Well Halo was a pretty big one, and in the end the team behind that decided to go ahead with the project District 9.

This movie can't be about Shepard. That would just be stupid. New story, new characters, maybe some NPCs like Anderson could be in it. But please no Shepard.

I'm just hoping that the movie would not ruin the whole story because it's perfect as it is. Commander Shepard is great and the game is about choosing side whether we want it Paragon or Renegade, it's up to the player to decide what path of Spectre they'll choose. If they'll be creating movie and Commander Shepard would be the man or woman, it would spoil the entire game. And the biggest spoiler is that we'll know if Commander Shepard is a bad Spectre or a good one. Is Shepard a "he" or a "she". Is he a Spacer anEarth-Born or a Colonist. Is he a Sole-Survivor, a War Hero or Ruthless, and the most important part is, what would be hes possible Job class Specialty? this part is awesome because the player is the one who creates theirCommander Shepard's Personality.

But whatever, I bet BioWare know what to do about this concern. Anyway, I hope The First Contact War and the Rachni Wars would be included that's probably awesome, since no one knows how the action goes.

I don't think the rights were ever finalized.. with the money Microsoft have they could of developed it themselves if they outsourced movie makers.

Actually I believe they were going  ahead with it, they just ran into budget problems and the studio didn't want to fork over the money.  Then the deal between whoever it was and Microsoft fell through.

I'm not sure why people think that adapting ME1 and including a Shepard would be such a travesty?

I have my own Shepard, sure I do. He's my "main" Shepard, and the one I use to first experience the story. But guess what - I also have five other Shepards, all different, looking different, doing and saying different things at different points. A lot of people no doubt have EVEN MORE Shepards.

So what the hell difference does one more Shepard make?

Just think of it as the movie director's playthrough Shepard. I don't care that any of you guys have Shepards that are different to mine, and I likewise don't care if whoever makes the movie has a different Shepard to mine either.

It'd be a different Shepard, and for the sake of the movie, he (or she) will make different choices, and heck, maybe even get to do things our own Shepards didn't. Does it affect my own playthroughs? Not at all. It's just MORE fun to experience in yet another alternate version of the Mass Effect universe... not replacing or rewriting any of our own versions. It doesn't need to be officially denounced as not being "canon" because there ISN'T a canon anyway. Everybody makes their own. This is someone elses, you can watch it or not. I will be, because I expect it will be great fun. Then I'll probably go home and play my own Mass Effect story, which will no doubt be different.

I'm looking forward to it IF they leave Shepard the hell alone. There is already more than enough good story fodder you can sell to the unwashed masses and give them a unique, but true ME story without taking something as personalized as Shepard and force feed the players who made ME movies possible a story that could utterly destroy what the series as become to them via their own play on things.

Seriously?

So do you only have the one Shepard you play as? If so, you're missing out on a lot of fun and variety offered by the games.

However you play as Shepard, it certainly doesn't "utterly destroy" my own version of events from my playthroughs. I hope my own games haven't "utterly destroyed" yours? Folks post their own playthroughs on Youtube you know, and people watch them, and say how much they liked certain bits, or "Wow, I've never seen that before, my Shep did something different".

How does having the option (and it is an option, you don't have to see the movie) to watch another alternate Shepard doing cool stuff (some the same as ours, some different) a bad thing?

Sure, the movie might suck. But it won't "utterly destroy" anything I've done, or ruin my enjoyment of the games. If it's great, great. If movie Shep sucks, then I'll say "Wow, that Shepard sucks, mine would totally have done XYZ rather than ABC."

I anticipate at least one moment in the film where I'm urging filmShep to punch a guy, he doesn't, and I say "aww, my Shep would totally have smacked that guy in the mouth". But would it automatically ruin the movie, or have me throwing tantrums about how my canon is ruined? Of course not.

Am I the only one who thinks it makes more sense to have Shepard in this film? He's the character that brings it all together.

Yeah well, some people feel that a film with Shepard in it would screw up those people's perception of there 'own' Shepard, which I do not understand.

If you haven't read the novels or never bothered to read the codex than you have no idea how immense the Mass Effect universe truly is.. It is ripe with story telling capabilities without angering a large fan base.. In case you haven't kept track of the interviews that BioWare has given about the topic than you also wouldn't know that Casey Hudson has said that they would never tell Shepards story because that was the gamer's story.

It's different when someone else makes a game or writes some fan-fiction.. When BioWare puts a big stamp of approval on a movie that makes it canon. If they stick to their word they won't include Shepard in the film. However I was troubled by the posting on the front page asking who should play Shepard.. Thats not a good sign and I hope they seriously think twice before alienating a huge portion of fans..

There is a big difference between how films are made and how games are made and I think the film will need someone as charasmatic as Shepard to bring it all together. If the film is about some random story featured in the codex, then I don't think I'd be as bothered as a story about Shepard.

This is the worst news I have ever heard.

Bioware, you should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves for letting this happen.  Mass Effect is one of the most excellent stories in gaming out there, and what's even better is how thoroughly you have allowed your playerbase to tailor their personal Shepards and stories in that setting in a way that feels satisfying and real.  It is an absolute INSULT to your excellent, excellent work on this series to allow it to be bastardized and vomited up by Hollywood with a "canon" Shepard and a slap in the face to all the dedicated fans out there who created their own.

Video game movies are always terrible.  ALWAYS.  And they do nothing, nothing, but degrade the works they're based on.  I will not pay one red cent for this film, and have nothing but contempt for the people who thought it was a good idea.

If the movie is going to be made it needs to be about The battle of shanxi. Period. No new story stick with the ones we don't fully know.

As a screen writer I see a block buster from hell with the first contact war.

"Mass Effect: Shanxi!" The first contact war starring so and so as Ashley Williams Grandfather who has virst contact with the Turian fleet.

Bioware if you do include commander shepared in your film and everyone else from the game make the movie CG Animated because that way you will only need the voices of the people who played in the game screw real people as video game people

P.S.

Screw prince of persia i don't won't the brokeback mountain dude playing the prince

This movie will probably work sort of how they were planning to do the Halo movie.
Can't concentrate on the main hero in Halo because...well, he doesn't talk.
He's a super soldier.
So they were going to shape the story around him, using the supporting characters from the games to tell you what would happen.

Same thing here.
Maybe while Shepard is doing the stuff in the games, they'll concentrate on a new character doing something different.
Trying to retell the games would be impossible because there is no "canon" storyline.

EDIT: Or they could just make a movie with a bunch of different scenes, and each time you see it, it'll be different.
Now THAT would be awesome. But pretty much impossible.

Make the movie in CGI similar to "Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within" that way all the voice acting from the games can be used and keep the authenticity and give greater freedom.

Better still release 2 versions of the movie Paragon and Renegade that would be awesome!!!
