The 'official' Ashley Williams support thread 1.1

As for the dating question, I pointed out in some earlier posts, I don't think Ash has dated someone during the last two years. I don't think dating was on her agenda that much before she met Shepard and would be even less after she lost him. I just imagine her sisters take her out to meet some other people from time to time, but I can't imagine she will pursue any of these acquaintances further.
I do also think Shepard's death made her harder. I really got the feeling in ME1, that her romance with Shepard was the first time she truly fell in love (for sure it was not her firsttime relationsship, but the first that really mattered to her) and losing this one special person hurt.
So, as my view on Ashley goes, she will have hardened somewhat and she will have buried herself in work, pursuing her career. But she still has her warm, gentle, romantic self inside her

In fact one reason (beside loving Ash) I like to post here in this thread is because it is almost completly free of spam, rubbish and nonsense posts. That makes it worth to put some thought into someones own postings as well.
To make this post Ash-related as well, what do you think it is about Ash's character, that gives her a supporting crowd as we see it here? It's quite interesting for me to question myself which of Ashleys features attract me to her, and its also interesting that - as far as I can guess from the postings made in this thread - she attracts a crowd of similar minded people.
To answer this question for me, I think I am mostly attracted by two things: First I view her as a very honest person. If she decides to stay with you, you can count on that. And second I love her poems. Not only the poems themselves, but also what they show me about her character. It shows a romantic heart, the way she recites them shows a great deal of sensibility and of course it also shows she is an educated individual, not just a well trained marine badass (which she also is). Actually, her poems give me the chance to look beyond the fact she's a well trained marine badass.
So, to through a bone at the crowd: which of Ash's features attract you most?
E: something off-topic but I have to mention it, as it kind of freaks me out: Everytime I make a post on this thread, I will re-read it after sending to see for typos, formatting and if my sentences make sense at all. Takes maybe one minute. Everytime this one minute is enough to put the Tali-thread on top again. The kind of fandom Tali gets is really frightening
E2: To be fair actually, I should not say "frightening", I should say "fascinating". What is it about Tali, that sparks such a crowd? Or is it just accidentially Tali and there is some group psychology going on? Or both? Would like to discuss this further, but for sure not here on the Ash thread, and maybe not even on any interwebs board. Made this another edit, to not further derail the discussion

back on topic...hmm...what i actually like about Ashley is that she is a great soldier...i don't see tough women in gaming enough...so i enjoy that part of Ashley...i also like her more sentimental side...shows that is more to her then military
what i don't like about her is her loyalty to the alliance.....those freaks will never like her or her familly yet after every time beeing put down by them she is still with them....i doubt much will change in ME3....she was sent on Horizon by ANderson from what i know...so the ALliance might not even chosen her or they thought they could get rid of her before getting to popular(fighting against Saren is sure to make u news)

I think it is also worth pointing out that slamming the fans of other characters is not terribly constructive. I am a huge fan of Tali and would have to say it is ridiculous to say that she really doesn't have that many fans or that Tali fans are "not real fans". Tali has very vocal supporters and detractors and more than enough of each. I want to see more support for Ash as she is also a wonderful character and I genuinely believe I can be a fan of both.

As for what attracted me to her, it's a mix of things. Her good looks obviously, but also her playful attitude. It made my Shep smile a lot, and her teasing of him always got him to laugh. Connecting with her and seeing that there is far more to her than simply a rough neck soldier. I was never a fan of poetry, but after hearing Ash speak those poems, I changed my view a little.

I am a huge fan of Ash. I really like her passion. When she commits to something she puts her whole self into it. This sometimes backfires on her as it has done with her difficulty accepting aliens and when she was confronted with a live Shepard. I think it can be hard for her to change gears due to that commitment, but also makes it more rewarding when she learns lessons and adjusts her perspective on things.

i didn't say all tali fans i said some fans are not real tali fans...i am not slamming the real fans....
on regards to the qualities of Ashley i like...forgot to add her love and loyalty to her familly...find it great that she always makes time for her sisters even with all the training she has and missions to attend...

I agree with this. There is no reason to slam hate at other fanbases of other characters, I like Tali too I just wasn't really up to romancing her. But yes I believe people can be a fan of both and indeed everyone, there's a lot of love to share around here.
And I agree, I think the hate for Tali fans is a little unjust, she has just as many fans and detractors as anyone else.
And finally yes, more support for Ashley is always appreciated, it's nice to see some support heading her way.

She's strong and willful and independant and one of the better examples of that that I've seen in a game.
She's got a sassy attitude and a real spark of personality about her that makes her fun to talk to.
Her interest in poetry and her spirituality give her quite a nice degree of depth.
Her flaws are believable and she can develop as a character and learn to see things in a whole new way. She's not perfect but she still feels very real.

I made a second edit to my previous post to more clearly point out, what I do find fascinating about the Tali fandom. Has nothing to do with Tali herself, I'm just amazed to see some group psychology internet phenomenon going on right in front of my eyes
Actually, Ash ruined any other romance option for me in ME2. For me the Ashley romance is the only one I can attach myself with. And it is the only one which is written with a pace that seemed right. For example only with Ash you could do some flirting and would get some joking responses. From there you could really feel a relation to evolve. With the other LI's it just felt rushed and not very deep. Ok, I give Tali an exception here, as you could imagine she was liking Shepard since ME1, but then again I wouldn't want to romance my little sister

Anyway, on-topic, the key thing that drew me to Ash originally was the tomboy attitude,.I looooove tomboys.
Her depth, looks, and hidden intellectualism just drew me in further after that.

Instead she just has occasional little flirting lines and obvious double-entendre's. Like the 'new spin for on the floor give me twenty' and the 'I'm a hellcat off the battlefield too, sleep tight Shepard'. It was all nice and it gave an idea of the sexual tension between them without making it the sole focal point of the dialogue.

Though I do hope something to challenge her faith comes up in Mass Effect 3. Would make for an interesting conversation. As long as it is done tastefully.

I do think she wasn't very serious in the beginning, just acting out her character when flirting with Shepard but eventually she got more and more attracted and involved with Shepard.
As I'm thinking about it right now, maybe her character was so believable for me, because I can not see her to be obviously tailor made for a certain customer base (something you could imply for e.g. Miranda with her more than obvious physical features). She kind of is just herself and I think that makes her outstanding.
Just take a look here, I found it quite funny: http://www.cracked.c...y-3872-bioware/
And, as stated above, I think there is a reason, why Ash is not mentioned as one of Bioware archetypical characters.

Yep you're right but try explaining that people who doesn't like her:?
*Edit*: also what i saw very early on in ME 1 was that you had to interact with Ashley every single time in order to get the most out of it and to actually work to get the romance going, on Liara's case well.....after you rescue her she almost immediatly falls for you which i don't like.

True, admittedly I still think Liara was very interesting and I can see why people would like her for her social awkwardness and such, for me there wasn't as much development and I prefer a tough chick who is confident and capable of teasing and quipping back at Shepard while also making sly flirts.
I liked Liara, but she just felt a little too damsel in distress for my tastes and I much preferred the way Ashley remained strong and independant while still showing an actual soft vulnerable side as well.
