Have you seen the movie "Sphere"? I bet a plot like that would really fit the discovery of Prothean ruins and Element Zero. Except, of course, the setting would be in Mars, not deep in the earth's ocean.

Sorry Arthas, My bad. At least we should have a release date this year...
And maybe a synopsis?

MaleShep:
Jim Caviezel (for an older, more authoritive Shepard. Look at Outlander, the visual is good)
Dominic Purcell (for the almost literal visual translation)
FemShep:
Gillian Anderson (ditto the reason made for Caviezel)
Kate Mara (I think she'd do the younger, redheaded default FemShep justice)

My biggest problem with a movie is that, should it star Shepard, it will not be MY Shepard. Unless he acts exactly as I would have during the games, it just won't feel right.

Late to the party in this thread, I'm sure many of us have laid down casting wishes...

Though I remember seeing this post a year ago, I never participated in active discussion, so I am extremely late the party as well.
I like your choice in MaleSheps, very strong. However, I think Gina Carano would be an excellent FemShep. She has a great action movie already under her belt, which she did greatly in, and looks a lot like most people's Sheps, including mine.

It's ok, I just thought that I missed something...I want this (probably these) movie(s) to happen, so baaaaad! Me and my friends are eager to see some ME on the silver screen... one of my friends noted that we shouldn't buy tickets for the premier (one single screening sometime late at night in my country) 'cause after we watched the movie we would want to buy another one for the very next screening instantly.... soooo true (I hope that it will live up to the quality of the saga).
So true. Hehehehe
And for me, the movie needs to have that epic scope sci-fi atmosphere.

I think it should be femshep played by Gina Carano.
Well, according to an article it will be male Shepard's story. I hope it will be a sequel to the saga. I don't want them to touch the story of the games, because it is perfect as it is (assuming that ME3 will be a masterpiece of a game and story too).
Yep...found it. According to this article:

I have nothing against a movie so long as it's not about Shepard. Set it during the First Contact War or something. Just don't mess with the trilogy.

This is actually happening? God dammit, why?! Mass Effect doesn't need a movie about Shepard, we have three amazing games for that. Besides, we're able to do so much more stuff in the games than could possibly be done in a movie, making it completely unnecessary.

I totally agree. I think Bioware should instead make a movie that will make us (fans) want to replay the games and newcomers to get curious about the games.

I found this in the Mass Effect article in wikipedia:
Red Sand[/i] (2012) is a fan film that serves as a prequel to the Mass Effect[/i] series. It is set 35 years before the plot of the games and tells the story of the discovery of the ancient Prothean ruins of Mars. The film stars Mark Meer, voice of the male version of Commander Shepard in the games, as Colonel Jon Grissom. It was produced by the students and faculty of the Digital Video Program at theUniversity of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Arizona.
I just hope Bioware follows this example, and not make a movie about Shepard.

I'm hopeful that the film will be done well considering Avi Arad has worked on some great films AND BioWare is involved. I personally believe that part of the reason film adaptations of video games fails is because the original creators have no - or very little - say in the adaptation. Hopefully, with three BioWare individuals serving as executive producers, they'll produce a film that pleases fans (I'm sure there will be a handful who complain, but handled right and that number will be small).
I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'm guessing Commader Shepard will be male simply because that is the standard for almost all previous promotional material (Artwork, commercials, figures, etc.) and feels like cannon.

I am very glad that Bioware is involved, and i am hoping that the adaption will be handled a lot better than video game movie adaptions have been done in the past. None of us want to see Mass Effect turned into another Silent Hill or Resident Evil or Bloodrayne.

And one based on the books is as unnecessary until you lay the foundations with the main trilogy.
But a movie based on the games, I honestly don´t see many of those. A world where the galaxy has been wide open. Dozens of races of aliens, almost as many politic organizations/factions. Strong solid backstory betwenn factions. This is the kind of stuff tthat Stars Wars and Star Trek touched upon, but never in such complex form.
Yeah this has great potential to to be a royal screw up, but a part of me thinks that this could be incredible.
The only thing that I want to know is the level of involvment on Bioware´s end. Thor was a great comic book adaptation because Marvel was on top of their property. I hope that Bioware has nice level of input.
THIS. (taken out of context, but describes what im thinking atm very well)
id also like to say that the hole fight between male and female shepard for me is kinda void.
there is no other choice than male shepard when making a movie that is going to apeal to the general public.
i think people are to subjective in there approach to the movie when demanding a female lead.
