I've yet to find a video showing the interactive comic in which shepard choses Ash (or Kaiden), but based on what i did see, it's...a bit disheartening.
I'm pretty optimistic myself...just with extreme caution.
I want to be optimistic about Ash and Kaidan.
The thing is, even if they had planned something good for the VS, I'm not convinced that Bioware is above changing their plans.
I understand that Bioware gave Garrus and Tali larger roles in ME2 than they had planned due to fan demand. If that's the case, what's to keep them from minimizing the role of the VS because Bioware thinks that Ash/Kaidan aren't well liked?
Again, I want to be optimistic - but I worry.

Yeah, but Miranada runs around in skin tight clothing to show off her... assets. This appeals to the all important 14 year old male demographic.
Also, as far as the newb players are concerned, Cerberus is awesome, don't ya know?

True, Garrus was never intended to be associated with romance and fandom pleas changed that. However, if Bioware is willing to...bend for fans, why can't they...adjust Ashley and Kaiden? Liara, for instance, isn't everyone's favorite, but from what I've seen, LoTSB converted a lot of previous haters.
...Of course, that leaves the question of whether or not that would be good for those of us who liked Ash to begin with. I'm assuming nobody wants Ashley to change much. Not out of the blue, anyway.
Surely, though, there must be a point. It's their creation and it would be a mess if they listened to every thing the fans cried for. It's one thing to change the inventory system or get rid of the vehicles, but reduce the role of a character because fans don't appreciate her? Surely Ash isn't there just because someone wanted a soldier girl just hanging around. The romances are subplots and they don't interfere with the main story, to downgrade a primary character's role seems...wrong.

(I suppose it didn't help that he always fell in the flames on Virmire. The first time I played ME1, I knew a squadmate was supposed to die, but I didn't know how, so when they asked me to pick someone to go with the salarians, I was like, "Oh well, so long Kaidan." And then the game was like "Ash will stay with the bomb now, while you rescue Kaidan..." I went back and sent Ash with the salarians because I thought that would save her! Oh first ME1 run. So much I didn't know...)

Actually, I was an Ashley fan who didn't really like Kaidan. It wasn't until I started forcing myself to lurk on the KAST and try to understand his character that I came to appreciate him.

And you're a girl, too? Wow, what a rare find
...Seriously, I would have thought Ash would have a substantial female following, but...well, I've been wrong before. Shame, really. But she had some uneasiness about Garrus and wrex that did not even translate into rudeness or hostility towards them, and apparently she went too far. Goodness help her if she joins the SR-2 and isn't immediately comfortable with Thane or else the entire female demographic will hate her forever! XD
I think I actually sacrificed Ashley first...but then, as the same Shepard, saved her in a second playthrough. I'm not sure where exactly I realized I liked her more...might have been the talk about her reading poetry to her father's grave. Smart, sassy and soulful--all things I like.
But...I did come to like Kaiden more as well, and eventually I made a Shepard just for him. I just...can't bring myself to dislike someone so nice.
And yes, ADLegend, it is quite a shame they had to die. It took a while, but I came to care for them both. It makes more an intense moment--as opposed to chosing between characters you care nothing for--but it...breaks my heart. Paragon or Renegade, I always end by telling the...lost one I'm sorry, and they always understand...

That 'did any male Shepard kill off Ashley' thread just necroed itself back into existence. It amazes me how a thread that is blatant character hate, filled with blatant character bashing of Ashley to a blatantly extreme degree can get to be twenty one pages long, but one about Tali barely makes it to four.
So unfair, in any case I'm going to be avoiding the Mass Effect 1 section of the forums for a while, lest the anger within me unleash an explosive wall of text that begins a giant flamewar.
So I'm just going to stay here and remind myself that this thread was made much earlier last year when all the inbred trolls were still backward and primitive and continue to believe that with all these recent threads about how Ashley isn't racist or how lots more people seem to be on our side and are able to discuss the character with more fairness and respect, that the world is now more enlightened and joyous.
A man can dream at least.

Just report it for thread necromancy, that's what I just did. A mod usually locks a thread someone replies in that hasn't had a reply in months before.

There didn't seem to be an option on the list for old threads being brought up. So I considered just writing out my opinion on it but then it didn't send because apparently you need to select an option, but the closest I could find was either 'hate speech' or 'violent/vulgar content' and as much as I despise all the Ashley hate that hangs around like a bad smell on these forums I didn't think it fits either catergory.
Plus, I reckon it might annoy the mods a bit, so I might just give it a pass and just ignore it. They'll probably notice it themselves, after all the second to last post was five months old, pretty obvious necro.
Frankly I just want it out of my sight, so if I can just avoid the thread's general area for a few days until someone else reports it and it gets locked, I should be fine. Besides we have five hundred and thirty three Ash fans in our group, that at least helps to remind me that I'm not alone.
In any case, back to the topic at hand:

I know there're quite a few of us over in the KAST, but I suppose I expected that there would be more female fans who were vocal about their appreciation for her elsewhere. It just seems strange to me for some reason. She's an incredible character. <3

Yeah, I had a dream once where it was actually *released*, although it had Tyrian-age graphics. But at this point I'd *take* a side-scroller.

I had a dream about it too once, I dreamed that there was a DLC announced, made, released and was very popular and that Ashley was the poster of it and there were all these people buying it over Xbox Live. I remember it had something to do with a prothean beacon and I remember there was a romance scene between Shepard and Ash. I remember thinking that all my hopes were satisfied and I could enjoy Mass Effect as much as everyone else.
But I also remember actually thinking to myself, while dreaming, that somehow the time between being released ad becoming very popular felt almost instantanious and that something about this seemed unrealistic.
Just before I woke up my last semi concious thought was:
"Man, this better not be a dream."
Then I woke up. So yes, there was a lot of brooding for the rest of the morning.

I think it's because Tali only developed a hatedom at all thanks to her huge number of fans, whereas Ashley's hatedom is based on her actions (however misinterpreted they might be).

I'd be happy to meet female Mass Effect fans, period. This thread and the KAST proves that they exist, but I don't ever seem to run into them in the "real world."
On the subject of Ash: If they do put together a VS DLC, I wonder how it will be designed.
The thing is... I understand that the Liara DLC was designed so that her abilities (wicked biotics that can easily toss people off of tall buildings) were useful. The problem we run into with a VS DLC is that you'd need a level that's well made for either Kaidan or Ash, depending on who survived. And they're two different people with very different skills.
Any thoughts about how such a DLC could be designed?
