Keep in mind, we know for a fact that TIM has been releasing rumors about Shepard working for Cerberus.

We do know that there were rumors linking Shepard to the colony attacks.  The thing is, we don't know what rumors TIM has been creating beyond that, or how long he's been releasing them.

TIM could have been releasing rumors about Shepard being alive and involved in all sorts of horrible, Cerberus backed incidents since the day Cerberus obtained his body.  I think this would have served TIM's purposes, as when Shepard turned up alive, it would have made the rumors seem like they could be true - and having all that stuff out there almost certainly would have alienated him from his allies in the Alliance.  Thus forcing him into a position where he has to work with TIM.

If there are a lot of nasty, long standing rumors out there, it could explain why Ash is so quick to call him a traitor.  My guess is that she would have ignored most of the rumors, but the second she saw Shepard show up on Horizon - and with Cerberus squaddies - it likely made her wonder about just how many of those rumors are true.

Remember, Ash always has been someone who speaks with her heart, even if it means not thinking through what her reactions could mean for her career or for her friends/loved ones.  If you want an example, look at how she reacts to that Terra Firma dipwad on the Citadel.

@DWH: You make a good point. I suppose I've always just assumed that the Cerberus rumors about Shepard were more about his being alive than anything more particular.

Hey people. Long term Ashley fan here, with a minor query.I believe there's a dialogue difference on Horizon, where Ashley only says "You betrayed the alliance. You betrayed me." if you romanced her? I've checked a few youtube vids, and it certainly seems that way around. In other words - she only calls you a traitor *if* you romanced her. (It would make a certain amount of sense - her feelings being that much stronger making her that much more angry.)
Is anyone able to check this? I'm in college at the moment, and have NO way of checking it myself until at least March.

If you don't romance Ash, when you see her on Horizon she doesn't specifically call Shep a traitor.  Instead of a hug you get a hand shake and instead of calling him a traitor she says
"you turned your back on everything we stood for".  the rest is pretty much the same.

I'm doing another playthrough of ME1, and let me just say - Ash really rocks if you max her out on assault rifle, fitness, armor, and soldier.

I played through Pinnacle Station with her the other day, and it wasn't nearly as hard I remembered. With her and a biotic power maxed out Liara, we breezed through all of the missions and finished the final mission on the first try.

This. my shep was an adept so all I had to do was use lift, set Ash up with an AR or SR and use the weapon talents and holograms were dying everywhere!!!

It's been a little while since I last wrote here in the Ashley thread, because of work and little free time. I've just made a new video dedicated to Ashley & Shepard, and I want to share with you all. Hope you like it!

People see her realist foreign policy views and her general distrust of/lack of familiarity with aliens, and accuse her of racism. The dog/bear comment is part of it, but only a part.  It's also because she's wary of allowing aliens full access to the ship, the "I can't tell the aliens from the animals" comment on the Presidium, and so forth.  A number of people have admitted that they stop talking to her altogether after she first raises concerns about giving aliens full access to the Normandy, which means they miss out on everything else her character has to offer.

There are a range of other issues, too.

Some people choose to hate her because she's religious.  Even though she isn't "in your face" about it, and talks about it maybe once in the entire series so far, they accuse her of trying to "shove religion down their throat."  I've even seen at least one case of this justification for hating her get mixed with the first one, with someone claiming that Ash is some sort of fundamentalist with a religion that "compels her to hate aliens," and that she "likes to kill aliens because they're not made in the image of her God," even though there's absolutely no evidence of this in any of the games.

Some people hate her because they claim she "betrayed" Shepard on Horizon, by refusing to go with him.  Or, they feel that Ash (and/or the Alliance in general) is too holier than thou when it comes to Cerberus, and they hate Ash over that.  I understand that a disturbing number of Ash hate fics revolve around Shepard killing Ash, or Shepard's ME2 love interest killing Ash, to "get even" for Horizon.

Some people hate her simply because they think she's "ugly."  There was an entire thread a few weeks back based around the argument that "Ashley Williams could be hotter."

If you stick around the forums long enough, you'll see all of these justifications for hating Ash, if not more.  Personally, I feel it boils down, in part, to a large segment of players who are incapable of handing the idea of a strong woman, with her own opinions, unless that woman also feels compelled to make up for it by shoving her behind into tight pants and waving it in front of your face the entire game.  I also feel that it is, in part, due to a large number of players who have only played ME2, and feel that they're an "expert" on Ashley Williams based on the 3 minutes we get to see her on Horizon. 

I expect it might get worse, now that the PS3 version is out and there are going to be plenty of new Mass Effect players who never got to experience Ash in ME1.
