I tried it once than I heard the sad music that plays after Virmire and I immedeately reloaded the save.
My maleShepard felt so empty inside

I've tried to not romance her, really, but I just can't - everytime I see her, I just have to initiate the romance ... and once I go down that slope. She's unbelievably engaging, and she is truly the spark, that extra something special, that made the entire ME experience as amazing and impressive as it was to me.

Sorry to the Kaidan fans .... but it's never been a choice for me. I can't finish a fem!Shep playthrough because of the lack of the Ash romance. I like Kaidan, and I'd save him if I could, but between the two ... well, Ash is the only LI in ME1, as far as I'm concerned. I had to start a new game in ME2 in order to romance Jack - I couldn't go a single playthrough of ME1, even one meant to be a single Shep, without romancing a certain Chief. (I'm convinced that she's a witch. ^^)
I used to feel that way about Ash. she grew on me, but I couldn't imagine sacrificing Kaidan. but the thing is, Ash deserves to live at least in some of my play throughs, so I have her alive in 2 (one of them being faithful romance and the other - best friend to femshep sort of situation and that one was super tough to do :/). it sucked so much to do (and it took some effort and overwriting the save almost right away), I'm sure you have a pretty good idea, but I like Ash too much to not ever see her in ME3. Virmire is my absolute least favorite part of the entire franchise, because we have absolutely no way of saving both

Glad to hear I'm not alone - and you obviously have good taste!

My sentiments exactly, no matter how many playthroughs I did where I said:
"Right, this time I'll romance Liara."
The second Ashley showed up on screen I just felt... pulled towards her. Like her romance was a planet and I was getting drawn towards her by pure gravity alone. I could never bring myself to go after Liara, the story just seemed to come together so perfectly when I romanced Ash.
After a while romancing Ashley became a 'given', like it was always going to happen and was always part of the plan to romance Ash.
I guess I fit the definition of an Ashaholic, once I got even the tiniest taste, I needed the whole thing. And this carried over to Mass Effect 2 where for my first two playthroughs I romanced Ashley and stayed faithful, turning down all others in my path. However I did a third playthrough where I romanced Jack just because I too, was feeling compelled to romance Jack for at least one playthrough.
I don't regret romancing Jack (she gets a coveted silver medal) but Ashley still remains my favorite romance in Mass Effect games so far, and odds are, will remain as such.

This +100. I have had to create a femshep to romance Liara because if the option is there I will always go for Ash, she will also live on after Virmire in that playthrough romance or not.

Yep, this is exactly my experience to a "t" - even the bit about Jack and her romance. There's just something about Ashley that makes her romance feel so rewarding to me, so right .... can't imagine ME1 without her.

I've romanced other characters, but Ashley was the only one where it felt like a real, genuine romance between two people. The others felt artificial and just kind of left me cold.
Same here, Jack came off as the best alternative, but even her romance was too rushed and she came off as too co-dependant on Shep.

Never, had been a mother of children, or if a husband had been mouldering in death, would I have taken this task upon me in the city's despite. What law, ye ask, is my warrant for that word? The husband lost, another might have been found, and child from another, to replace the first-born: but, father and mother hidden with Hades, no brother's life could ever bloom for me again.
Edit:@Raanz: I TOTALLY FORGOT TO FREAK OUT OVER YOUR AWESOME PIC IN THIS POST. *FREAKS OUT*

I did save Kaidan once, on my female Shep playthrough. She's a Renegon so having to willingly leave one of her soldiers to die made her extra snappy and angry at everything. I don't think I could've done it with a goody-good Paragon Shep. I came *this* close to abandoning the effort and loading the save, but I had my two other (three, now) Shepards who romanced her to get me through it.

I'm sure this has been posted before, but does your jaw ever just drop at the combination of high quality and hotness Ash is shown with in this original ME "distress call" trailer?
Woah... this is the first time I saw this, never knew ME1 had a trailer with stuff not from the game engine
It looks OK, overall, considering the progress made with CG, so the first time we see Ash she looks a bit... strange.
In the two-shot of her with Gerrus though, she looks pretty amazing
It also appears that Shepard's voice (if it's supposed to be his) is not the same as in the game...
Thanks for sharing Rdubs

For me the choice had little to do with family circumstance - hell, one might even argue that parents losing their only child (in Kaidan) could be even more tragic. At the end of the day, it's what you chose to have happen, for whatever reason. I've always felt that from purely a logical standpoint, Kaidan made more sense to save - I just could never do it. People can and do try to rationalize things (i.e. Kaidan was a biotic and a superior officer vs. Ashley had a family and there might have been inter-species fallout from letting the Salarians die too), but I've always felt the explanations of 'why' to be kind of empty, personally. Hell, if Ash was one of three chefs aboard the Normandy who had no real value to add to the crew/mission, my Shep probably would have found a way to save her (but she's the only one who adds just the right amount of cheese to my pasta!), simply because of who she is and how he feels.
In my "role playing" playthrough with my main Shepard in ME1, she was guarding the nuke. Being my LI aside, I went into RP mode and concluded that the whole mission would be a failure if something happened to the bomb.
Though like alot of you, I just couldn't leave Ash. The one time I did, seeing her watch the Normandy fly away...ugh, my heart was in pieces

I really agree with this. No matter what I tell myself, or imagine my Sheps are thinking, I know deep down that I'm always saving Ashley because I, Batlass8, like her better. Not that I don't like Kaidan...but I can get along without him. Without Ash, the game feels lonely.

I don't know, personally I felt the transition in Jack's feelings for Shepard, there are couple of times when it seems to move forward, then in the next conversation she stops herself.
But I agree that Ash is the only one with whom it felt like a relationship between two people.
