WTF does it matter if this movie revolves around Shepard. There is NO canon Shepard, and even if the movie would be about Shepard it will just be a canon to MOVIE Shepard, not a Shepard one plays on his computer. Though I support movie that is about something else than Shepard, even movie (if its well done) is based on the games it would satisfy me as I dont care what are the origins of movie Shepard as long as story is good and it is faithfull to ME universe. I would consider it just one possibility of Shepards origins. It might be different from my "canon" Shepard but does it really matter a rats arse? Geez, some people should get out more and not be so self centered about their own characters...
Yeah, this has been pointed out many times by many people... people just don't get it. To them, any Shepard appearing in the movie somehow takes on the title of "Canon" Shepard, and they take it as a personal insult. As though the movie's existence is somehow saying "Look, YOUR story doesn't count". Of course that's nonsense.
They have twelve different Shepards of their own, each with their own backgrounds. Someone wants to share a different one in the form of a movie? TREASON!
So we get lots of people wanting movies about the First Contact War or something else that they can fit into their own Shepard's canon. Of course, this means if the movie sucks, we've all got a sucky movie as part of the official backstory. Whereas a retelling of ME1 is CLEARLY outside of continuity, an alternate version, and whether it is great or it sucks, it still has no bearing on our own games. So the people who are being so protective of their own Shepards are actually endorsing an option that could have MORE of an effect on our individual stories. Ironic, no?
But yeah, you can point out the obvious as much as you want... people will still rant about how it spits in the face of the choices they made, and is some ridiculous conspiracy to overwrite their individual stories, blah blah blah.
*shrug*

Just one question: what will you do if you don't like the Tali face they show to you? What then?

I can how it would appeal to the average movie-goer, but still, two hours is not nearly enough time to produce a work that would do the original game justice.

first contact war!!! please!
The first contact war didn't last very long and not much really happened.
If they made a film, I hope it's not about Shepard, because Shepard is a player generated character, his/her tastes and appearance is different to the individual.
I'm not saying that it won't work or it wont be a good film or people wont buy it, just it might make it a little weird.
OK, I've said my piece. NOW CAN I SEE TALI's FACE!?
Humanity makes violent first contact with another spacefaring race: the turians. The turians observe human explorers attempting to activate a dormant mass relay, a practice forbidden by galactic law after the Rachni Wars, and attack. Over the next several months, a brief but tense conflict known on Earth as the First Contact War ensues. The conflict culminates in the turian siege and occupation ofShanxi, the first and only human world to fall to an alien race. David Anderson, newly graduated from the Alliance's elite N7 program, serves in the war with distinction alongside Jill Dah. The brother of Saren Arterius is among the turian casualties.Admiral Kastanie Drescher leads the Second Fleet in battle against Shanxi one month after its occupation, catching the turians by surprise and evicting them from the planet. The turians prepare for a full-scale war against humanity, but this draws the attention of the Citadel Council. The Council intervenes before hostilities escalate further, revealing the existence of the greater galactic community to humanity and brokering a peace between them and the turians. An anonymous extranet manifesto is published following the end of the First Contact War. The manifesto calls for an army, a "Cerberus", to be established to defend humanity against inevitable alien attacks. Derided as "survivalist rhetoric written by an illusive man", the manifesto is soon forgotten by the media
That is a perfect amount of content for a movie.

I hope whenever this movie does come out is AFTER the release Mass Effect 3
...and Shepard should be female in the movie
ME 3 will come in 2011. Then the movie may come in the next year or 2.
As for a female shepard, they should make an extra dvd on her movie.

True, very true. But Turians would be the only alien race we see for the majority of the movie since the council would only show up near the end.
I'd say just let them do there thing with the movie. They need to put something out that helps establish the whole ME universe for the existing fan base as well as a general movie goer fanbase.
Hell Star Wars started the movie franchise with Episode 4 and that did pretty well despite not doing a lot of background plodding.

They don't make game movies for gamers or hardcore fans. PERIOD.
No studio is going to buy the rights to a franchise and then NOT use the character most associated with it. It's not going to happen. This movie will include Shepard. And despite the fact that most of us are 50-50 split between femsheps or malesheps, the movie will feature a generic version of the default male "John Shepard". Why? Because it's easy. That's how these things work, IMO. Movie execs see that a game is popular and they see the characters on the box. They'll go a little deeper to get the general storyline (which will probably be the ME1 story involving just Saren; doubt they'll go into too much Reaper detail until they see if the movie is a hit); they'll get the info on the other necessary characters (not ALL of them, just the necessary ones); they'll hire screenwriters to water-down the plot considerably, then they'll make the film with a lot of fancy effects and explosions that will appeal to the 15-and-under demographic.
Yes, there will be people from BioWare during the process, but that's just to make sure things don't deviate too much from the game. It'll be a very generic telling of the basic story. Shepard will be somewhere in the center...not too Paragon, not too Renegade. He'll probably flirt with Liara, but end up with Ashley (Can't have any of that inter-species dating, that'd make too many of us hardcore fans happy!). The cast will make all fans of the game cringe, because Hollywood always thinks that bigger name stars mean more revenue. And then of course, there's the ungodly amount of marketing that comes with a big sci-fi movie (Although, I'll probably be getting that Wrex action figure).
Sorry, everyone. I love this franchise as much as anyone, but I've seen too many franchises follow this template once it goes to film. I don't see things changing now.

Oh god, this is going to be a movie for the 18 yr old male demographic. Once again, females are relegated to 'love interest'. It might make money, it might bomb, either way it'll be mediocre garbage that sullies the ME game series. EPIC FAIL.
That's because a female couldn't save the galaxy. A genetic pre-determination favoring emotion over reason prevents women from ever being leaders, because sometimes the "mean" decision is the right decision.
Everything worth inventing was invented by a man, including tampons - which, by the way, would make interstellar combat very inconvenient.
"Grunt, hold the line - I need to change pads."
Not to mention that all of the demanding, sweat-producing physical activity that combat necessitates would be a breeding ground for yeast infections. Gross.
The bottom line is: if passive-aggression could resolve conflict, then the Cold War would have been a short one.

Hold up! Bruce Willis is in his mid 50s. Shepard's around his late 20s and early 30s. No way it would work. Sam Worthington or Karl Urban or heck even Christian Bale, but not Bruce Willis.

My concern isn't that a movie Shepard would be considered "canon"; my concern is that condensing ME's plot, characters, and atmosphere into a mere two hours would be a disservice to fans of the games.

It would be hard to get a feel for the whole ME-verse, that's for sure. I expect that whatever the plot, based on ME1 or not, most of the window-dressing that adds the detail that makes the world so real will be left out. We'll probably get a couple of Hanar and Elcor standing in the background for a scene on the Citadel, and that's it. None of the fun chats or backstory. That kind of thing.
You'd probably have to condense and merge some of the key moments too.
Shepard's crew come across an attack on Eden Prime. They do the whole fighting, meeting Ashley, beacon thing. Someone witnessed Saren, so they go to the Citadel and report him. The council are jerks. They'd probably have to merge the Garrus and Wrex recruitments. I dunno, Shepard heads to Chora's Den to meet Tali who has evidence against Saren, there's a big damn Bar Fight where Garrus and Wrex help Shepard out and end up working with him. Shep goes off to find Saren, tracks him to a colony world (a hybrid of Noveria and Feros) where he finds a bunch of Geth attack. They meet Liara, who is currently on this world. Lots of fighting Geth, they find Liara's mother at the end and have that whole confrontation, but she basically does the Shi'ala bit from the game with the mind-link and Cipher stuff. This leads them to Ilos. They go report to the Council, who ground them and prepare the fleet, but they go all rebel and chase Saren. Cue lots of fighting on Ilos, lots of fighting on the Citadel, and pretty much the end of the game as normal.
Basically, merge the three main worlds together, so you get the info about Ilos from Benezia on the same planet as meeting Liara... skip Virmire. Just have the important parts like the chat with Sovereign and the sacrifice take place on Ilos, before using the Conduit... I'd expect the key plot elements, small details in the background to add flavour, and a whole damn bunch of geth-killing.
Sure it wouldn't be as fully-fleshed out as the games, but it would be entertaining and exciting, appeal to movie goers, and hopefully persuade a sizeable bunch of them to check out the game, where they might get sucked into the REAL meaty story

I agree, but Virmire should at least kill one human, though. Kaidan should die. Maybe that extra character...Rana or something? She should die. But keep Wex. He's a BA in my books.
Speaking of Saren, what actor could fit in Saren's shoes?
