Oh oh! You've just found my achilles heel, damnit! If Shepard is played by Urban, I might ... just... have... to...watch....it.. NOOOOO!!

A young director would be a more likely choice. It's risky, but Neill Blomkamp and Zack Snyder worked out well when given a chance.

Ridley Scott, while still a fine director, is definitely on the downside of his career. He's also rather old, and I wonder if he really wants to undertake a large project in a genre that has been poor to say the least.

It's almost certainly gonna be Zack. The majority of fans trust him and I'm sure he's already been asked (pure supposition). But let's not encourage them. They just might choose someone new. For every Zack Snyder and Neill Blomkamp, there're many more like them waiting to be discovered.

If they use Karl Urban for Shepard... it'll be the second movie with him I will not have watched. One is because I can't find it... the other is because I still don't support a Shepard based movie.
The universe offers lots of options and possibilities... why kill the possible diversities by making just one version?

Lets talk about how to make it good versus, not how a movie will destroy your favorite game franchise... which is ridiculous... Thats like saying all my love of transformers from my youth is void because Meagan fox cant act and Michael Bay can't direct... Not a fan of these movies but my love for transformers is still the same.
A Mass Effect film would be best served by trying to overwhelm viewers with size and scope. Space is huge, battleships are enormous, the explosions are many and gigantic. As I said in a previous post, the film, should it ever actually materialize, will be one of specatcle, not high drama. Actoring chops and writing will be, and probably should be, secondary to special effects and the like. It is really a case of style over substance, which doesn't mean bad, it just means shallow.
I like Mass Effect and all, but let's not pretend it's Dostoevsky here.

Speaking of such how big do you guys think the budget will be for this untested, game movies dont have the best of rep, so im thinking it will get a modest backing but i also think alot depends on whos directing to get the most out of the c money there going to get, id go for about 70-80 million bracket ...
Well I do know a large name attached to a project can bring in extra money so maybe grabbing some reliable people will help.
But honestly I have no idea what type of budget this should get, with sensible people you can extra do a pretty decent movie on a small budget.

this is always a danger with sci-fi movies, and i think the story actually lends itself very much to it,
otherwise i am sure you will end up with a rough looking "vin-diesel"-type which right there would kill the movie
the cool thing about sheppard is how you can portray her/him not being a stock action, or sci-fi, hero while keeping her/him an heroic figure by her/his actions alone and the influence on others and on the events
imho making it a stock hero would lose much of the impact the character can have in the game and so lose much of her/his personality
sadly i am sure we will end up with the rock starring in it...
for what its worth:
I'd go for a paragon female technician (war hero and spacer), and shoot extra scenes while your at it to make a special renegade dvd feature
Have no romantic involvement of the main character whatsoever
I would make at least two movies, i dont think it fits well to a single feature film
Focus on character development of sheppard, make every decision feel important and let it have impact on the character, there is some rough stuff going on in the storyline
For the presentation i would go for grounded space opera, it should feel huge but clean, especially around the citadel, but with all the aliens running around it would feel a little goofy if the presentation is to gritty
gritty should be left for the battlefield, there should be a huge contrast of those two types settings
follow the games plot as much as possible, leave out the "optional" support cast and give characters like garrus and tali enough screentime to develop them
in the end allways remeber as long as you make the fans of the game happy the movie wont suck, if you go for big blockbuster catch em all, you will very probably end up with a bad product which wont be liked by the fans and wont leave much impact by the newcomers
since i allready wiote half a script for this movie myself (no kidding, actually more like two thirds
oh yeah and whenever possible dont to overuse compter effects, dont go for a fake artsy presentations of films like 300, and keep as much power over the final product as you can

Cg is expensive, and Mass Effect would be full of it. 120-150 million is the about were it would have to be to be adequate, 180 million is improbable, but not entirely impossible. Prince of Persia, for example, was budgeted at around 200 million, so yeah, 70-80 isn't doing.
