Ashley is only mildly speciesist and it's highly explicable, but that doesn't make it completely nonexistent. As you can see from conversations regarding the First Contact War and a few other things, she has issues with them that go beyond national security concerns, a fact highlighted by her contrast with Kaidan.
Yeah, it's a character flaw, and we've all got 'em.

This DLC story would take place either after your investigation inside the Collector Ship that the Illusive Man informs you about, or after the main story.
You as Commander Shepard and Virmire survivor (Kaiden or Ashley) both agree to meet up on a newly built space station. The station is called "The Destiny Star", which houses a restuarant, night club and hotel. (You get to choose whether to meet at the club or the restaurant of The Desiny Star).
This is where you both make amends after the last row on Horizon. This is also where a bunch of extremist take over The Destiny Star.
As Commander Shepard you managed not to be taken hostage - probably because you were coming back from the Ladies or Gents restroom only to discover your former crew member and other innocents from the club or restuarant are being held at gun point by the extremists. You probably wondering why Shepard doesn't alert the Alliance or security for help? Well, for arguement sake - the extremists jam the stations communication.
Wearing formal gear and carrying no weapons, your first task would be to stealth your way around the station securing equipment. After that you begin to take back The Destiny Star, saving the hostages and Kaiden/Ashley.
As part of finishing this DLC, you would get free accesss anywhere on The Destiny Star. This is where you can rekindle your romance (if you persued one with Kaiden or Ashley on ME1) or bring your ME2 love interest on a date. Or if you are a single Shep, you could still bring a party member to check out the night club. Hopefully in there... you get to be a better dancer! :0)

If Bioware haven't yet come up with an DLC involving your former crew member and Virmire survivor...then here is my idea.
Not bad. I like the idea of having an extra nightclub type location to visit, or even just another starbase or a pleasure planet or something with a range of shops, entertainment, etc. Personally I feel that ME2's version of the Citadel is kind of "meh."
If at all possible, though, I think I'd like to see VS DLC deal with unresolved existing plot or subplot elements. Lair of the Shadowbroker left a lot of unresolved questions about Cerberus and the Alliance that could maybe be addressed, for example. Or, maybe they could develop another mission dealing with the info from Kenji's Greybox, with the idea being that the VS is the one sent to secure the info. Not everyone has Kasumi, yes, but she could be automatically included with the VS DLC for people who do not have her, and the VS DLC mission could maybe only pop up after finishing both Kasumi's loyalty mission and Horizon.
Another idea - if you wanted to stick with your general outline - that extremist leader from Bring Down the Sky (Balak I think his name is?) is still out there in my canon Shep's playthrough, and Shepard wouldn't mind a chance to take him down once and for all. Of course, the problem there would be that there are plenty of people who offed him when they had the chance and just let the hostages die...

I personally like Jack just as much as Ashley, and lately I found my love of Ash waning, not sure if it was because of the writers failure, the fact that the Jackolytes are such an insightful bunch(brainwashing me), or maybe I'm just starting to crack under all the Ash hate on these forums. I'm kinda like Ashley in that I find other people say what I mean better than I do, which is why I rarely post, and I wasn't going to post here until I said to myself, "F*** the haters I'm gonna show my support." The reason I'm in such a foul mood is because recently I'm was going through the "Jack thread" archives as it were, and someone I respect the hell out of played the Ash is a racist card, I would of thought that was beneath him/her but I guess not, for all I now it could of been meant as a joke spoofing the Ash haters. Either way it doesn't change the fact that most people for a variety of reason, some better than others, consider Ash racists.
Reasons people have used to justify there belief that Ash is xenophobic 1) Ash doesn't immediately trust Wrex/Garrus even though at the time of this dialogue the player certainly shouldn't have unconditional trust in either one of them. Wrex is a krogan well known for there unpredictability, and general inability to work with others. Garrus is a Turian, Turians and Humans don't like each other, in my opinion trusting Garrus right of the bat, wouldn't be much different than an American trusting a Russian or vice versa, if this was taking place during the Cold War, doesn't seem very logical. Ash does make that dogs/bears analogy(epic fail), which maybe wouldn't be the best way of putting it, but hey sometimes what I mean to say and what I do say aren't the same, sorry. Fanboys analyse there fav character, there fav character will inevitably say something they may not agree with, but lets take it upon ourselves to decide that, that one line was out of context, they didn't mean it like that. Also, we will not give Ash that same benefit of doubt. 2) Ash killed my boy Wrex on Virmire, cuz I was such a **** and couldn't do it myself. So this is Ashley's fault, cuz I couldn't be bothered to put a few points in either speech skill, what a dumb reason to hate a character. 3) Justify there love of an inferior character (Liara), by bashing the only other romance for Manshep. 4) I'll give them this, poetry is either A) boring orout of place for Ash, but there are worse flaws for someone to have, like Liara for instance who is so damn boring all the time, but she's a hot alien so you cares.
In closing even if Ash is xenophobic, she is capable of change, you know this thing called character development its not a bad thing.
As I have said before (I think on the last page) Ashley isn't that hated, Jack is actually more hated than Ash, although I like Jack too.
The problem is that the haters go through too much trouble just to state there dislike for the character, or hatred for there fanbase. I assure you there are more people who like Ash than dont like her. The haters are always louder than the fans. Look at Tali, she is one of the most hated characters in Mass effect, but she is also the most popular LI.
Dont take any notice of haters, there obveously just a bunch of immature idiots, who post nonsense just to ****** people off.
Is Jack more hated? It's hard for me to gauge it...I had kind of figured hatred of Ash was more...concentrated. I mean, Jack can be off-putting, but...well, she never said anything to or about the fan favorites.
For what it's worth, General, Jack grew on me. If I ever make another (a fourth) Shepard, I'll most likely romance her with that one. I just hope that whenever Ash makes her comeback, what you originally liked about her will be strengthened.
Tali has a lot of hate, too? I figued some people hated her ironically...I mean, knowing he fandom has creepy tendences is deterring, but...man, sometimes girls just can't catch a break.
I liked the poetry, though. Maybe her excerpt could have been a little shorter, but I like that it wasn't so...typical. Like she wasn't a tough soldier but also an artist. Instead, she used the words of others to express feelings she struggled with.
And for the dog/bear thing...I really just figured it was about survival. I did not think much about who was the bear and who was the dog. I just knew she was trying to make the point of self preservation. When she said, "much as you love your dog, it isn't human", I'm thinking that's where people draw the conclusion that Ash must think aliens lesser. That could be tied in with the poetry, actually. Those were her own words, and she struggled with them. She was hesitant to even tell Shepard of her uneasiness with Garrus and Wrex around the ship. She's simply not the eloquent type, and that's okay.

Counterpoint: You ordered her to be
ready to do that and don't tell me she fired too many time because we
all know a krogan's health goes back up to half or more as soon as they
hit the ground. So you don't want your people following your orders?
Besides, she's concerned for her commander/boyfriend. And quite
frankly, if you had done Wrex's loyalty mission you wouldn't have this
problem. Or if you had enough charm/intimidate points you wouldn't have
a problem. Don't blame Ash for your inequities. A failure to plan on
your part does not constitute a failure for her. Her letting a 2 ton
Krogan charge and kill her CO however, probably would. But, who knows?
Joker got away with killing the boss. Maybe people would have liked
her better if all the player saw during that scene was Wrex starting to
glow blue and then, "Critical Mission Failure."
Thank you! Seriously, this is a game about choice! How do so few people not realize it's their own damn fault? OMG, you mean bad things can happen in this game? Did none of them watch the scene prior and think "Oh, this could end badly, I should be really careful!"? Besides, Wrex is too awesome to stay around with some little b*tch who can't pick a side. And on top of THAT, all the other team mates showed distrust. They were all thinking it, she was the only one that did anything about it.
I have never once gotten that scene, and often I've had a decent chunk of both alignment points. It's not Ashley's fault you suck.

Andyeah, sometimes it seems like...if a female character isn't blatantly "hot" she'll either be hated or ignored. Alien characters would be exempt, I think, for their, well..."exotic edge".
I mean, Ashley's reasonably attractive--which, truthfully, is a part of why I like her--but in video games, that's not enough, especially given her personality.

Although they forgot to add the other common title they give female characters:
"Love Interest."
See also:
"Damsel in Distress."
See also:
"Perfected girlfriend Ideal as brought forth by socially awkward nerds."
... Although I shouldn't really make fun. Anyway I found a rather pretty Ash picture on Deviant Art and I figured I'd share it, it's just a screenshot but it still counts:

Which is sad, given that I think her personality is one of the most attractive things about her.
I think she's more than reasonably attractive on the physical side of things. But I think there's something especially attractive about a woman who knows how to take charge of a situation and who is willing to express her opinion.

I like the idea that it would be after tackling the Collector Ship because then sufficient time would've passed. What's the point of having DLC if it can take place right after Horizon? IMO.

I don't know who shall I choose with my canon in next DLC or ME3; Tali or Ashley.
Tali is my 2nd favorite character( Legion is 1st) but I love Ashley a lot too.
I do have Shep loyal to her but it will be tough choice for me anyway.
