Great.. another crappy Holywood movie made from a video game ahead...

Who knows, maybe this is the first good one.

And before anyone says it, no, Mortal Kombat was not good. Nostalgia Critic Mortal Kombat Review

The Mortal Kombat movie is only good by the standards of movies based on video games. As most would agree, those standards are pretty damn low.

Mortal Kombat is probably the best movie ever made by Paul W.S. Anderson....and it still sucks!

Mortal Kombat sucks as game, too, and so did Doom, Hitman etc....

Mass Effect does not suck as game so there´s potetial for a good movie.

I actually enjoyed the game Mortal kombat 3 a lot but the story (is there a story?) is just not good enough to turn into a film. Mass Effect revolves around plot and characters. And what's the deal with the Rollercoaster Tycoon film adaptation? The story they got for that is a theme park that turns to life. :D

I am very pleased this morning to announce that there will be a Mass Effect movie made by the fine folks at Legenday Pictures! I know there has been a lot of speculation amongst our fans ever since Mass Effect 1 came out as to whether or not there would be a movie, who should star in it, who would direct, would there be a Wrex sized bucket of popcorn, etc and I can now reveal that, yes, there will be a movie (popcorn deal is still unconfirmed.

Legendary Pictures, the studio behind great films such as The Dark Knight, Watchmen, The Hangover and 300 have picked up the rights to make Mass Effect. Legendary Pictures will produce with Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni along with Avi Arad (who has been behind great films like Iron Man, X-Men and Spider-Man). From BioWare Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuck and Casey Hudson will serve as executive producers.

"At BioWare, we’ve always thought of Mass Effect as having the depth, emotion and plot twists perfectly suited for an adaptation to a motion picture,” said Casey Hudson, executive producer of the Mass Effect series. “With Avi Arad and Legendary attached, we believe that the Mass Effect movie will be an extraordinary entertainment event that realizes our vision for the franchise and thrills fans.”

I am super psyched for this and look forward to seeing the Mass Effect movie take shape.

Is it too early to buy tickets? :)

Is this a Joke? Oh god I hope this is a joke, I dont think the plot of Mass Effect is as great as everybody reckons and if they try to somehow adapt it to make a movie odds are that it will turn out to be horrible.

Oh well Legendary Pictures has only bought the rights so far so lets hope that plans for the movie die in stillbirth.

Well, the Doom movie was obviously based on Doom 3 and Doom 3 did kind of suck....well, it wasn't horrible but it was extremely unremarkable in every department except for it's visuals which were impressive for it's time.

I wouldn't say that the visuals were that impressive either (seriously, especially dark games are made that way to hide visual flaws) but the only thing I liked out of Doom 3 was the PDA system which I thought they did a very good job with.

The rest of the game was annoying from a gameplay standpoint. Basically has you inching forward because you know enemies are going to spawn out of nowhere behind you and it was very so ****ing annoying and not at all suspenseful because yOU KNEW it was going to happen.

Mass Effect as a movie just doesn't appeal to me. To me, Mass Effect and other Bioware games are personal experiences where I myself play a role. That is what sets the narrative of Bioware games ahead of the competition.

That immersion would all be gone with a movie. I would just become a spectator rather than an active participant, I have little interest in that.

It would seem like a step down wouldn't it? The only way it would work is if it told a story independent to the game, like the books or whatnot.

Lol, seriously!?  I thought the PDA system was the worst part.  Having to stop the game constantly in the middle of the action to read and listen to stupid messages?  HORRIBLE game design there.

I agree with the lack of suspense.  Doom 3 would've been much more frightening if the enemies actually lurked around rather than just spawning predictably.

True. While Johnny Depp is the best actor alive Vin Diesel definitely looks more badass. Given Shepard´s lack of emotion that´s probably more important for his role.

Well any excuse to get away from what that game provided as action was a plus in my book

The Mass Effect franchise has had a positive impact on my life. Thinking about it gives me happy thoughts, happy thoughts that might be corrupted by some crappy movie sharing the same name as the beloved series of games.

Therefore, in order to protect my positive perception of the Mass Effect series I will not only avoid seeing this movie, but I will avoid all trailers, teasers, and not even look directly at movie posters.

If I'm in a theatre and they start to play a Mass Effect trailer I will leave.

I agree that any Mass Effect film that takes part in the Shepherd storyline will be risky and will likely ****** off the fans, however, a film which starts with the Mars discovery and goes on to cover the first contact war would be much more likely to be successful and fan-pleasing.

That is possible.  I remember in 2002 a Deus Ex movie was announced.  Haven't heard a word about it since.

Damnit when you said Hudson I immediately thought of Bill Paxton and my signature. 'Doh

For a second a wave of awesomeness sprang into my head and I doubt that such a feelign will happen when the movie, if made comes out.

Haha yeah that is exactly what I was thinking when I wrote the post, however I am sure there have been other movies based on video games that have gotten the axe.
