I heard the
stupidest comment in regards to the Ashley/Wrex on Virmire topic on
youtube, basically he said that Ashley was like a 'racist cop who shoots
a black guy for 'looking suspicious'.
I just love the logic, or lack thereof, in this context. Because I think when someone is pointing a gun directly
at someone's face, and has refused to be talked down and is now talking
to them (gun still raised) in an angry and threatening manner... it's a
lot more than just 'looking suspicious'.
I know youtube
commentors have a notorious lack of intelligence or logic (or personal
hygiene) when Ashley Hate starts up but that one just pushes to beyond
the realm of the ridiculous.
Also, while I'm here:
I am [i]seriously[/i[ lovin' this picture.
Agreed.
Lol, they think Ash is caucasian? She was mixed race the last time I checked. ../../../images/forum/emoticons/joyful.png
Love the picture.
Oh man, the whole mess with Wrex...that simply cannot be won. I love Wrex, and he's universally liked, so that puts Ashley in a difficult place. In retrospect, it almost seems a disservice to her considering who beloved he is.
Still...can people really be that mad about it? Can they really only focus their anger at her? They weren't frustrated they couldn't get enough charm/intimidate points after 20+ hours of gameplay?
Seriously, did no one lose Wrex thinking, "That's what I get for not picking a side!", because that's what it seems like to me. Wrex wouldn't want to be working with some fickle pansy anyway. On top of that, Shepard was in charge, ALL of the characters were wary of Wrex at the time, and Ashley was instructed to act on his hostility.
As for her looking caucasian...it's a very lovely picture, and that's one of the better depictions of her features. I've actually seen a few in which she was made...whiter. In fact, sometimes Kaidan would be the more mixed looking one, which I found odd as I always assumed him to be white...maybe because of the Elvis hair.
Not that I'm all that picky, I'm happy to see her depicted in fanart in a positive way, so if her skin tone's not exactly right, not a huge deal. Especially since we can't be totally sure what her genealogical origins are. Doesn't help that she has the whitest name ever.

I believe most people who criticise Ash for her xenophobia do not even know what it feels like. They are so clueless it's not even funny. Xenophobia is not something you have control over and it's certainly not racism. Racism is a value judgement, an opinion you have that the worth/quality of individual is determined by race (or species, in ME's case). Is Ash xenophobic? Yes, and she's got every right to be. Humanity is competing against all other species out there; in peaceful and productive ways with some (the Council Space ones), hostile and destructive with others (Reapers, Collectors, the Batarian Hegemony). Has Ash shown any indication that her opinion of an individual alien might be limited to its species and not open to re-evaluation? None whatsoever.
I empathize with Ashley's character, as it resonates with my own personal experiences. I show the same respect to any human being, regardless of how intimidating or overhelming his/her culture might feel when I'm thrown into it. I've felt xenophobia first hand, and I can garantee you I'm no racist.
That is some excellent testament.
Some people seem to claim her as racist as though...it somehow elavates them. As though if they had lived in a different time, they'd be the ones to rise up and change things. But them dismissing her as a racist is, ironically, an act of predjudice.
Before I even got the game, I assumed she would beat me over the head with racism. I was half expecting that to be her entire personality. But I was wrong. Her feelings towards aliens, which I felt were reasonable, did not make up her entire identity. Unfortunately, things like family values, religion, and classic American poetry are...not the biggest crowd pleasers.
But yeah, there's...not a whole lot can be done. You can chose to give these characters a chance or you can toss them aside and assume the worst. I will continue to support Ash...she may not be the absolute least liked character, but I believe she needs more.

Kimberley Brooks was also a additional voice (Random npc) in KOTOR, im so glad Bioware realised her potential (as well as many other developes, just look at how many games she has been in) and gave her a huge role in Mass Effect. I couldn't imagine Ashley Williams being voiced so well by any other Voice actress, not after hearing Brooks voice Ash.

They use Kim Brooks for a lot of random npc stuff. Just during my recent ME2 playthrough I was noticing her all over the place. She has a certain way she says her "s" and "t" sounds that gives her away.

There are worse in the games, but I don't think it counts as prejudice to see her as one. Overemphasizing part of her personality, maybe.

Maybe. If there's anything I've learned from the fandoms I've involved myself in, it's that people will exaggerate things.
It's not the same as judging another based on a few preconceptions in real life, obviously, but it still seems unfair to the character. Especially since this company as a whole seems to do solid work with character development, it's hypocritical to praise Bioware for the work they do wile simultaneously thrashing one character because her interests may be conflicting with the player.
Just a few pages ago the it was brought up that writer for Ashley in the first game had discussed how his intentions for her seemed lost on a lot of players. It was intended that she have a more rational point of view, not exactly noble, but a practical idea of self preservation.
Maybe it means he did not do the best job. I liked what the writer did, and it's upsetting to know the effort he put into it, only to see someone carelessly dismiss her as "that racist b*tch" a moment later. And it seems a little backwards to me, to see someone as racist and be hostile about it. If a person condemns someone for being racist and does nohing else about it, and without any understanding as to why that person thinks that way, is the condemner really any better? Especially in a situation like this where it can most certainly be...maybe not quite fixed, but helped.
If the idea of racism is that big a concern to you, it seems more sensible to try and understand their point of view and, if applicable, help remedy those issues. As is the case with Ashley...more so with a male, sadly, but I like to think a female Shepard can still help her out.
So I guess you could say...I take offense not because ofthe supposed racism, but because I well developed character is often treated like a static caricature. And that's not fair. She deserves as much consideration as any fan would give Wrex or Garrus or Tali or Joker. But as I said, exaggerating is what fans often do, and I need to just accept that.

I think every Shepard, regardless of who they kept alive and what their relationship with that survivor is, should be thinking that to themselves! I know it's probably only been a few weeks to Shepard, but the VS practically watched them die! Show a little grace.

Reasons people have used to justify there belief that Ash is xenophobic 1) Ash doesn't immediately trust Wrex/Garrus even though at the time of this dialogue the player certainly shouldn't have unconditional trust in either one of them. Wrex is a krogan well known for there unpredictability, and general inability to work with others. Garrus is a Turian, Turians and Humans don't like each other, in my opinion trusting Garrus right of the bat, wouldn't be much different than an American trusting a Russian or vice versa, if this was taking place during the Cold War, doesn't seem very logical. Ash does make that dogs/bears analogy(epic fail), which maybe wouldn't be the best way of putting it, but hey sometimes what I mean to say and what I do say aren't the same, sorry. Fanboys analyse there fav character, there fav character will inevitably say something they may not agree with, but lets take it upon ourselves to decide that, that one line was out of context, they didn't mean it like that. Also, we will not give Ash that same benefit of doubt. 2) Ash killed my boy Wrex on Virmire, cuz I was such a **** and couldn't do it myself. So this is Ashley's fault, cuz I couldn't be bothered to put a few points in either speech skill, what a dumb reason to hate a character. 3) Justify there love of an inferior character (Liara), by bashing the only other romance for Manshep. 4) I'll give them this, poetry is either A) boring or
In closing even if Ash is xenophobic, she is capable of change, you know this thing called character development its not a bad thing.

I personally like Jack just as much as Ashley, and lately I found my love of Ash waning, not sure if it was because of the writers failure, the fact that the Jackolytes are such an insightful bunch(brainwashing me), or maybe I'm just starting to crack under all the Ash hate on these forums. I'm kinda like Ashley in that I find other people say what I mean better than I do, which is why I rarely post, and I wasn't going to post here until I said to myself, "F*** the haters I'm gonna show my support." The reason I'm in such a foul mood is because recently I'm was going through the "Jack thread" archives as it were, and someone I respect the hell out of played the Ash is a racist card, I would of thought that was beneath him/her but I guess not, for all I now it could of been meant as a joke spoofing the Ash haters. Either way it doesn't change the fact that most people for a variety of reason, some better than others, consider Ash racists.

In closing even if Ash is xenophobic, she is capable of change, you know this thing called character development its not a bad thing.
As I have said before (I think on the last page) Ashley isn't that hated, Jack is actually more hated than Ash, although I like Jack too.
The problem is that the haters go through too much trouble just to state there dislike for the character, or hatred for there fanbase. I assure you there are more people who like Ash than dont like her. The haters are always louder than the fans. Look at Tali, she is one of the most hated characters in Mass effect, but she is also the most popular LI.
Dont take any notice of haters, there obveously just a bunch of immature idiots, who post nonsense just to ****** people off.
