"At BioWare, we’ve always thought of Mass Effect as having the depth, emotion and plot twists perfectly suited for an adaptation to a motion picture,” said Casey Hudson, executive producer of the Mass Effect series.

What really makes Mass Effect a good basis for movie-making is its rigid adherence to authored narrative and lack of in-game choices.

I think it would be best if it started out with humanity discovering the prothean ruins on Mars, it should show the reaction to the findings back on Earth. Maybe in a District 9 fashion.

After that it's about the rise of the alliance and it culminates in the First Contact War :D

As long a Seth Green plays Joker, I'm 100% on board with this.

Hell yeah, that would be awesome.

The people who don't want Shepard in the movie... sorry. There is no way they don't use such an iconic action character.

And if that's the case how many people won't touch it with a ten foot pole?

Mistake is what that would be. First Contact War would be super epic and a lovely way to introduce the Mass Effect universe to the general non-gaming public.

*thumbs up*

Best guess is there are about 73 of you who wont touch this with a ten foot pole due to them ruining your Shep/cannon.
Most of you were probably going to illegally download it anyway so I doubt they'll miss much profit from you.
99% of the game fans will not care when Movie Shep is the default shep and makes X choice or romances Liara.

I'm okay with the premise of a Mass Effect movie.

If it's about Shepard, great. I wouldn't mind some establishment on Bioware's part on what's actually canonical and what isn't. The Facebook page for this is covered with whiny people complaining about 'wah wah wah the game is about choice'. Here's the thing: Yes, it's about choice, but that doesn't mean the creators of the story (read: BioWare, not you people with entitlement issues) don't still the final say on if something actually happened or if it was just a 'What If' scenario. As far as I'm concerned, Shepard's first name is John and he looks exactly like he does on the boxart, even if I've used default Shepard in-game. Get over yourselves, people.

If it's not about Shepard, great. I hope they come up with something interesting in this case because the Mass Effect universe is overflowing with potential for expansion.

I might be reading too much into this, but the statement said "compelling backstory", which leads me to believe that the film won't be about shepard, but about the humans' first contact with the council races, and the turian war. I think this is great news,a ctually, because it means they won't be interfering with canon and can't be criticised for failing to make it EXACTLY LIKE the game. Instead of just repeating what's already happened, this means we can just expand the universe as it is. Unless I'm wrong. in which case the film will be terrible.

nothing against the fem shep i have one of each gender but it should be the more iconic of the two

The only way I can see this working is if they do the film in full CG with motion capture acting throughout, like in Avatar.

What's the betting Shepard will be some lame guy though?... Shepard is, and will always be, female to me.

making a sheppard film kills the spirit of the mas effect game, choices, character customization etc etc, however the mass effect universe is so rich that it was a matter of time before it caught the attention of hollywood, specially after the awesome cinematic scenes in ME2,

bioware don't let hollywood screw all your work and make a film for the first contact war, maby anderson's story?i don't know but it would be interesting to see the discovery of the prothean beacon and how humanity managed the technological leap..when they first crossed a mass relay and war against the turians etc etc..

Guys, this movie isn't about pleasing us fans. It's about pleasing the average gamer or movie goer, as in, retarded.

Really? The Mass Effect movie was announced and all I got was that feeling of your life being finally completed?

Seriously, I'm personally rooting for a Shepard-based storyline. I mean, bringing a wider audience into a franchise with a story that's out of ME1 and 2's story arc would be a little odd...

If the cover of the game has always been a male Shepard, why do you think there's even a chance of seeing a female Shepard in a movie?

Looking forward to the movie, but a bit sad because it will probably ruin the premiss we all love in ME, that Shepard is who and how we want him/her to be.

EDIT: By the way, despite my first sentence, I must say I would really love to see a female Shepard. Action films lack credible and well thought up/structured female protagonists. Mass Effect is so well written that the female Shepard is almost a perfect character.

OMG, if it dealt with Captain Anderson and/or the First Contact War, that would be so freaking amazing. And what about Drew Karpyshyn? He did a great job delving into the realm of Mass Effect in the novels, I hope he's a big part of the films.

Both of those descriptions are true. Is there anything particularly wrong with that?

And I'm honestly surprised that there are still people who think male Sheapard is not being treated as canon. When you catch a kid with his hand in the cookie jar, and that kid adamantly claims he's not taking cookies, do you believe that he's not taking cookies? Male Shepard has always been canon.

Shepard: Nathan Fillon

I also think "The Rock" would do an admirable job. I would not argue too badly with Will Smith. If they are going a bit darker, Denzel ala "Book of Eli" or Bale ala "Dark Knight".

Ashley: Morena Baccarin or Scarlett Johansson

If Bioware really wants to be innovative though, they'll do a femshep.

What people need to focus on is that they are going to take one hellva good game and make a bad a** movie out of it. Just sit back and enjoy the ride, isn't that what movies are for anyway? Those of you that are whinning about what if they don't follow it just right I have just one thing to say..... Get over it!!!

Some of us people are women, who play women, who bought role playing games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age because we could play our story and not be forced into an 18 year old guy's fantasy .... for those of us male shep in NOT canon, and BioWare has been pretty good about not making things canon. I would say we were spoiled, but one of the reasons I mostly play BioWare games is it is like the only game company around who actually gets that girls game and let's us make choices that make sense.

Well, I can only hope the good folks at Legendary will treat the license right. I think it's been proven that video game movies are neither good nor hugely profitable, so there must be -something- about Mass Effect that's making the execs give it a chance. We can only hope that they attach a half-decent writer and director.
