shepard is the most important and if you don't get him right the movie doesn't work - he's got to be a badass but also be believable as an upstanding kind of guy who would make the honorable choice in situations. with that said, i think an awesome choice for shepard would be alexander skarsgård who plays eric on true blood. if you think about his role as brad (iceman) in generation kill, he perfectly fits the bill of a guy who can kick but but also has a conscience and tries to lead by example. that's what makes shepard shepard and i can't think of somebody else who can better blend both of those qualities together.
other choices for shepard could be hugh jackman, timothy olyphant or ray stevenson (titus pullo from rome)
seth green would of course have to play joker
james woods as ambassador udina
laurence fishburne as commander anderson
damian lewis (capt winters in band of brothers) as garrus
angelina jolie, michelle rodriquez, or zoe saldana as ashley williams
ray winstone or mickey rourke as wrex (if he's not CG)
charlize theron as liara t'soni
helen mirren as dr. chakwas
jim beaver (ellsworth from deadwood) as navigator pressley
and
jason segel in a cameo as conrad verner

Remember Pressly commenting on all the medals Anderson has? We finally get to see Anderson earn his stripes.

Who honestly does not want to see Admiral Jon Grissom? The movie can intro with him meeting Anderson at Arcturus when he graduated N7. This can lead into a brief recap of the First Contact War and avoids having to spend the next 1.5 hours on this sole event, a "short and relatively bloodless campaign".

We can finally put a face to Kahlee Sanders and get a better idea of what her work with Dr. Shu Qian involved (long speculated to be reaper back-engineering). We can also see her relationship with Anderson develop.

We get to see Saren Arterius... the real Saren. The Saren that would crush your eyes with his thumbs just to get information out of you (as a warmup). The Saren that took pleasure in causing gratuitous amounts of pain to anyone that stood between him and his goal. His "interview" with Groto alone is worth the price of admission.
???
Edan Had'dah... a batarian that may just be the catalyst for bringing about the reaper threat. I'd say he's a pretty important figure and would make for an interesting antagonist.

To date, I've yet to see or read about a krogan as intimidating as Skarr. Perfect opportunity to show how truly menacing a krogan battlemaster can be. This also gives the opportunity to cameo a younger Wrex back on his homeworld idolizing Skarr and wanting to become a mercenary one day... or maybe even butting heads with him at some point.

Ambassador Anita Goyle is probably my favorite character in the novel. She was the consummate diplomat, but was tough as nails and did everything she could to defend human interests. We get to see exactly how she went about paving the way for the first human Council member.

I don't know about you guys, but Jill Dah was a character that stood out to me. She was crucial during the Sidon mission. I'd love to see a decent actress portray her, even if for a relatively minor role.
A whole host of cameos can be added to a movie based on the novel without having to commit too much to their development and disappointing fans: Liara, Benezia, Samara, Wrex, Chakwas, Thane, Zaeed, Illusive Man are just a few examples. This also sets things up for sequels based loosely on a combination of the novels and games... again never dealing with Shepard directly.
All this to say, a movie about First Contact War limits the opportunities for cameos and races that can be touched on with more than just a passing reference. A movie based on the game will cause all kinds of vitriol within the community based on the fact that there is no canon Shepard story. This would just be asking for the film to get ripped appart by either males, females, renegades, paragons, vanguards, infiltrators, etc etc. A movie based on the novels, however, can offer fan service and bring many "new" things to the table at once, without infringing on Shepard's story. I say it's your best shot at making a film that satisfies most fans' expectations, BioWare.

That and most fans would end up hating whoever is cast as Shep anyway because he/she doesn't fit into their idea of Shep. And they wouldn't be wrong.
The ME universe isn't just about Shep, most of us know that. Drawing from anything but the current game timeline, or even a parallel story to the game (but I don't see what that could add to a movie) is a recipe for win.

If anyone goes bankrupt because of the movie it would be Lengedary. The Square-Enix thing was like the hundreds of other merger/buyouts in the video game industry and likely had little to do with the movie's success (or lack of). Plenty of popular games had bad movies made, but the studios that made the game survived fine. Even some of the movie studios lived on.
That being said i hope the best for the ME movie. With the people behind it, it doesn't look like it will pull a Uwe Boll (if you don't know, he's made doezens of horrible movies based on video games). Still I am always sceptical of video game based movies, since most of them never meet our expectations, even when big names are included. I also REALLY hope they don't include Shepard. Shepard's story is your story and it shouldn't be canonized. Bioware once said they don't want to create a canon Shepard, so he/she always remains your's. I hope the money of Hollywood doesn't change their mind. They could set it before or even after (it probably won't come out until after ME3 anyway) the games. But if they have Shepard, no matter how good the actor is it won't be MY Shepard, and would be disapointing.

Egh. That movie was horrible. I wasn't even a fan of FF when I saw that, and I nearly walked out of the theater and asked for my money back (if it wasn't for that beautiful CGI that it had going for it).

Mass Effect: Revelation is not getting enough love in this thread. I think making a movie based on the novel is a "best of" scenario, since we get to see people and events that fans are familiar with without having to involve Shepard directly, obviously something many fans are against. Cameos can be added for much of the ME1 characters, even if at an earlier point in their lives. Just a few possibilities:

alexander skarsgard should stay a vampire. And your other choices for shepard are not right for this huge of a role. Sorry. (btw, Timothy Olyphant has been scripted in Hitman 2 - man, is that going to suck)zcp212 wrote...

James Woods for Udina? Really? That's dumb. They don't even have the same skin tone. Somebody who's black should play Udina, but NOT James Woods.
Laurence Fishburne...that's who I thought of at first, but they could still do Keith David. He's voiced Anderson and a little lighter skin tone couldn't hurt.
Damian Lewis as Garrus...idk
Angelina Jolie - no. Jolie's a little too old for Ashley. Zoe Saldana - maybe. I'd have a hard time, though, if they decided to choose her and try creating Ashley's skin tone. Michelle Rodriguez would work. She's got that military personality for that.
Ray Winstone & Mickey Rourke...if they weren't CGI, I would hate both of them as Wrex. Wrex's voice is much, much deeper than the two actors. I don't think the movie can generate enough money to make Krogan costumes, let alone Wrex. That's why it's better that Wrex is CGI; the voice actor should respectively take his role - i forgot his name.
charlize theron - hard to swallow. Liara's youthful innocence wouldn't fit Theron's profile. This may be a little too much, but how about Emma Watson as Liara?
As for those minor characters - Pressly and Conrad - I wouldn't worry about who plays them just yet.

Yeah sorry about that... I thought about it shortly after posting but my point was just to show likenesses, not necesarily suggest them as the only actors that could play the part. In any case, here goes:

Coby Bell

Chance Kelly

Bruce Greenwood (would probably make a better Illusive Man)

Charlize Theron (has really good chemistry with Will, so a duo with these two again would be cool)

Kate Beckinsale

Kevin Grevioux

Patricia Clarkson

Rhona Mitra

This should be an epic movie and since I see Casey Hudson, etc. will be playing a part in the creation of the movie, high hopes are present.
Hopefully they keep on the Mass Effect storyline with Shepard and his crew. If they steer away from that and try to make some "spinoff" with random characters etc. you can bet on a flop.
