I never read any of the ME novels, but they seemed to do fine without Shepard starring. I don't see why the movie should be any different.
Though if Shepard must feature in the movie, I do have a couple of names I'm hoping to see as candidates :
Sam Rockwell, Sam Worthington, Robert Downey Jr.
Currently hot property in Hollywood, and rightly so.

Shepard must be an extremely charismatic individual as he/she is able to resolve impossible situations through his/her wits be it charming of intimidating.

Sam Worthington wouldnt be able to pull the role off imo. He isnt suited for big action movies.. Clash of the titans wasn't good (story sucked but his acting wasnt that great in it, and avatar doesnt count it was too much done with cgi) and i couldnt see RDJ as a shepard he would bring too much "iron man" to the movie
Seen Sherlock Holmes, Tropic Thunder?
The man is a chameleon. I would love to see how he would bring Shepard to the big screen. That's RDJ.
Granted Sam Worthington didn't do himself any favours in Clash of the Titans, I'm sure his role in Terminator would also have a say in the decision.
I didn't suggest these three men on a whim you know. They are each a force in acting. I'd love to see Johnny Depp, but I don't see him as Shepard.

My suggestion in Chiwetel Eliofor fits every single one.

RDJ is a great actor, no doubts there. just saying i dont think he'd be suited for shepard, (im not saying he couldnt pull it off though) I think he fits garrus more so though
Sam Worthington isnt that good.. terminator he was ok i guess, he could maybe play kaiden.

I know this has already been stated, but I am most concerned with if they do a story on Commander Shepard, they would have to be very careful on how they do it. Obviously on the different backgrounds Shepard can have, Shepard can have multiple personalities based on paragon or renegade behavior. Then of course the different course of actions that shape the direction of story can vary. Also I don't want any film directors including Bioware to say that whatever happens in the movie is canon; if they do that, it beats the purpose of making Mass Effect open-ended because everything you do is canon. If they do story on Commander Shepard, maybe they should do a plot that consists with him going through N7 training or even how he develops his biotic abilities because he has biotics as part of the story. If they scrap that, then I completely support the idea of having the First Contact War or even a story featuring Captain Anderson(although he has a novel written on him already). I know I am rambling but Bioware... I really hope you know what you're doing. Please do not ruin my image of the universe... it's my favorite one.
They would just base shepard on what they pick as the standard choices and personality. but they would need to be careful with the story because people might compare it to the game too much

Good choice, still, they'll go looking for someone who looks like Mark Vanderloo possibly.Axeface wrote...

Robert Downey Jr is an amazing actor. Since he has gotten his life back on track his career has exploded again, and I am happy to see it. Downey however is well over 40 years old. By the time that the movie would even be close to filming/release hes going to be almost 50. Shepard is not 50!

What game are you playing?? I have seen this a couple times now and it continues to baffle my mind. Brandon Keener IS Garrus Vakarian.

Well I for one hope that they are intelligent and realise that how the actor looks is completely irrelevant.
Otherwise the bajillions of people posting the same (Just a list of voice actors from the game with pretty pictures, pointless?) will get their way.
Edit. It obviously is a good idea for characters that will be voiced. Tali, Garrus, etc. They simply must use the VA's for them as they all do an excellent job. People who will be acted however are open for change.

There are really only 4 roles that should even be considered for re-casting.
Shepard
Ashley
Kaidan
Liara
and its only because those VAs can not match the physical needs of the characters themselves being live action. Everyone else is either going to be CGI, which instantly reverts back to the original VA filling the role or can match the physical needs of the character close enough live with minor makeup or CGI work.

I hope they announce if it is going to be based on the game plot or some other story though, it would be nice to know. Either way Im looking forward to it.
Sure, it COULD be bad, but until I see it (and possibly dont like it) I will stick with enthusiasm!
Also, I agree that they should get actors based on who would play the part well, not if they look like the model, and that they should use the VA's for the CG or masked characters (Garrus, Tali, Wrex).

I just want to expand upon what another poster said:
There are different ways it could go:
Type 1: The Path of the Literalist
Mass Effect (movie #1): Narrator tells us (during the opening credits or an epic LOTR-esque beginning sequence) that the protheon ruins are found, technology leaps forward, and the relay is uncovered as well as the contact wars and the blah blah yada yada codex codex then the original mass effect story plays.
Mass Effect (movie #2): Like the game (but loosely based on it).
Mass Effect (movie #3): Like the game with a twist(ed?) end(ing).
A Mass Effect movie (movie #4) is made as a prequel to the other three.
Type 2: The Path of the Prequalist
Mass Effect (movie #1): The mars mission and the finding of the relay
unfold on screen ending in the beginning or peak of the first contact wars.
Mass Effect (movie #2): The Shepard Sega or post Shepard sega begins.
If the former it would unfold like me1, me2, and me3; if the latter, it would
take place after me1, me2, and me3's storyline- or during without focussing on Sheppy.
Mass Effect (moive #3): The Culmination of the series- whatever the heck it turns out to be (depending on the choices taken above-just like a bioware rpg!).
Oh and then there is type 3: Just find a great and amazing way to tell the reaper story because it has so much
potential for a movie and I want the rest of the world (the part that doesn't play bioware rpgs) to see and experience this truly wonderful and incredibly enjoyable story the only way they all can- in a movie.
Yes, not everyone can go to the theater or will, even to see a movie about blue lesbian aliens and faster-than-light-travel, but more people around the world see movies (in general) in the theater and on DVD than play role-playing-xbox-orientated-then-ported-to-PC-with-terrible-control-and-console-related-flaw-games.

Even if he were an actor, which he isn't, then we'd have a Shepard with a strong Dutch accent and a high pitched voice. Do you want that?Psychogamer 94 wrote...
Forgot to add, if Bioware does make a story on Shepard, don't get a stupid generic actor; I would personally prefer if Bioware chose the person modeled Shepard (if he acts)
