, how they came to existence, how they were delayed from many planned invasions. Why make a movie based on only first contact war that just sets it's self up for another human meets alien encouter movie?
Providing all this back story history but never do a movie about fighting the reapers with shepard?
I dont understand, some of you freak out and think that some how this will ruin your gameplay? When have the terrible resident evil movies ruined you're gameplay? when has the super mario bros. movie ruined you're gameplay? when has doom ruined you're gamelay? when has prince of persia ruined you're game play? when has tomb raider ruined you're gameplay? IT NEVER ****ING DID, the movies dont effect you're game play. All it is that i see is people wanting the movie too look like the way they played the game, well why not play the game differnt ways? Ive done around 20 gameplays and could care less how they shoot mass effect movie based on shepard being male or female, i care about the story and the characters in this movie, i can just easily turn on my pc and play mass effect and not freak out how the movie is going to be like, and looks like they are doing it based on logicaly the first game and as a male commander shepard. So no point in ****ing about how terrible it will be untill you watched the movie.
The only people that have a right in here to complain is the people that only play as female shepard.

You sir just saved me a lot of time and frustration. Thanks for saying the truth and giving this nerd raging morons a lesson.
Everyone just keeps raging about shepard not being the person they are playing. Who the **** cares about your character creation? There will be a standard shepard that a lot of people play by default and that will be the most attractive for a new audience who is not familiar with Mass Effect. And just like Snowraptor said: the ME game story is much more interesting and unique then a generic war story like the first Contact war. What they could do is give the First Contact war a 15 minute introduction and then move to the ME1 story.

Exactly this. There's thousands of Shepards that have been created by thousands of gamers out there. How Shepard is portrayed in the movie is just the movie producer's take on the character. If you're upset that the movie Shepard isn't exactly like yours, then you've got to be upset at all the thousands of gamers out there as well that didn't create their Shepard in your image. In short, if you've got a problem with the Shepard in the movie not being the Shepard you created, GET OVER YOURSELF. There's nothing special about your Shepard.

Who do you think should play Shepard?
I think Matt Damon would make a good Shepard, he was great in Bourne trilogy. (If you look carefully, he took his gun at 0:42)
If Seth Green doesn't get the role of Joker (that would be shame
