I think the movie is a great idea. Sure, the movie might make different choices than you made playing through the campaign, but that doesn't invalidate your own choices... no more than your friends' choices cancel yours! I myself played through the game as both Male and Female, Paragon and Renegade Shepherd, but the different choices don't make the game meaningless. Whichever way you choose to play, it's just one of many possible storylines that are available each time. To each, his own (or her own)! So, perhaps you can just treat the movie as Legendary Pictures' individual "playthrough" of the game!

Also, as to whether Legendary Pictures will do the story justice... I believe it's possible! Of course, such a movie can't IDENTICALLY replicate your own experience in playing through the game, just as the Lord of the Rings movies couldn't give you the exact same experience as when you first read the books. However, that's not the goal; you have to remember that game, book, and movie are all different mediums, and some adaptation is necessary, and even desirable, to bring a different but also enjoyable experience, with some similarities, based on certain uniting source elements. Graphic novels are yet another medium, and I might point out that there are many who enjoy the Dark Horse comics based within the Mass Effect lore! In fact, I think that the Mass Effect games themselves are already a blending of mediums in several ways. Consider the cinematic techniques and styles utilized in the cutscenes and in the conversations, such as camera shake and tilt, lens flares, sudden zooms and racking focus. The elaborate and dynamic composition of each frame also shows the influence of film on the artistic development of the game. For many of these reasons, I believe that the Mass Effect games are uniquely and exceptionally well-suited to an adaptation to film. Really, ever since I saw the "Film Grain" setting in the first Mass Effect's options, I've been thinking that the games are hinting... no, just BEGGING to be made into a movie! I am excited to see Legendary's attempt to realize this potential!

P.S. I do agree that some "adaptations" can be disappointing, either due to the fault of the person creating the adaptation, or because the original work wasn't well suited to the choice of medium for the adaptation. I mentioned Lord of the Rings before, and I believe that those books were also exceptionally well-suited to adaptation the the medium of film, thanks in part to the maps, and the pages and pages that Tolkien dedicated to the purpose of describing in great detail the landscape and appearance of his Middle Earth. He provided for a very visual experience, which was perfect for an adaptation to film. Those several-page descriptions of the vista of the mountains can be covered instantly in a 3-second camera pan. Here, truly, "a picture is worth a thousand words!"

I think a film adaption will be disapointing unless they make it with seperate parts. Would really love it if they did a montage of Shepard traveling across many worlds in pursuit of Saren & the conduit with the Galaxy Map theme playing. That would really connect the game & film for me, those uncharted worlds. Also in the sequal (if there is one) would love to see some of those Terminus species the first game built up, I understand why they got shafted in ME2 but heres a chance to explore them finally!

If it's from the same people who did The Dark Knight, Watchmen, 300 and The Hangover I have enough confidence in the film. As for actors, I believe Christian Bale would make a very suitable Maleshep. Seth Green can play Joker, I won't accept any other voice and besides, he looks the part anyway. Andy Serkis needs a part too.

All of those films were popcultural ***. 300? Please, spartans without armor? And fighting with swords and not in position?
The Hangover was a great comedy, that yes, but Mass Effect have comedy in this, but it is a drama, most of all.
The Dark Knight ok, but i don't think anyone besides young people will enjoy.

I want this movie to be real good. To be so good, i can show it to all my friends, not only fans of mass effect or some young guys who likes to see every stupid action movie with tons of special effects. I want to go watch the movie with my family and say proud, that this is the movie about one of the greatest games i've ever played.
Sadly, i think i will watch it alone in my room, trying not to show it to anyone afraid of shame if anyone actually saw me with it.

So make it real good, like those science-fiction movies, like Total Recall or Terminator (first part) with Schwarzenegger, that are timeless.

You've not read the comic, have you? They wore more in the film than they did in the comic.

which is still a silly fantasy movie for anyone who have any basic knowledge about those times.

Let me rephrase what you are saying. So if the comic is stupid, and the film is less stupid, but still stupid, makes it okay?
No it is not. Comics are for comic fans, and this movie was obviously for those fans and for people who likes to see this kind of movie. So for fans, for a very specific group. Unfortunately i think Mass Effect will be too.

Is this still happening? Have any writers been announced? I know no director or actors have been announced, and this thing has been "in production" for awhile. I'm wondering if it didn't get put on the back burner where the idea will eventually die in a year or two. Not to be pessimistic, but that's the nature of the movie biz.

I'd still like to see it happen, and to those who think if they adapt the story of the games and there are different choices made which contradict your playthroughs, please wake up and realize this doesn't invalidate your game or story. Just think of this as an alternate reality, or another person's playthrough.

And no offense, but most of us should stop with the casting suggestions because we're no good at it. Dwayne Johnson? A soap opera actor from The Young and the Restless? Jesus, people.

I was just replaying ME1 and I hope the VFX team for the Live-Action movie uses effects that look more like those in ME1 (specifically the railgun hypervelocity slugs) than those used in ME2&3 (the more traditional bullets). Normal bullets might make for better gameplay but just don't stand out against all the other combat games and will not stand out in what is likely to be an action movie.

On the flip side, the tech abilities and biotic powers should look like they do in ME2&3

I'll go see it anyway but I'll be disappointed all the same.

Only just seen this or would have said so before, but this anime is not the Mass Effect movie. Judging by its own separate IMDB page the Mass Effect movie is still nothing more than a completed screenplay and some people kind of pencilled in to produce it, but whose diarys also look a bit full for the next year or so. Nobody has been cast, nobody has been found to direct it, and that means they're so far away from pointing a camera at someone that even what has been completed, the screenplay, could end up being redone more than once.

Bottom line is that the Mass Effect movie exists only on paper and is still very much in development hell. And unless they can do a vastly superior job than even the best previous effort at a game to movie adaptation I hope it stays there. So far movies from games always suck and eventually there'll be one that sucks so badly it kills the franchise completely, at least for a few years. The ME franchise has not been without controversy recently as it is, so the last thing it needs is a crap movie coming out. I'd say better that they come up with ideas for another good Mass Effect game, or a series of them, and only do a movie based on the original game/trilogy a few years down the road when the Star Brat has faded to an unpleasant memory and ME is near unoversally adored again.

Ugh. Why would anyone want to watch the same tale with Shepard? (Either way, BioWare said they're done with Shepard now. :P ) According to IMDB Pro, it's going to be about the First Contact War. :S

I Love Mass effect the game and characters even Jack and Aria and Grunt who some didn't enjoy as much as well as the Usual Mordin , Kasumi, Liara, Samara. Garrus Valkarian, even Zalleed. and Ashley and Miranda and Talli , Legion, Kaiden just realy annoys me Thane is a more interesting character. shoot kaiden and illusive man is my policy lol and the Star brat Control of the reapers is a lie. didn't work for the illusive man did it ?.

I think it'll be entertaining. I know movies and games can never be the same, or as good, they're different. I'll watch the movie if it ever comes out. I don't expect the depth, or any of that from the movie, but I do expect a decent action film.

Sounds promising and I think the source material is fantastic. That said it just so hard to get your hopes up for a video game movie considering they rank among the worst films ever made. But then I remind myself there is a huge difference between the story of Street Fighter and Mass Effect.
