On another note....

I'm trying to kill half of you right now with sheer hate. Not working so far, all I got is an aunerism, but I'll keep at it. Because you deserve it.
Reading the comments of this thread makes me feel like a scientist in a literal creationist convention. Because all those complaints have just as much connection ro common sense and reality.
You are spreading the stupid people!

It wouldn't hurt you to think rationally a bit before posting.

Sadly common sense and the means of rational thinking are not requirments to connect to the internet... So I suggest lots of aspirin for that headache you'll be dealing with from hate projection.

The way I see it, the movie has a few potential ways to go with a few outcomes. Some examples of what I find likely:

Alternative one:
The movie covers the First contact war or some other important conflict, and does not touch the Shepherd storyline. As someone said, the Mass Effect universe is big. However, by just doing this, you take away a sheer load of the epicness that just is the Mass Effect series. The movie wouldnt touch the reapers, it would be human-focused, you'd barely see aliens and only get a rather basic introduction to the universe. Nice for all the people complaining about not getting their personal shepherd and his/hers experiences on the screen maybe, not so nice for the rest.

Alternative two:
The movie covers the main Mass Effect storyline with Shepherd, involving reapers, the citadel and Saren. Since it will be difficult...to say the least...to cover the entire storyline of the game triology into one movie, it would either be very changed and swift in comparison to the games, or built up in a trilogy like the games. Most people might regard the idea of a Mass Effect trilogy strange since the game is in threes too, and fear that it would be a copy of the game plot. I really doubt such a thing would happen, as it would bug the millions of people having played Mass Effect to tears. Remember: Some -really- competent people are putting this project together, they are probably aware of the issues and trying to find a middleground and a reshaped plot to keep the fans happy.

Alternative three:
The movie FIRST focuses on building up a background to Shepherd and the Mass Effect universe, with events like the Mars discoveries and the First contact war, and maybe the blitz. It then follows with two movies covering the main storyline involving shepherd himself.

Im saying "himself" because it strikes me as beyond likely that if Shepherd is actually brought to the screen in the movie, they will use the "standard" Shepherd male appearance, as used in all the trailers, avatar pics and posters. It would just make sense, as its what most people associate with Shepherds appearance.
In either case, I see it as likely that there are plans for more then one movie. There's alot of potential to cash out on it, the storyline and universe of Mass Effect could probably support a hundred movies, and Legendary Pictures are known to produce top quality triologies.

And frankly, I find these news of a movie awesome. Although I understand some peoples fears on how the heck they will build a good movie from an RPG with a million choices, I must say: Have a little faith. Bioware themselves will directly be involved in the moviemaking. If they could make this awesome game series from scratch, they can certainly make it work in a movie, especielly with the help of the talented people now listed.

And if it turns out to not be worthy of living up to the game series you have two simple options: Dont go see it or forget it. Although it strikes me as unlikely that it will be a total failure. It will never reach up to everyone's expectations, that's impossible. But it might reach up to most.

Legendary Pictures and Zack Snyder and ME Universe = Best Sci-fi at least for a decade.

Just
look at the Watchmen, a lot of people said it can't work on film,
because the amount of details and levels of the story, the characters
and so on. You can "hate" the idea or the story of the film, but the
quality of the story telling is perfect, very precise and balanced. Even
a glass of water in the set has got the emission of the original core
idea, the feeling yes it's Watchmen. This kind of proper work, what ME
needs, not to transform it to stg else.

ME has got the SCI like
Star Trek, the FI like Star Wars, but ME is not a fairy tale like SW. It's got realistic, darker,
real-life sides like Blade Runner and Watchmen. The movie can't has the feeling that everything
will be fine...

I think a good ME movie is not action orientated,
like Clash of the Titans, with a lot of action scenes and almost
nothing between them. Sure, good action scenes are part of the
story(every chapter ended with one), but in the way like at the british S.A.S\\\\: short, hit-and-run (This is
very well described in the first 2 "books") not like Rambo. Not too many, too long, but well made. It
can be a good choice to train the actors with peoples, who are\\\\were in
active duty (at Special Forces of course). How to handle a gun, shoot,
move, the tactics, because Shep isn't a regular soldier-boy, and his
"army" a militia. He's working in a small sized group, they are every
time outnumbered, so without them he's nothing and vica versa. Trust and
co-op!

Even if the movie s*cks, this part has to be realistic.

Female Shep, like
the full Par\\\\Ren way, is not an option. Saren is Renegade, Shep isn't. I
think, like in real world he's 70-30 Par\\\\Ren (like Bruce in Die Hard
1-3), and 70-30 Soldier\\\\Engineer, not a biotic.

Andy Whitfield! :) Matthew Fox
is a
doctor type, he can't get N7 training, he would die in it..:)

Saren has to be as important as Shep.
Saren, like a villain, is as good as the ME universe itself!

Story:
If Shep is in it, we don't
need new (maybe s*it) story.
ME1 and maybe cut-mix with the
Revelation(first sections closed by the dialogue by Anderson and Grissom
before First Contact War).

Eden Prime, Citadel, Noveria(with
MAKO and rachni!), Feros(maybe cut out or changed),
Virmire, Short-Citadel, Ilos(this is very short in the game too). We don't need sidequests, only the main
core, prelude like Revelation. It can be done, hard but like Watchmen, it
can be done.

But if Shep is NOT in..For the first film and I think is the better, maybe the best way:
The full story of Revelation. The FCW is only 2 month long, and we don't need a war story to take time away from mass effect. This is a brand new world for the 90% of the audience, you can't say to them.. s*it read the Codex or the books to understand it....
Saren is amazing in it, the story is good, there are no questions about who\\what\\how everybody will love it, short and light enough to take it to the big screen and every part is full of ME feeling.

Make a highly detailed, proper sci-fi, story
telling, like Watchmen, mix of Star Trek(SCI) and Star Wars(FI),in a
mature way like Blade Runner.

The Saren and Anderson story was detailed in the novel mass effect revelation. That book also briefly mentioned the events of the First contact war, but not the details. I think it will be very interesting if it is based on First Contact but the question is, who will the protagonist be? N7 Anderson? D:

Maybe some completely new character whom we suddenly get to meet in ME3, big shot alliance hero or so :P
Or Anderson or Ashley's grand daddy

This will probably be the only game turned film i will ever watch, however that is because the film makers will have so much reference material they can use compared to any other game lol.

Lol not gonna read all 85 pages of replies, but I really, really, really hope that Shepard won't be just a generic white dude. Would love for a female Shepard, but ANYBODY OTHER THAN A WHITE DUDE would be welcome.

Shepard should be Asian and have some nug nug time with Kasumi! :o

But seriously if this movie is about Shepard, I will wait for the DvD release. The Mass Effect game is already a movie, with the player as the star. It would suck very badly if I see some other dude or wench acting as my Shepard.

I don't think so. You just remind yourself this is a different medium and a new interpretation. Its done with music, writing, art, etc. If its well done, doesn't matter who Shepard's character resembles.

Thats a big if...

Well... seeing how BW are involved I'm sure they will do their best not to screw it up, after all they are the creators of the Mass Effect series... and I don't even think they would consider doing something stupid with the movie.

Bioware what are you thinking? Cash-in? This is gonna do nothing but p*ss off most of the ME fanbase. What LI is Shepard gonna have? Or if it is FemShep or Male Shep? Renagade or paragon? The only way this can work without letting most of the community down is if it aint about Shepard, but then it aint realy ME but just set in the ME universe without Shepard or his squad.

All you have to do is go into the movie with an open minded i mean if it is done right ie a situation comes up for a paragon or renegade action you can odviuosly tell the one that was chosen it will be a good movie and personally i would like a prequel to

Prince of Persia & Resident Evil prove that they will make up their own **** and not use the lore

Mark my words. This movie will be a joke and Bioware will get laughed at.

As long as they let Drew and the other guys write the script it will be a badass movie.

Crap will happen if someone from Legendary Pictures writes it.

Way I see it, this is a perfect oppurtunity to expand on the ME universe. I agree with the First Contact War stuff - it would offer a lot of scope for good battle scenes with the ME focus on characterisation in between. If not the FCW, then it provides an oppurtunity for a lot of fan service. Let's face it - there is a large chance that we could see cameo performances from the main cast, perhaps Garrus at C-Sec, or Wrex perhaps. They're aliens, so all they need is the voice actor to come in and record, and CG can take care of the rest.
Also, the CG needs to look real. I'm thinking along the lines of District 9 for aliens and Star Trek 2009 for space battles (why is it that low budget films always seem to look better in this respect than big budget ones?)

The best cgi in the world won't make Wrex's ability to enunciate human words plausible. Same with Garrus and his quad lips.

This, along with the writing is what worries me most. Too much cgi is a bad thing (unless it's an animated movie to begin with) and they might come perilously close to Jar Jar Binks territory with some of these alien races.

The fact I see overlooked here is video games get something of a free pass in the plausibility department. What works in a game might well be convincing in a comic book adaptation, or an animated feature - but in a live-action movie? I'm not so sure.

I would love to see this movie work, but it has three HUGE hurdles:

1. It's a cross-over IP, which equals cash cow to those involved.

2. The writing won't hold up to that in the game. Let's face it, the writing in the game easily tops that of most action
flicks.

3. Making the alien races believable and not laughable. Star Trek had the right idea in this regard, as most races involved are humanoid. Makes sense biologically as well as thematically.

But what the hell, I'll gladly eat crow if they pull it off.  ;)

Bringing Mass Effect to the big screen requires someone with dedication and talent.

I doubt Legendary would be willing to make THAT large of an investment in a "stupid" video game movie. Don't be fooled for one second that Legendary cares about anything more than making a quick buck. Same with the Bioware guys
