Seeing how I am being somewhat nice today (yea right.) I got an update image from IW with Ashley and Shepard and have posted it to the OP.

Come on, V.V. There are plenty of haters, but there are plenty more people who love Ash, we are just silent for the most part, haters are always louder than the fans, thats the same for every community of fans on here it seems..

Ash may not be the most popular character, but she is nowhere near being one of the least popular characters. Most people regardless if they like or dislike Ash seem to admit she is one of the better developed characters. There are plenty of positive and admirable traits to her, aswell as flaws that ironicly having these flaws makes her perfect, as to be a realistic character they MUST have flaws aswell as the positives.

The haters who go ''racist'' and what not are just trolls, and there's no need paying any attention to them, as they couldn't take the time to actually pay attention to the character, they dont look into the character and see what each thng that the character says means, not bothering to find deeper meaning and understanding, instead they become reckless, and judgemental in there obveously shallow opinions.

I think we shouldn't always expect a nasty reaction, there is always someone who will be immature and troll, but there is always someone else who will appreciate us sharing ower opinions, regardless if they agree or not. And there are the other fans who will open up more and show there love for the character if they notice someone else has, thats what I love about this thread and ower groups, but we shouldn't be silent becuase of trolls, we gotta let Bioware know how popular Ash is, and the answer is very. Heck, even the hate is better than people calling her boring, Ash has proven to be never boring to the fans, if they love or hate her, it's always becuase of her opinions, never becuase she bored someone.

I just hope Bioware dont ruin her character, seeing as the dev who wrote her has left Bioware

See, that I don't get.  Even with Superman, or Beauty & the Beast...you're dating outside your species.  It's like, would you date a talking squirrel?

To keep this on-topic, Ash raises this point herself if you romance both her and Liara and they confront you.  What say you guys?  Should being two different speicies be a dealbreaker?  I say yes.

I say no.  The dealbreaker should be that person simply isn't Ash.

I'll never understand people who call Ash a "bible-thumping racist". Apparently even mentioning that you are
religious qualifies as "bible-thumping".  As far as I can tell Ashley brings up her religion about once or twice in the game. And yet people act like she is a fanatic.

Just because she doesn't instantly warm up to the aliens on board doesn't mean she's racist. I could think of people who would respond a lot more violently. Considering she's never served with them before, her attitude isn't really that surprising. And besides, you can persuade her attitude towards aliens anyway.

You left someone you claimed was a racist for someone who openly works for one of humanity's most anti-alien movements. Good job, dude. (Though again, like Ash, it's possible to see Miranda develop out of that and her arc was pretty good.)

Back on topic, I think the different species thing has degrees for me. Obviously Asari are so human-like in appearance that most people wouldn't think twice. Any of the other species begin to make it a little less feasible.

1. Ashley actually makes statements that indicate that she could harbor xenophobic tendencies. Miranda does not say anything that indicates she harbors these sentiments.

2. Cerberus is not anti-alien, it's pro-humanity.

For the record, I don't think Ashley or Miranda are xenophobic. I do think, however, you could probably make a better case for Ashley being xenophobic than a case that Miranda is xenophobic.

Ashley is not xenophobic. She simply understands how things work, and she protects her interests accordingly.

Havin travelled around the world I remember how I felt the first time I landed in Africa. It was in Conakry, Guinea. That was in 1999, I was about 35. I was by myself, knew no one there, was expected to set up an exploration program on a property located 14 hours drive out into the back country (close to the border with Mali). I could speak French while in Conakry, then spent the next four months among the malinke people speaking through interpreters.

I grew up in a city that's unilingual francophone and is almost unicultural french-canadian. Had I grown up in a more multicultural city, such as New-York or Paramaribo, I might have adjusted quickly to the strange looking/sounding people I was dropped amongst. As things were, I felt more than a little intimidated... not by the people as persons, but by the overwhelming "foreigness" of it all.

That was me, an average human, being dropped among another human culture, different from my own.

Colonists like Ash are striking out for themselves where the other cultures are not even human... Some aliens don't even look remotely human, being reminiscent of felines, canines or even lizards. Would I have trouble telling some aliens apart from some animals? I rather think so, much to my embarassment. Would I trust an elcor cabbie more (or less) than a human one? I guess it would depend on the confidence I have in that "universal translator" that makes everyone in ME sound like they learned English in the USA... but the answer is no more or less than any other cabbie. Some are wonderful human beings, some are swindlers. You can't judge an individual by his/her race or his/her career choice (unless it's some sort of criminal activity ).

I believe most people who criticise Ash for her xenophobia do not even know what it feels like. They are so clueless it's not even funny. Xenophobia is not something you have control over and it's certainly not racism. Racism is a value judgement, an opinion you have that the worth/quality of individual is determined by race (or species, in ME's case). Is Ash xenophobic? Yes, and she's got every right to be. Humanity is competing against all other species out there; in peaceful and productive ways with some (the Council Space ones), hostile and destructive with others (Reapers, Collectors, the Batarian Hegemony). Has Ash shown any indication that her opinion of an individual alien might be limited to its species and not open to re-evaluation? None whatsoever.

I empathize with Ashley's character, as it resonates with my own personal experiences. I show the same respect to any human being, regardless of how intimidating or overhelming his/her culture might feel when I'm thrown into it. I've felt xenophobia first hand, and I can garantee you I'm no racist.
