You hit the nail on the head, V-rex. Her flirting was very believable and gave the whole romance a feeling of development, something all other romances are missing in my point of view.
I do think she wasn't very serious in the beginning, just acting out her character when flirting with Shepard but eventually she got more and more attracted and involved with Shepard.
As I'm thinking about it right now, maybe her character was so believable for me, because I can not see her to be obviously tailor made for a certain customer base (something you could imply for e.g. Miranda with her more than obvious physical features). She kind of is just herself and I think that makes her outstanding.
Just take a look here, I found it quite funny: http://www.cracked.c...y-3872-bioware/
And, as stated above, I think there is a reason, why Ash is not mentioned as one of Bioware archetypical characters.
Goodness, that article's funny.
But back to Ash, I agree with a lot of what people have been saying. Her honesty, up-frontness, deep loyalties to family and responsibility are all things that make her great. But it's her human flaws and self-determined strength of character that really make her so believable as a person to me.

Incidently for the things about Ashley I love:
She's strong and willful and independant and one of the better examples of that that I've seen in a game.
She's got a sassy attitude and a real spark of personality about her that makes her fun to talk to.
Her interest in poetry and her spirituality give her quite a nice degree of depth.
Her flaws are believable and she can develop as a character and learn to see things in a whole new way. She's not perfect but she still feels very real.
Yep you're right but try explaining that people who doesn't like her:?
*Edit*: also what i saw very early on in ME 1 was that you had to interact with Ashley every single time in order to get the most out of it and to actually work to get the romance going, on Liara's case well.....after you rescue her she almost immediatly falls for you which i don't like.
Ashley requires more effort, but I think something is always more rewarding if effort is put into it, personal relationships especially. It wouldn't feel right at all if if all you had to do was help her out on Eden Prime (yes, help her out, not "save" her) and suddenly she simply has to leap into bed with you or she will live the rest of her life unfulfilled.

okay..this is clearly discrimination against the virmire survivor...where are Ash and Kaidan in that poll ?but they do say it must be a char from ME2...one mighy wonder what Liara is doing there then
Also No Ash No Money.

I am a huge fan of Ash. I really like her passion. When she commits to something she puts her whole self into it. This sometimes backfires on her as it has done with her difficulty accepting aliens and when she was confronted with a live Shepard. I think it can be hard for her to change gears due to that commitment, but also makes it more rewarding when she learns lessons and adjusts her perspective on things.
Before we drift too far off-topic, ReluctantMind let me say you have some good observations.

Ah yes. "Virmire Survivors" ..... BioWare has repeatedly dismissed them.
malevolente: I hope I'm not spoiling anything for anyone, but the devs have stated that all squadmates (and Shepard) can die at the end of ME2. Or everyone can survive. And given that Ashley or Kaidan could die in ME, wouldn't that make having a squad in ME3 of any of the squadmates from both games (except Liara) difficult? Are you still considering this option, or is an entirely new squad likely to be present in ME3? I'm sure that putting ME2 and ME squadmates on the backburner for the final installment of...
Casey Hudson: Yes, it's definitely difficult to continue the fiction when we allow major characters to be **bleep**ed off by player actions. But, that's part of the fun, and the impact of major consequences. One reason that the love interests were not recruitable in ME2 (but are still part of the story) is that they need to be around for the ongoing story in ME3.
