I don't mean any disrespect or don't say this with any sexism at all but would a male Shepard not make more sense as Mass Effect always seemed to be portayed to the outside world as somehting which has male Shepard as the leader and fem Shepard is only something those inside the game would think of. To capture a wider audience male Shepard seems the best choice, but these are only my opinions

No. Mass Effect had always the femshep too. She was never ''something in the game''. The thing that made people believe that mshep is the canon (which, of course, is not) is that bioware put, or i should say shoved, his face everywhere.
Now that the femshep has a poster and a proper face (than one of the horrible custom ones) for the first time, lately i've noticed that she has been used by ME gamers more often.

So many games have male roles and it pisses me off to be honest. There should be some equal about genders in games.

Skyrim is another horrible example of this, it has both genders, yet the male is everywhere.

*You're a man, so of course you won't understand how female gamers or male gamers that prefer female roles, feel. ;)

Was really hoping for a movie on the First Contact War instead of Shepard...because everyone has their own idea of who Shepard is and I'd feel that I'd be forced a canon image of who Shepard is if he stars in his own film. I mean I get it that you need some poster face but that was for the game, it's not needed for the film.

I think there's plenty to flesh out in the First Contact War and maybe even star a young Anderson. I dunno...I just would love the idea of a heavy scene when humans first meet an alien species. Like taking the helmet off a turian and totally freaking out. I'm sure there's a way for other aliens to star in the film too-the Citadel can show off a plethora of new alien species.

I would prefer Shepard to be referenced but not necessarily talked about as male, female, spacer, earthborn, colonist, survivor, hero, etc. If the writers want to make Shepard a certain type, that's what the games are for. I hope the writers hear me out. I don't think I would be though.

^This. Everything in your post.
They should do an another story from the ME universe. Not Shepard's story.

I would love to see a Mass Effect movie, but I think Shepard shouldn't be the main character, in fact, in my opinion not mentioned at all.

As many have said everyone has their own view on who Shepard really is, and if they decide to make a movie starring Shepard, they might as well be tightrope walking.

There's so much to the ME universe! Expand on the First Contact War like mireisen suggested, there is just so much the writers could do with this movie... Let's have someone new, fresh faced without any prior attachments to the story.

All I ask is for them not to mess this up for the fans. Please, please don't mess it up!!!

"Will it just be an adaptation of the first game, second game, or a completely new story?
It will focus on Commander Shepard's journey, centering around the story of the original Mass Effect game.

How are you going to address the element of 'choice' that the players have in the game?
The writer is weaving a path through Shepard's decisions that best supports the narrative of the movie and the motivations of its characters.

Will it be a trilogy?
We are really focused on making this a great movie, so we'll see where it takes us.  We have to get the first one right to know whether there will be more.

Will Seth Green portray Joker, the character he voiced in the game?
No casting decisions have been made yet.

Will the movie be focused on Shepard?
Yes.

If the movie is focused on Shepard, will it be the male Shepard or the female Shepard?
Male.

Can you give any hints to potential casting?
No.  Stay tuned.

Will BioWare allow plot / character changes?
Yes, we are working closely with BioWare on the development of this project.

Would you consider Daft Punk to do the soundtrack?
We love Daft Punk, but it's too early to say who will produce the soundtrack."

Well, that's depressing.

Edit: Also, this is the later Q&A given. In the earlier one, not only is Shepard's name spelled wrong (which doesn't inspire confidence), but they had originally stated that it would be a new story set the in the ME universe.

Just been on wikipedia looking for latest updates on mass effect, and read about the mass effect movie. It says it will be based on the original story. So shepard wi be the main character and hopefully it will pick up from where mass effect 3 finishes. At least that way everyone has something to look forward to and proves that the ending of the game isnt that bad (not a bad ending so long as the film picks up were mass effect 3 left off)

is it too early to start camping outside the theater?

did you see the link that said <20% of me players play femshep?

ME is about a equal as it gets, and people are still not flocking to the female character.

there is simply a plethora of research studies that show while the gender disparity in gamers is leveling out, female gamers like different games than male gamers do. particularly when violence and fps's are included.

And yet this doesn't mean that males must be leaders in every game. <_<

As i said, they need to stop putting males in every game all the time and start with female leads. Gamers can play females with the same love as they play with males. Take Tomb Raider for example, after many years this game is still one of the best games in gaming history.
Games with women leaders can sell.

Anyway, the movie is going to kill ME and i'm definitely sure of this. Most movies that are based on games are horrible. The man gets the hot girl and saves Earth. Soooo boring.

So, the movie will be based or "centered" on ME1... :unsure:<_<

Despite the fact that all video game based movies are horrible, I don't have any faith that this movie will be good, especially since they will be destroying the one thing that people are attracted to ME in the first place...choice!

Rachni queen? Ash or Liara (since it will be mShep)? Ash or Kaidan on Virmire? Wrex on Virmire? Saving the council?

It will likely ****** off a lot of fans off! It would be like the new Abrams Star Trek, and that movie pissed off a lot of Star Trek fans.

First Contact War...would love to see that.

John Grissom....would love to see that too.

Something on TIM and Cerberus...that would be a great idea

Messing around with ME1...hell no!!!

Well, I geuss that was my rant. Still, I have a gut feeling that this isn't going to go down well with fans.

Well, with Legendary at the helm, at least it's not some bumbling idiot running the show!
(Oh no, I just added the Bay jinx...)

With luck we'll get perhaps Nathan Fillion as Shepard (hey, look at how well he pulled off Mal Reynolds. Sure, shep is the other side of that coin, but Nate showed he could pull of "space hero", (albeit anti-hero with a heart of gold) in Serenity.

Too old? PLEASE. we could make our Sheps old AND ugly and they STILL did well!
I know many who still want to jump his bones.

My only wish is for Liara to be the L.I. Ash is TOO CLICHED and OBVIOUS in Hollywood.
If we're getting a male Shep, we could at least NOT go cliche with the love.
(Plus I'd bet Nate would be "in it for the alien lovin'"! - jokingly of course. He's a goofball. Plus Tudyk is pretty damn good at motion capture too. Seen I ROBOT? HE was SONNY. He's Firefly's GOLLUM.)

Female Sheperd would be silly, I've yet to see a female lead in an action role that didn't look cliche or overplayed.

The world isn't ready for a not-overplayed female hero (in science-fiction), but when will it ever be?

I'd want the movie to have a duo in lieu of one Shepard. I wouldn't even mind them using no Shepard at all.

I am the opposite when it comes to Shepard LI. MShep being with the hot alien chick, who is the daughter of the enemy, is way too generic. Shepley makes a really good story (and is considered the ME1 canon romance)
How is Ash too cliche and obvious? Or do you mean the romance is?

Both romances make good stories...I just hope it will be Ash because I am bias.

they probably mean the romance is too cliche and predictable. ya know, the strong commander, the sexy squad gal who follows him around, they got stuff like that in almost every movie, and would be a very boring and predictable plot to follow. it has the "oh gee they hooked up, we never saw that coming" sarcastic tone to it.

male Shep and Kaidan on the other hand, lol that was quite a love story in my complete playthrough of the series. he was crushed when he thought I didn't survive the Citadel battle, and got all happy happy when Shep re-emerged, then when they presumably started getting closer and closer, the Collectors attacked and Kaidan was more concerned with Shep than saving himself.

then ya know, Shep was presumed dead, Kaidan was crushed beyond words, they got a warm embrace during the reunion on Horizon, but had to turn on Shep assuming he was now a bad guy......and my Shep had to wait until the end of the final game to get himself some lmao. but hey, when it did happen, it felt like Shep's world was finally complete. lol it felt like an accomplishment to me. lol if I had known all it took was a bottle of Peruvian whiskey, I'd carry one with me 24/7.

would certainly make a helluva love story, and they made such a great couple since my Shep is a looker as well. brown hair and green eyes, deadly combo. but of course this is Hollywood, plagued with homophobes and bigots. THIS love story will never see the light of day. sad but true.

I don't think either of Ash or Liara will work well as a LI for MShep, both will probably be generic and very Hollywood. Then I don't think they will do a same sex romance, I would be unique but very unlikely.
I vote for single Shep for the movie!

They should not make the movie about the first Mass Effect game, and instead base it on humanity's advancement and finding the prothean ruins/mass relay. The movie can end after the first contact war.

Homosexual romances in Hollywood are a no-go, unfortunately. So, forget about mShep/Kaidan or fShep/Liara romances.
It will be a clique, str8 romance with a mShep and Ashley, mark my words. We will have an overplayed boring story all over again, as if we don't have enough of them.

It's painful enough that the movie will be based on ME1 with a mshep.

GOOD. Can't wait to see Ash and Shep get together.

I would be bored if they did the mShep and Liara romance because that is a rather generic story too (the hero gets the hot alien chick...hells ya!!) No, thats not generic at all, especially since he rescues her from certain death (sure, Shep resces Ash, but atleast they meet in a firefight, not some girl stuck helplessly in some forcefield). And, so here we came to the main problem...forget about trying to do ME1 in movie form because it will upset a lot of fans, especailly the Ash, Liara, and Kaidan ones. Almost no ME fan will be pleased.

They could also go for the depressing angle: Ashley for LI, Kaidan for VS. (Does anyone play this or its counterpart?) I suppose it also leaves them free for ME2.

That was really the point I was trying to make. Yes, I do love the the Ashley romance and do I think it is a good story. But ME fans will be bored by it, just as much as those who think the Liara romance is boring. (Iam not going to talk about Haters since most of them are rather irrational)

Again, the point I am trying to make is: do not make the movie about OUR Shepard.

I think Liara is more marketable than ashley. Though having a female love interest who hates aliens and isn't perfect would be an interesting way to go...I'd assume Ashley would be the first love interest, then shepard would hook up with Liara in the 3rd film. That is how I'd write it anyway...keep it interesting
