i started a new topic as a joke to see if people would like a competition to see who plays conrad verner. it was locked and i was branded a spammer and a troll within 2 replies. thanks btw.

however it made me think! wouldn't it actually be a great competition. look at it this way fans of mass effect wanting to play the hero of mass effect's biggest fan. as no one replied in that thread and they won't lock this one and if you actually read this one tell me what you think.

This is a nice try, but I am afraid that this will be another stupid movie full of special effects and no plot development whatsoever. They will ruin the characters and the mass effect world.

Shepard should be a male in the movie, if it will involve Shepard at all. Although the movie could also be about other "places" or "times" in ME universe and not involve Shepard at all, though I doubt it.

Ah yes, "places" and "times" beyond the first Mass Effect game - for which the movie rights were optioned.  We have dismissed these claims.

I think a really good Idea would be at the start to do:

"50000 Years Ago"...

*show the Reapers defeat the Protheans*

Then come into the present day, just before the Prothean ruins on Mars.
All this would have to be explained, don't forget not just Mass Effect fans will be watching. New people and families who have never even heard of Mass Effect will watch. sort of like the New Star Trek, people who had not seen the old went to watch it.

Wha...?
When WE played the game we didn't know that the Reapers existed for real or that they defeated the Protheans for AGES.  Until we met Sovereign it wasn't 100% certain that it was a ploy or just insanity by Saren.  Revealing that before the story starts will ruin it.  It's completely unnecessary and pointless and wrong.

dEsSiCaTa_UK wrote...
Ranting aside as long as the visuals are the spitting image from the game, the environments, characters, and every desgin are identicle, plus Seth green plays joker and Yvonne Strahovski as Miranda it will be a modern day star wars only infinitely greater. Plus i hope to the Reapers the story is kept 100% intact, exactly the same as the game.

I wouldn't go for 100% identical: there's room for improvement especially since they can do so much more when they don't have to render it in realtime.  That said, obvious changes to the style would be a Bad Thing, as would changes to the plot that actually change the story to not fit the possibilities of the game (naturally there's a lot of leeway there since there are so many things you can skip or do in a different order or which a different outcome.  So long as they stick with (or close to) the possible game choices that's okay.  And if they emphasise or cut some bits to make the story flow well, that's okay within reason - if they mess that up then we'll be banging our heads against the wall to try to forget the stupidity of it.
I agree totally about Joker (and Miranda when they do the sequel, but that's not really relevant yet)

Please just don’t make the movie for dumbasses. Mass Effect shouldn’t be just another action popcorn flick, this is sacred. Despite being an action-orientated game, you always got the feeling that something deeper was going on.

THIS times over 9000

They've barely sold the movie rights and they've already blown it? Pessimist much?
I'm sure that if it looks like that might happen they'll can it first.  And even if it did it wouldn't 'ruin the world' because the games would still exist just as they do today.
Mass Effect 3 has more chance of 'ruining the Mass Effect world' than a movie does.

My first reaction when I saw this on the website:
Nooooooooooooooo! :crying:
My second reaction. . . well, another *no*, but not as loud, more like a desperate whisper.

I know I must sound like a huge jerk, but if this movie turns out to be good it would be the first movie based on a video game. Who knows, maybe this will be the first decent game movie in the history of cinema (hey, everything is possible I guess), but I won't get my hopes up.
Fortunately, since a movie has to appeal to a larger audience than a video game, they will probably try to make the story understandable for people who don't know the first thing about the games. And for once this is a good thing, because hopefully it means they will stay very, very far away from the story of the games. I could live with it if they screw up the story of the Krogan Rebellions or the First-Contact War. But if they give me a Shepard I don't like and try to establish some kind of *canon* story for Mass Effect through the movie, that would really bother me.

Sorry people, I'm not trying to be mean or rain on anyone's parade here, that's just the way I feel about it.

Good grief. Enough with the *canon* crap already. Nothing in the movie is going to affect the games. ME3 will most likely be out and on the game shelves before there is even a final script let alone casting and filming for a movie. People have multiple playthroughs, none of them alike. Shepard both male and female, Renegade and Paragon. The sci-fi genre and comic books are so bloated with alternate universe and parallel dimension b.s. I cant understand this nonsense with people crying about a damn *canon* being established. Get over yourselves people. If something happens in the movies that affects any future game lines in the ME universe then there is right to complain. Until there enough already.

Resident Evil.

I am curious whether the movie will be close to the games´ story or if they will just abuse and rape the franchise, like, in The Neverending Story, Dungeons&Dragons, Wing Commander,...  *shudder*.

Have faith brother. Unlike most videogames that are made to movies ME has actually a vast and deep universe that can be perfectly made to a movie.

But then again this applied to Max Payne too, and look what happened...:pinched:

Oh well, as long as it is miles better than Lost In Space or Battlefield Earth, I wont complain... much... *edit* Oh, and Wing Commander too.

Lets not forget that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time  is coming out tomorrow also.  That will be another video game based movie.

The producers behind The Dark Knight and Spider-Man are teaming for Mass Effect, a live-action, big screen adaptation of the Electronic Arts-BioWare videogame.

Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni have acquired the film rights to the game and will produce the movie along with former Marvel Studios honcho Avi Arad and his son Ari Arad. BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk will serve as executive producers, as will Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson. Warner Bros. will distribute the film.

Furthermore, the producers are in negotiations with screenwriter Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Thor) about penning the script. The Mass Effect movie is in the nascent stages of development.

"Mass Effect is a tremendous property ripe for translation to the big screen," said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary Pictures, in a statement. "Mass Effect is a prime example of the kind of source material we at Legendary like to develop; it has depth, compelling characters and an engaging back story. This coupled with Avi and Ari producing and the skills of a great team adapting the screenplay, are the start of turning this smash videogame based property into a successful feature film."

"We are thrilled to be working with Legendary," said producer Avi Arad. "EA and BioWare are terrific partners who have created a brilliant piece of fiction with a universe filled with amazing aliens and technology. More importantly, though, they created a parable whose conflicts mirror the ones we currently face in our own world. This story emphasizes the need for all cultures to learn to work together. All this magic is presented in a fast paced action-adventure that makes for the best kind of movie experience."

"At BioWare, we've always thought of Mass Effect as having the depth, emotion and plot twists perfectly suited for an adaptation to a motion picture," said Casey Hudson. "With Legendary and Avi and Ari Arad attached, we believe that the Mass Effect movie will be an extraordinary entertainment event that realizes our vision for the franchise and thrills fans."

BioWare's epic science fiction series takes place in the year 2183 and follows Commander Shepard of the SS Normandy who leads a team on a mission to defeat an ancient alien race that invades the galaxy every 50,000 years, wiping out all organic life. The most recent game in the series, Mass Effect 2, was released in January of 2010.

OK well dispite my hopes of expanding the Mass Effect Universe it appears, at least from this article that the movie will be based on ME1 and if I understood correctly Avi Arad's vision is centered around the need for different cultures to work together. I really hope they don't turn Shepard into a Galactic space counselor like Jean Luc Pacard but it'll be what it'll be. The novelity of seeing Mass Effect in movie form will be enough to have me buy a ticket. I hope that Ari and company have at least played through ME1 a few times before they begin re writing it. Enough said.

My main focus is on DLC and ME3 anyway.

So, it really is half-bad then. Half positive half negative, but out of videogame movies it has highest scores so far. So perhaps videogame-movies will have a future afterall. :)

At least it's an improvement over most (if not all) game to film adaptations.

Yeah. He could play the diplomatic side really well but Shepard is still a soldier and Robert is not exactly a soldier type. As a billionaire playboy like in Iron Man he is perfect, but his physique and stature is simply not enough for a soldier.
