I'm not so sure this is a good idea.
I love Bioware, I love Mass effect 1 and 2, Kotor, dragon age.... I love Bioware and all their products....
But a movie is just.....well, i don't know how to put it. Mass Effect has always been about choice. It's always been your (the player's) story. Making a movie will essentially solidify certain events into a "Canonical" sequence.
Not to mention most games turned into movies (and vice a vera) have been disasterous, with a few exceptions.
Now a movie set in the Mass Effect universe, with nothing to do with Shepard............now THAT could be good.
The movie will be about choice too. Go see it or dont go see it.
Again with the canon nonsense. Please explain this to me someone. The game is designed for multiple playthroughs. MULTIPLE PLAYTHROUGHS. Do you play the game the same way every single time?? You play it again to see the various choice options and how they play out. Yes everyone may have their favorite but that doesnt make that Shepard any better than another., Mass Effect 2 is already out, so its not like the movie can do anything to it canon wise. ME3 will be out before the movie is even close to release, so its not going to affect it either. People complaining about it not being *their* Shepard need to drop the elitist attitude and get over themselves. View it as one of many possible play options and be happy that we might actually get to see it on the big screen,
Also it was the rights for Mass Effect that were sold. As in the first movie, not rights to use the ME Universe. Its going to be about Shepard and the events of ME1. Accept it and move on.

I don't see why it couldn't be in entirely CG with all the voice actors from the game...
It could and it should be. Will it be however? Probably not.

Because it's crap to do a CGI movie, when we already have a CGI game (with cutscenes).
It doesn't make any sense to make a ME movie without real actors. If I want a CGI ME, I play the game.

I hope they stay true to the First Book:jkthunder wrote...
I dunno if I would want to see it as all CG/animated myself, even though the idea of making a movie at all seems a little... dangerous (?). But my love for the game makes me extremely stoked for the movie.
mankind is really interracially mixed and blondes are RARE
so if the back ground actors look swedish and hardly a dark skin tone in sight
they FAILED!

Still, I think that the best course of action for ME films is to do something without Shepard (like books/comics).

How is it crap to do a CGI movie?? Have you god awful casting lists that people have suggested on the forums here? It makes perfect sense to do it as much as possible without real actors. Keeping the VAs that have made people fall in love with the game is the best way to expand the ME world to people outside of the gaming community.

In any event I just think having Shepard in it at all is a huge mistake, whether male or female Shepard is the one unique variable to each person who plays the game. The film should not force one image of the character, it will just make it stand out as having nothing to do with the story that each person has established so far. Having the film set entirely separate or at least much earlier than the game is the only way to make it work without ruining it for someone or other, a prequel would be fine, something to set up for events that will later be important.
I would tend to agree that using the Shepard storyline would be a bad idea for the movie. As much as I would be really curious to see that, I think it would leave too much room for disappointment and it would have to be an adaptation of the game story. Besides, we already have the game story in well... the game! And the game(s) are already really rich cinematically - so why mess with that?
They would be much better off with a new storyline set in the Mass Effect universe IMO. Even as mentioned above by EmperorKaveje , something tied to the "Revelation" book (but again, I don't think a direct adaptation of the book would be a great idea) might be good, which could feature characters like Captain Anderson and perhaps even Saren and Nihlus. Having it based on the First Contact era would be pretty cool in general I think, and leave them a whole lotta room to expand future storytelling in games, movies, books, etc.
