Lets talk about how to make it good versus, not how a movie will destroy your favorite game franchise... which is ridiculous... Thats like saying all my love of transformers from my youth is void because Meagan fox cant act and Michael Bay can't direct... Not a fan of these movies but my love for transformers is still the same.
A Mass Effect film would be best served by trying to overwhelm viewers with size and scope. Space is huge, battleships are enormous, the explosions are many and gigantic. As I said in a previous post, the film, should it ever actually materialize, will be one of specatcle, not high drama. Actoring chops and writing will be, and probably should be, secondary to special effects and the like. It is really a case of style over substance, which doesn't mean bad, it just means shallow.
I like Mass Effect and all, but let's not pretend it's Dostoevsky here.
Which is really unfortunate, because this shallow formula fails time after time. A story that engages in some philosophical or psychological tensionat its core but with scads of action on the side is much more likely to stand the test of time.
Unfortunate that Mass Effect is shallow or that it's not Dostoevsky?
The Matrix is a great example of this merger of intro level philosophy and Action movie you mention, and it is woefully dated, both in its cinematic elements as well as its philosophical ones. Action movies, even the best ones, are by their very nature as entertainment spectacles, incapable of provide anything move than shallow exploration of philosophical or psychological issues, and if they try to go deeper, they tie themselves the zeitgeist present at the film'sproduction.

... Mass Effect is a decently written space opera that is about as deep as a Star Wars film. Those a fine films, ones I truly love, but they are not about anything more than the monomyth, and any attempts to add greater depth have been either bad or so far removed from the source as to unrecognizable outside of the prescence of Lightsabers and Jedi.
As to the romance and drama of Mass Effect, I would argue that the plot is more about human exceptionalism, but this isn't the time or place for that.
Yes, but Star Wars is already deeper than any game to movie adaptation that I can think of.
BTW, Grim Fandango ruled. RIP Lucasarts...
This is sadly true, but Hollywood is rapidly becoming aware of the potential of video games as movie franchises. This is due in large part to the fact that the video game industry makes more money annually than the film industry. I think video games are going to be like comic book adaptations. The first ones will suck, but eventually, some years down the road, will we get the game to film equivilents of Iron Man and The Dark Knight. It's highly unlikely, however, that it will be anytime soon.

Regardless, it is Bioware's baby, and their choice to do with it what they will.
This, a thousand times this. So much goddamn whining about 'oh no my precious fanon is ruined if they use John Shepard!'

I hope J.J. Abrams does get involved. All the lens flare could cover up questionable cg.
Hell, NO! His "Star Trek" was the worst Star Trek Movie.

Sounds cool. I'm a bit skeptical about the idea of establishing a canon Shepard, if this is going to follow the same story, but I'll be seeing it regardless I'm sure.
If there will be Sheprd in it, I'm not so sure I want to watrch it.Maybe I will be curious, then I will regret it.

I mean its fun to guess who they would cast to play current characters but I'm guessing it will not be about the current trilogy.

My thought on this is this: Use the universe, not the Main story. Since not everyone's game experience is the same.
We all have faith in you Bioware. Dont let Hollywood spoil the movie by forcing main story into the movie! Otherwise, alot of people that played the game would be a bunch of sad pandas....
